He’s not wrong... second gen EZ30’s have AVCS and AVLS - AVCS is just vvt and AVLS is identical to vtec in that it offers a secondary altered cam profile. Combine the two and you have the best of both worlds.
So subarus vvl is similar to Hondas. Basically, one big cam lobe controls one valve at all times, another smaller lobe controls the second valve. At low rpm the valves create a swirl effect because of the unequal lift. At high rpm the large lobe opens both valves, creating equal lift and more flow. It's not identical to Hondas, bit it is very similar.

I’d reckon his sneaky little gear ratio change has something to do with how well it goes ☺️ best way to liven up an NA or underpowered car. I had a '92 scooby SVX with the 3.3 NA flat six 4x4 auto, the car was a quirky beast, huge coupe with unusable rear seats and only half the front windows came down ,engine sounded nice and had a speed limiter at 144 mph
Subaru "vtec" is called AVLS. On this engine it's only on one intake valve per cylinder to "promote swirl" as they say in the marketing material. The previous design on the ez30 had it on the exhaust as well but that was dropped for this model in favor of some cam timing magic. You can tell the difference between the 2 by the intake manifold. The older one isnt plastic. I plan to do this swap on my SF Forester and leave it NA. So much better than the 2.0L STI swaps everybody does imho. Cool vid!
