@@IAMTHEIC3MAN Thank you for the suggestion. It is a really interesting experience to listen to various versions side by side. Pavarotti's style has just such incredible ease, Mario Lanza - well his version really pulls the heartstrings (even for a beer-bellied balding bloke the other side of 50). However the more I listen to Roberto Alagna- the more the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Probably also due to the incredible quality of this recording, compared to the technology available around 5th May 1949 when Mario started making his RCA recordings. For me there are a number of things that stand out in this recording; Roberto is able to sing well across a wide dynamic range including pianissimo and sotto voce- which is not easy to do and really marks out a great singer. This means that the emotion of music is carried in the crescendo for longer, you have this greater length of build up even though its within the same time period- the ear hears more dynamic change within for the same beats. I would suggest also that this recording reveals a good degree of Coloratura, I must admit an obscure term which I hadn't fully understood before, and not sure I fully understand yet, there is more subtle variation in the way he sings, a subtlety that perhaps earlier recording equipment is unable to convey. For me Roberto Alagna has tried to delve into the aria and reveal more of its subtle complexity, the different layers and nuances, the lights and shadows of the piece. For me this recording is more nuanced, there is more to discover. I admit there is much I have to learn from Mario Lanza, the way you are pulled into the aria, he creates an emotional tidal wave that inevitably, irresistibly draws you in like no other. Lanza's recording of 1958 by Blue Pie Publishing is already better than the RCA recordings of '49.
having a incredible voice color does not mean there will be good singing performance. As you have said you listened this a lot by Pavarotti. So If you are an opera listener, you should have understood the emphasis differences and why this performance is average performance comparing to Pavarotti versions. Due to not being an Italian, most of the opera singers don't know where to put correct emphasises on words. That's why there is a master classes. Yes he has an incredible voice but still an average performance.

Alagna has always been and will always be a wonderful lyric tenor. He should stick to the lyric repertoire and avoid the more dramatic roles which his voice is not suited for. Rodolpho, Pinkerton, Alfredo, are right for him. Radames and Samson are not.
oh, what a beautiful singing... such a personal, and "natural" sound.. I think it could fit in different styles... early music, opera, even pop music and folk music.. simply so emotional!

For me the best version is the one that was performed by young pavarotti, the audio doesn't make justice to his performance. Roberto is really good. But pavarotti with the clear lyrics and power changes the game...
Absolutely Beautiful! His technique was really great. He at some point got off track and did some damage to his voice. His more recent performances have been lackluster. The one thing I really notice is he stuffs the high C in the back of his throat and he doesn't portamenti back down, he simply drops, which is stressful on the voice. BUT REALLY JUST GORGEOUS!
I came back to once again thrill at this amazing interpretation of Puccini's great aria. They say his voice has been shot for years. I don't know that but in this video he was truly splendid. In fact, I have never heard a better version of this difficult aria.
This really is exceptionally beautiful, truly exquisite. While his voice has a different character now, after an already-lengthy career, to say that it is "shot", and that it has been for years, is incorrect. He currently sings major roles, to both enthusiastic audiences and excellent reviews, at top houses (Vienna, Paris, Met, etc.). Thankfully, there are plenty of videos on YT of his work in the past year or two, so you can look for yourself and needn't take "their" word (or mine) for it.
+ikey14 So good to hear from you ikey. I'm pleased to know that Roberto is still singing well and is quite active. I'll look for some current video. Hey, BTW, I studied voice for 3 years in Chicago not to become an opera singer but just to refine my technique. I sing and play piano in clubs for 40 years now. The voice studies have prolonged my career. I have a video on YT. Look it up and I'll accept your honest opinion, Enter: Joel Barry sings Nessun Dorma. Remember, I'm not passing myself off as another Alagna. In the clip I'm holding a mic. It was 1998 at my uncle's 70th b-day. Ciao!
@Joel, I listened to your video & left a comment for you there. Thanks. It occurs to me that if you see this posting in time you may be able to see & hear Alagna in 2 Puccini works being presented by the the Metropolitan Opera, as he's in both, and both are matinee performances to be transmitted to theaters worldwide as part of the Met's "Live in HD" series. He's to be in Manon Lescaut this weekend (Sat., March 5) and in Madama Butterfly next month (Sat., April 2). There is also usually a Wednesday night repeat /encore presentation, in case Saturday is sold out or you can't make Sat. Check the Met's web site for more details and for links (to locate theaters and make online ticket purchases)- metopera.org
+ikey14 Thanks for the notice. I'll be sure to record both. He's a wonderful tenor but has been treated roughly at La Scala. Pavarotti liked him a lot. That's saying something.
the first time i saw & heard Alagna was on a national news broadcast - and clips of this recording were included - i couldn't believe my ears! - it is still one of the best vocal performances i've ever heard - too bad he has declined a bit since then - but i can just play this clip over and over can't i

Talk about the meeting of a man, in time, with a splendid piece of music that became so much more than the number of its parts. Thank God it was recorded on video.
Of all the renditions I have heard of this moving peace of opera, it remains the one that when I listen to it, stirs my memories of my Neapolitan mother, who loved this version of Roberto Alagna.
This is also my favorite along with Mario del Monaco. I took singing lessons from a Neapolitan tenor about 20 years ago, i still remember how easy it was for the old man to hit a C5. His favorite Neapolitan canzone was O Marenariello, but he taught me Santa Lucia, Comme facette mammeta, among others xD
Perhaps one of the best interpretation ever. His voice is pure, I dare to say more pure that Mr Pavarotti. His legatos are breach taking, Pavarotti does not have that legato. Amazing!
I live in NYC, and for many years Alagna sang every role imaginable at the Met. Early on in his career, I had the good fortune see him as Nemorino and Faust. He was spectacular, especially as Nemorino. When he sang “Una Furtiva Lagrima” you could hear a pin drop. The entire audience sat there totally mesmerized. No rustling of programs, or coughing, or unwrapping of lozenges, or any of the other shenanigans which are a usually a part of Met performances. I then saw him as Don Carlo, Pinkerton, Cavaradossi, and Radames. He wasn’t bad, necessarily, but the qualities that made his singing special were no longer in evidence. His voice always sounded stressed and worn, and there wasn’t much beauty left. Side note - in 1999 I saw a performance of Turandot in which Gheorghiu sang a sensational Liu. I was seated in a box very close to the stage (one of the partial view boxes, which were pretty inexpensive). Alagna was seated two boxes away from me, and his adoration for his wife was obvious. He was clearly thrilled for her, and during her curtain calls he yelled “Brava” along with the rest of the audience.
He has visibly recovered from his health issues ! Wrote on youtube "Alagna pagliacci", there's a recent performance which is possibly one of the best Canios that we have seen !
Bravo Alagna. Bravo. You did nail it. This is my favorite aria and I still give the nod to Pav. In his prime, he was otherworldly. But absolutely beautifully done here.
This clip I have seen many times. I am without words. Alagna is above Carreras - and Domingo when it comes to singing. Pavarotti had this smothness an caracter., and Jussi Bjørling the sharpness. I would say that Alagna is among the top three singers ever. Far above Kauffman
Frode Olsen do you compere this tenor to Jussi Björling? As an Norwegian please don't! Taste is one thing, greatness of voice- quality is something quite different!
nothing beats Roberto Alagna's rendition of Che Gelida Manina. I've listened to many renditions and somehow his voice stands out among many others. There's a certain energy inside his vocals and there's a form of magnet in his voice. Bravo!!
kauffman have a terrible techniche in the middle register but in the high notes sounds very good, kauffman today he cant sing, her vocal cords are suffering,His vocal cords are bleeding
At the end, he pauses the director, extends the duration, he smiles and he knows he has recorded one of his best performances. I don't know why Alagna did not become more famous. What I noticed is that he was not consistent, sometimes his singing was not that great, even faulty at times.

What always struck me about this studio recording is how Alagna holds up his hand while holding the high c and the conductor waiting for him…never have seen a singer doing that.
I'm guessing we would never see it, because on stage he and the conductor may have worked it out ahead of time, but he would follow the conductor in a live performance. This being a recording he has that luxury. Love that moment.
@@TimothyJonSarris I’m sure you’re right. I’m no expert. But what about, say, concert duets? I’m thinking of the Pearl Fishers duet by Alagna & Terfel (Met Gala)? They were not quite together in the last few bars. That kind of surprised me, bc they can’t look at each other so I would have thought they’d keep an eye on Levine. That’s not a thing?
@@epona9166 you’re absolutely right. In addition to the conductor following the singers, they certainly have to check in with the maestro, especially at important moments like finishing together. I remember the evening of the Pearl fishers performance and I I also remember that the tenor had already performed a matinee of Bohème earlier that day. As for baritone’s excuse for not paying attention…who knows what was going through his mind. One is for sure, I’ve stood singing on that stage and it can be daunting, especially if your making your debut!

Brilhante!
3:48 Let me sing my high C please XD ! Immenso Roberto ! The young Roberto is amazing !
Alagna has always been and will always be a wonderful lyric tenor. He should stick to the lyric repertoire and avoid the more dramatic roles which his voice is not suited for. Rodolpho, Pinkerton, Alfredo, are right for him. Radames and Samson are not.
And now he has delivered a flawless, sublime Samson in magnificent voice. Vienna, May 2018.
And he is about to debut his very-well-received Samson in NYC - to open the Met season next month - with Garança, his Vienna Dalila, opposite him.
It’s too late to go back to the lyric rep. He made his choices, and presumably he thought about it.
oh, what a beautiful singing... such a personal, and "natural" sound.. I think it could fit in different styles... early music, opera, even pop music and folk music.. simply so emotional!
Vous ne croyez pas si bien dire !

this is the best version ever in my opinion - he had such a splendid lyric voice, don't understand why he's always tried to sing more dramatic
Agreed.
There seems to be this idea that dramatic repertoire is more marketable, but I don't know if it's true for tenors as well as sopranos.
For me the best version is the one that was performed by young pavarotti, the audio doesn't make justice to his performance.
Roberto is really good. But pavarotti with the clear lyrics and power changes the game...
This voice sounds weak to me
My God this performance actually make me cry. Eventhough I don't understand the language. God Bless.
No me canso de escucharlo. Perfecta interpretación. Media voz, vibrato, voz de pecho. Genial.
Alagna : Che gelida...
Me : oh my god this is perfect
YES
Hmm. Think I've listened to this about a hundred times.
me times five... :-) so healing...

STUPENDO!!! Elegante, raffinato nel canto e nell'interpretazione. Sempre un'emozione riascoltarlo.
3:48--"I got this...I'll let you know when I need you to conduct some more."
Exactly, Insert Cleber Name! Very good observation, I ser the same comunication with the maestro.
Very good critique. I agree
I've never rated him,but he sounds impressivehere. His voice is worn now.
Love, love, love....I could listen him and watch this video again and again., feeling sad and glad at the same time. He is simply gorgeous.
Moi aussi! I saw him live at the Met and went backstage to meet him! He kissed my hand ! and I kissed him on both cheeks!Heaven!
the first time i saw & heard Alagna was on a national news broadcast - and clips of this recording were included - i couldn't believe my ears! - it is still one of the best vocal performances i've ever heard - too bad he has declined a bit since then - but i can just play this clip over and over can't i
Obviously singers after a career uplift they sing too much and ruin their voice. I think Alagna is unbearable today
Enjoy, the master sings!

Such a beautiful rendition, powerful yet tender. My favorite!

Talk about the meeting of a man, in time, with a splendid piece of music that became so much more than the number of its parts. Thank God it was recorded on video.
I like the way he conducts the conductor on his high note and then sings pianissimo beautifully.
This is the best performance of Che Gelida Manina. Period!
It's not.

What a spectacular voice, what a talent 😍😍
goes in al your bloodvessels. Magnificant.
Clean as a mountain spring, Voice
Love Roberto. Always felt he's underrated. Rivals di Stefano more than the 3 tenors.
✅✅❤️
I forgot how beautiful his voice was.
Watch Sungho Kim from 2023 CSOTW performance
Imagine waking up and doing your warm up and realising your voice is on a beautiful day like this ! Sublime 🙏
Jesus christ.. i'm crying..
Boram Cho Listen Pavarotti.....
Blown away. Beautiful !
Such a beautiful song, sung by a great tenor.
Perhaps one of the best interpretation ever. His voice is pure, I dare to say more pure that Mr Pavarotti. His legatos are breach taking, Pavarotti does not have that legato. Amazing!
Completely agree. What a complex voice! ❣️
I wonder why he is not included in the list of great tenors we have had the pleasure of listening to throughout the years! Bravo Roberto; stunning!👏
He ruined his voice in years to come by singing dramatic tenor roles.
Davvero bello!!!!
Beautiful interpretation, one of the best of this aria.
surpassingly beautiful tone, expression, control
Bravo Alagna. Bravo. You did nail it.
This is my favorite aria and I still give the nod to Pav. In his prime, he was otherworldly. But absolutely beautifully done here.
This clip I have seen many times. I am without words. Alagna is above Carreras - and Domingo when it comes to singing. Pavarotti had this smothness an caracter., and Jussi Bjørling the sharpness. I would say that Alagna is among the top three singers ever. Far above Kauffman
yes but not above di stefano
There is an even better, rare version from Alagna
Frode Olsen do you compere this tenor to Jussi Björling? As an Norwegian please don't! Taste is one thing, greatness of voice- quality is something quite different!
Mamma miaaaaaa!!!
nothing beats Roberto Alagna's rendition of Che Gelida Manina. I've listened to many renditions and somehow his voice stands out among many others. There's a certain energy inside his vocals and there's a form of magnet in his voice. Bravo!!
yeah, but the high c is not the best
???????????????? In what way?
I mean... something like more perceptible, like kaufmann high c, pavarotti high c but alagna its natural
kauffman have a terrible techniche in the middle register but in the high notes sounds very good, kauffman today he cant sing, her vocal cords are suffering,His vocal cords are bleeding
At the end, he pauses the director, extends the duration, he smiles and he knows he has recorded one of his best performances. I don't know why Alagna did not become more famous. What I noticed is that he was not consistent, sometimes his singing was not that great, even faulty at times.
Absolutely beautiful!!
one of the best natural voices we've ever heard. Better than Domingo, Carreras and others in this role.
I agree

What always struck me about this studio recording is how Alagna holds up his hand while holding the high c and the conductor waiting for him…never have seen a singer doing that.
I'm guessing we would never see it, because on stage he and the conductor may have worked it out ahead of time, but he would follow the conductor in a live performance. This being a recording he has that luxury. Love that moment.
@@epona9166 I find a good conductor usually follows the singer.
