Nothing is more engaging than an educated enthusiast! Bravo, Matthias Wivel! He is not only a very good speaker, but he gives what appears an extempore performance, that is in reality a finely balanced mix of fact, analysis, context and opinion, which I very much appreciated. And especially, his comments are accompanied by lots of good detailed images of the painting; other talks in this series suffer from a failure to actually show the painting in question in close up. Thank you!

Mr. Wivel gives a wonderful introduction to this canvas. I have always tended to look down on Raphael as the creator of sugary visual confections, but the speaker really brought me around to looking at the Master in a new way: as the deliverer of a humanistic AND Christian message: "the better angels of our being." Thank you so much, Mr Wivel, you have changed my viewpoint on Raphael lastingly!

I value Matthias Wivel and his eloquent lectures. He is also one of the curatorial minds behind the current Raphael exhibition at the National Gallery. Be aware that this event may cause fainting or other physical symptoms due to the sheer wonder and genius that is Raphael.

Love the passion Mr. Wivel gave to this lecture. I wish l could transport myself into the moment when Raphael through, sketched and painted this or all his paintings.
If he saw something in another’s works and developed it or used it in his own original work it isn’t stealing. It is all part of the great conversation of art, just as it is in the great conversation of science or philosophy. It is only stealing when one appropriates another’s work wholesale, and without attribution.

I love lectures, and lecturers, like this. It poses a simple question and meanders the hell out of it in the answer that proceeds, so in the end you may not hear the simple answer you were looking for, but you are left with enough information to give the answer on your own. Inspiring and informative, thank you! I enjoyed the lecture about Rembrandt's self portrait as well, and I will surely follow other talks too.

I do wish I had seen something like this before I went to to the Ashmolean's exhibition of Raphael's drawings. Everything I saw there was amazing, but I feel I would have been even more amazed [and better informed] if I had seen a lecture like this first. Still, it was one of the best days of my life...I got to see not only all those beautiful Raphael drawings but so many other wonderful things in the museum. My sister and I were there for the whole day.

watching this video and questioning how come I lived most of my life like 200km away from the Vatican and I've never been to the museums to watch the frescos. sad face emoji.
Please don't waste the opportunity. So much art and architecture I will never see in person, I am jealous of those who live nearby. I fell in love with Hagia Sophia when I saw a black and white photo thirty years ago. I have always longed to visit, but it will never come to pass. It is a very beautiful harmony in madonnas and jezus child composition.From mine point of you l liked mainly Leonardos compositions but apriciate with some musik background is enjoyble inspiration for adoration virgin and the child.thanks...

A famous jewel, a pearl, La Peregrine “ was stolen from the Spanish Royal Palace, a jewel that belong to Isabel of Castilla. Stolen by Napoleon when he enter Madrid appear on a British collection and was sold in an auction to Robert Burton and give that to Elizabeth Taylor, and was recovered by the Spanish crown on Elizabeth Taylor auction when she died.

Does anyone else see the suggestion of the cross formed by the darker wall sections behind the three figures? Not sure if that would have been intentional as foreshadowing or just me…
I had always interpreted this as Jesus giving the flower to St John.
Could this Madonna & Child have Raphael depicting in the background that the windows and wall actually suggest the cross? Sort of a prefiguring and reflection that theology of the cross...
Brilliant. Could the handing of the carnation be the other way round, Jesus giving it to John?
My personal opinion: all museum walls should be medium grey (what photographers call 18% grey). This is neutral both in colour and in light, and doesn't interfere with the appreciation of the painting. A red wall introduces a "background noise" in the perception of the viewer.
This be very well maybe the reason why I think the lady is Elizabeth and not Mary?

Raphael: “what the hell is this guy saying? Somebody offered me money to paint a picture of Mary, John, & Jesus. So I did. Nothing more, nothing less.”
Wise beyond years these three are. The halos representing a fully awakened consciousness. Chakras are open and aligned igniting the crown chakra indicating cosmic expansion or "Christ Consciousness" = "Oneness" = "Unity Consciousness".
Matthias gets more compliments than Raphael himself. Ok anyway.. 😊
b. An instance of being in love:
Forgiveness of mankind is a doctrine not a fact at 525
But it would have been what Raphael would have taken as a fact.
I believe that the painting was small because Raphael used Indigo blue for his Virgins.
Raphael's most stunning and original work also belongs to the National Gallery - his portrait of Pope Julius II. It makes all of his religious-themed paintings appear insipid and dated, and reminds us all that the Roman Catholic Church, then and now, is a political organization, not a religious one.
Calm serene beautiful painting presented by a nervous over zealous curator. And this is a problem when it comes to presenting art, how to explain and it's relevance without overshadowing the painting itself.

2:04 NOPE: it's not secret that during the Napoleon invasion of italy most of the pieces of art were first stolen by the french troups and then SOLD. Unfortunately
many others were simply destroied, or lost along their way to france.
