    There are plans to build a new station to serve Deeside Industrial Park in Flintshire, which could be called Deeside Parkway, but the Government has so far refused to fund the new station. So what is to become of this planned new station which could benefit thousands of workers?

    Looks like an excellent candidate for a station - hopefully they will also provide cycle lanes etc to the industrial areas if this goes ahead. Integrating public transport is vital.

    • @Rail_Focus

      It does have good cycle connections, even a cycle route from the Wirral, but it's quite isolated, so not something you'd want to cycle along at night. Let's hope they eventually build the station.

    Seems like a very high price tag for what the station could provide. That concept design looks fantastically overbuilt for serving an industrial park as well. I suspect getting the line running more reliably would rightly be a higher priority.

    It’s not surprising that the Deeside parkway station never adds up - as you pointed out, Hawarden Bridge is effectively on the park and more importantly Shotton isn’t much further away.
    A location in the middle of the park might have made some sense but the planned spot on the edge will only really benefit Wirral travellers from the limited Neston/Heswall stops.
    Because a change at Shotton would be needed it couldn’t compete with driving for anyone on the North Wales line or in Chester.
    Every individual business on the park has good parking and the planned park-and-ride on the Chester edge of the park had to be mothballed because of lack of use.
    It’s also a long walk around the park because it’s (understandably) spread out.
    All in all a station will never add up and will be vanity if done. Better options, like a park-wide e-scooter or bike scheme linked to Shotton station are probably going to be much more effective for rail numbers.

    • @Rail_Focus
      @Rail_Focus  4 месяца назад +1

      I didn't say HB was on the park, I demonstrated it's quite remote, difficult to get to and not practical to connect with shuttle buses.

    • @bevanpaul1
      @bevanpaul1 4 месяца назад +2

      @@Rail_Focus It's not really remote, especially as the park is/can only grow to the south given the road/marshland/etc North. My point was really that the business case just won't stack up. Improvements at Shotton will probably have the biggest impact on rail travel to the park.

    I've wondered if Merseyrail could electrify the line and provide a metro-type service into Liverpool, which would make closer-spaced stations more feasible.
    If the Central - Wapping Tunnel link were opened for use, Merseyrail could run a cross-region service from Wrecsam via Liverpool city centre and Edge Hill out into Lancashire.

    • @Rail_Focus
      @Rail_Focus  4 месяца назад

      It seems the only way to provide through services to Liverpool will be to use the battery variants of the Class 777, which is currently being considered for the line.

    Another great video. I'm a traditionalist so Parkway isn't a bad name in my opinion per se but but it does effectively say 'Nowhere near the place with the same name as the station!" In which case, why not just suffix "Road" as the GWR loved to do, that way it's not so obvious.

    The lack of ticketing intergration between the Bidston Line and Merseyrail is infuriating especially as the Bidston line serves many small stations.
    Hypothetically if I wanted to catch a train from Heswall to Liverpool Central I have 4 options.
    Option 1:
    Buy a digital ticket from Bidston to Liverpool Central on my phone (through Trainline etc) but Merseyrail don' t accept digital tickets - so not an option.
    Option 2:
    Buy a paper ticket at Heswall station. There is no ticket machine at this station - so not an option
    Option 3:
    Buy a digital ticket from Heswall to Bidston and then a separate paper ticket using the ticket office at Bidston (all Merseyrail stations have at least a ticket office or a machine). But this is significantly more expensive instead of buying a through ticket - not an option.
    Option 4:
    Order a ticket in advance and get it posted to me. That is ridiculous, I shouldn't need to plan several days in advance to get what is a local train.
    Option 5:
    Board the train without a valid ticket and hope the guard knows the rules and you purchase a ticket on the train. Hopefully the guard wouldn't become suspicious when you show a digital railcard on an app like trainline and ask why you didn't purchase a ticket through the app and think that you were trying to fare dodge. You shouldn't get fined but if the guard is really grumpy and unaware that Merseyrail don't accept digital tickets he could (unlawfully) fine you. - Not ideal.
    Anyone know what they would do in this situation? Option 5 seems the best one, but it doesn't exactly make for stress free train travel.
    Very long story short. MERSEYRAIL NEED TO START ACCEPTING DIGITAL TICKETS!!!

    • @Rail_Focus
      @Rail_Focus  4 месяца назад

      TfW should fulfill its promise to install TVMs on Borderlands Line stations. Shouldn't have to rely on a guard selling a ticket (some don't bother), I've had close calls at Bidston when I've only just made my connection because I had to buy a ticket at Bidston.
      I had to battle with TfW on social media to get them to clarify that if passengers who are unable to buy a ticket at the station can buy a ticket onboard the train. On Monday the TfW app refused to sell me an open return, but thankfully I managed to get a ticket just before I got off the train.
      I think to answer your question, if travelling to Liverpool you should buy onboard the train, or at Bidston, so long as it doesn't mean missing your connection.
      In 2024 it shouldn't be this difficult or worrisome to buy a ticket.

  • @JT-nr2ss
    @JT-nr2ss 4 месяца назад +3

    Is there actually a reason why 200 car parking spaces would be needed at the station?
    Thats a massive amount of space... seems such a waste for land around a station that is supposed to serve places workers currently drive to...
    And it would create more care journeys...
    And it would contribute to flooding from runoff...

    • @Rail_Focus
      @Rail_Focus  4 месяца назад +1

      I believe there was data which showed a not insignificant amount of people currently drive from North East Wales to Hooton to catch Merseyrail services to Liverpool, adding to congestion on the A550. Driving a shorter distance to Deeside would be better and technically wouldn't be generating new journeys or congestion.

    • @bevanpaul1
      @bevanpaul1 4 месяца назад

      There’s a big difference between driving to Hooton for a regular 15 minute 8 car service and parkway for a trundle through the Wirral to change at Bidston.

      It's something I find generally very annoying. Where I live they won't act to integrate the train station into local footpaths or cycle routes or have anything like a useful bus connection, every time it comes up it gets dumped in favour of making the car park even bigger.

    That’s what the plan is in Wales and for the Welsh government to build new railway stations and to reinstate railway lines that were closed in the Beeching Era. And to make the railways in Wales more greener with more upgrades and electrification.

    • @Rail_Focus
      @Rail_Focus  4 месяца назад

      The Welsh Government doesn't seem to have much of a plan at the moment. They're fully committed to the Valleys upgrade and seems that they're not bothered about North Wales.

    • @Redwitheran
      @Redwitheran 4 месяца назад

      @@Rail_Focus Rail infrastructure is not devolved to Wales. New stations in Wales have to apply for UK gov funding as said, so the Welsh gov is powerless. The valley lines were devolved so the Welsh government can actually do something there while the rest of Wales have to wait for Westminster to bother. So makes sense the Welsh gov isn’t doing much in North Wales as they’re not really allowed to. It’s up to Westminster.

    • @Rail_Focus
      @Rail_Focus  4 месяца назад

      The leveling up funding was a Westminster initiative, so it's implied I meant central Government, but I'm sure the Welsh Government could fund the station if it wanted to. Either way no Government is currently willing to fund the station

    • @Redwitheran
      @Redwitheran 3 месяца назад

      @@Rail_Focus Because it’s not devolved, the Welsh government do not get extra funding for it. If England spends so on so on Healthcare, the Welsh Government gets a proportional allocation of funding for healthcare, for railways it gets 0% because it isn’t devolved while the Scottish government does. So it will have to take it out of the health budget if it wants to fund something that the UK government is responsible for. The Welsh government is only given funds for the things it’s responsible for, it can’t set its own taxes.
      Obviously the simple answer is to devolve railways to Wales, hopefully so Welsh people don’t pay for HS2, which they currently are.
