Thanks Brian, I have been taking tons of video lessons (over 50 new episodes) so much more to come! Thanks for checking them out and letting me know you enjoy them. Be well. - Chris
Good One Chris! Loved Sonny's fills also as he was so simple at times, but knew exactly what to play. I liked Buddy but adored Sonny and everything he played with Basie!
Chris Smith You know Chris..... Since you did such a wonderful job on the Mel Lewis book I would love to see you be the first to do one on Sonny! The man truly deserves to have more people know about his contributions to Big Band music as he was not only a fantastic showman, but also an amazing timekeeper and soloist!
Another great lesson, thank you Chris. The Drum hang has become the Jazz Drum Gang ???? I'll be trying the 7 note cross over fill on my Elvin Jones signature snare I just bought later woop
Hi Glyn, yes I bit of rebranding. Moving to a full on website in the coming weeks! Exciting stuff happening. Let me know how the 7 note cross over is going! And boy that Elvin Jones snare. Great drum, miss mine a lot actually. :-(
@@ChrisSmithJazzDrumHang You had one and sold it? Must have been a terrible crack habit to reach that level of desperation!? (English humour my apologies.)
@@Glinggl72Freestyle Ha nice one Glyn. No I didn't have a drug problem, just a gear problem. Too much stuff! Probably should have kept it , it was a nice drum. Just too damn big for me to ever want to take to a gig, so I parted ways. Call me crazy
this album got me into jazz 4 years ago. was mostly into classic rock now hardbop is all i listen to. after learning about bonham, mitch mitchel and ginger baker's influences. btw what drum kit is that? 4:39?
Hi Harchit, thanks for writing and checking out the video! Glad you got the jazz and bebop bug! The drumset is a Noble and Cooley. Just about one year old now.
Finally, after all these years, I've found someone to ask...On the same album on the Bugle Call Rag solo (4:07) there is a mind-bending, wobbly, tom tom sound that I can't recreate. I can't find a transcription of this version of the solo. I don't doubt that the sticking is fairly straightforward, but please give me some help after 54 years of wondering. Thanks.
Thanks Chris. I really appreciate your taking the time to check on this. It sounds like left kick right, right kick left. But the left hand on the snare...? By the way, I appreciate your knowledge and enthusiasm.
I think I found something close. RUclips John Riley soloing in a jazz context...at 3:42 he does something that sounds very close, so I'll go with that. Thanks Chris, I enjoy your channel
James, John Riley showed me the lick years ago. It wasn't from an album it was from a live solo that Buddy played. I keep my eye out for him doing it on RUclips videos, you'll catch it or variations of it.
Accents are as follows: Measure 1 = (1,3,4) Measure 2 = (+ of 1, 3, + of 4) Measure 3 = (2, + of 3) Measure 4 = (1 on snare, 2 on bass drum, then rest for 3 and 4) :-)
I’m so glad you’re back! Was really missing your great lessons! Thanks for another awesome one!

Thanks Chris! You're one of the coolest jazz drum channels out there!...and it's nice that your back 🎼
Thank you so much! Many more videos and a full Jazz Drum Hang website coming very soon!
“Damn you, Buddy!” LOL. That’s a pretty common reaction. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for checking it out Jason!

Terry, I hear you. I didn't put those fills in order rank....but had I #1 would be old Sonny Payne!

Dang, I'm trying to catch where the accents lie in that blazing single stroke barrage...
