    Vande Sangeetam!
To music, I take a bow. It gives us so much, from rejuvenating our spirits and cleansing our mind, to a sense of physical well being and a definite spiritual direction if we choose. Sometime during our life, we need to prostrate before this power. We attempt here to share all that it has given us- Composers, ragas, thoughts on puranas. We also try to look at what we should do, individually and collectively, to ensure that its purity and profound beauty are passed on to the generation next.
Recorded in natural setting in a village Mundaje, Karnataka.

Vijay Siva's rendition of Sri Krishnam Bhajamanasa as the main piece at Music Academy over 20 years ago still rings in my ear. Matches the great SSI rendition.

    Namaste sir!
The most difficult things fascinate us most. Conquering ThOdi and mastering it on a woodwind instrument must be giving immense satisfaction to the musicians. Small wonder they take great pains to gain perfect control over the instrument and the raga. I remember having read that 'thOdi Venkataramana bhagavathar' could sing the raga for many days at a stretch. Such was his mastery over the rAga.
It is said the commencing phrase of any kriti brings out the rAgabhAvam at its best. So when there are so many krithis in the same rAgA, repetition of the opening phrase or the resemblance between the opening phrases of two songs become inevitable. But the lines that follow must be and will be different! Otherwise the songs themselves would become identical.

I vividly remember Vijay Siva Sir's rendition at Yavanika hall, Bangalore as a 9 year old where Vijay Sir rendered Thodi swarajathi and next class with my guru I learnt it. The moment I asked my guru to teach it, she said " Did Vijay Siva render it😀". That was the impact of Vijay Siva Sir's rendition on me. Truly unforgettable. My humble namaskarams to Sir🙏

And another special and astounding feature of each kirthanam of Thyagaraja in Thodi. He has started each kirthanam with the arohanam and avarohanam of Thodi Ragam. I would like to mention it. Then the evergreen Muthuswami Deekshitar Kirthanam Sri Krishnam Bhaja Manasa in Guruvayur Krishnan.

Excellent content and encyclopaedic tour. I was a little confused though why the vidwan has emphasised multiple times that there are no shringara compositions in todi. There are multiple varnams (tana like inta cauka, pada like rupamu juci or kanakangi ni celimi), as well as classic padams like pusa daramu, all in todi. Did I misunderstand something?

To me it seems Todi alapanas and swara sancharas are more manoranjaka than kritis (with of course a fair number of exceptions). I wonder if this is because many of the kritis make too much use of the sa and pa while the alapanas and swaras revel in avoiding them?
