    My favourite bit about the casting of Toby Stephens as Poseidon is that it makes him a second generation sea deity from Greek mythology. His mum Maggie Smith played the sea nymph Thetis in the original Clash of the Titans back in 1981.

    Hades was actually making a joke with the pomegranate juice offer, because the pomegranates of the underworld are cursed. Just one taste of a single seed, you're trapped in the underworld forever. You can never return to the mortal world. That's one reason Persephone became his wife.
    Even in the books, Percy describes them as plump and blood red, with such an irresistible scent that Percy himself was tempted to go over and pluck one for himself.
    So basically Hades was jokingly offering to trap them forever

    The fact you managed to clock that Hades' Palace is an inverted Mt. Olympus, before we've even seen Olympus, is so impressive! That was a thing Percy realised in the book, how sad it seemed that Hades had tried to build his own imitation of that place upstairs.

    The Elysian Fields/Elysian Plains/Elysium are the "heaven" of Greek mythology. Descriptions of it vary. It is supposed to be a place of perfect happiness and in some stories, people could only enter by the invitation of the gods and were made immortal. Some stories have it as a giant wheat field. Also, I don't know if you remember the myth of Procrustes. He was the one who would invite people to lie on a bed and then either cut off their legs or attempt to stretch them until the exactly fit the bed. That's why he kept talking about people that "just fit". Of course, anyone who received that treatment didn't survive. That's why Percy referred to him as the murderer of travelers. Oh, and in the book, Percy actually cut off his head.

    • @larseich5796
      @larseich5796 6 месяцев назад +4

      Yeah. In Greek mythology the underworld operates on a good place, bad place, medium place model. 90% of people come to the medium place when they die. That's where they lost Anabeth. Asphodel is just a big desert plane of nothingness where souls have to spend eternity with nothing but the existential dread that comes with the realisation that you have archived nothing with your life worthy of praise or punishment. Not quite sure where the vines binding you are coming from. If someone could point me to the source for that element I'd be very happy.
      Tataros is hell. It's where those who deserve special punishment go. Sisiphos rolling that rock, Tantalus being always hungry but never getting to eat and Chronos being sliced into a million little pieces.
      Elysium is the good place where only the most heroic, those with the most glory go. If you go there you might even get a chance to reincarnate as a new being on earth.

    The interaction between young Percy and Sally just completely broke my heart, especially when she broke down at the register. As a mother and step-mother, I have been there, done that, got a whole dresser full of t-shirts! But she did good.

  • @aricaj.3006
    @aricaj.3006 6 месяцев назад +6

    If you listen closely at the end of Sally and Poseidon's scene, you can hear a clap of thunder when Poseidon looks at Percy. A lot of people have theorized that Poseidon wanted to talk to his son but was heeding Zeus' warning not to interact (if he did there could have potentially been disastrous consequences for both Percy and Sally). Anyway that scene imo was the best in the entire show so far, Toby Stephens and Virginia Kull did such an amazing job with the emotion and their performance actually got tears out of me.

(and the show that the showrunners and half the writers worked on previously) One of the first things his character did in that shows first season was compare his goal to the odyssey so you could say he was primed for a greek mythological role.

    Two quick cast notes.
    (1) "Crusty" (as you call him) was played by JULIAN RICHINGS, who has been around for ages but is probably most famous for his perfect personification of Death on SUPERNATURAL. A shame he didn't get more to do here.
    (2) Poseidon is played by TOBY STEPHENS, who you likely know as the Bond-villain Gustav Graves from DIE ANOTHER DAY. He's probably more famous, though, for who his mother is: the magnificent, the legendary *DAME MAGGIE SMITH.* Yup, Professor Minerva McGonagall herself, the Countess Dowager, Miss Jean Brodie, double-Oscar-winner, stage-and-screen titan, and, fittingly, also Thetis in the original THE CLASH OF THE TITANS from 1981 (in which she demanded that Poseidon "release the Kraken!").

    Relating to your question about there being a “pleasant” part in the underworld in greek mythology: Yes! It’s called Elysium or the Blessed Isles. It’s basically heaven but you can only go there if you are a mortal related to a god or were a legendary hero in life. Everyone just has to wait in line first to cross the River Styx. I think they get sorted from that point lmao

    The Underworld in greek mythology (or at least the PJO series) has a bunch of different areas for different souls. The Fields of Punishment are like more traditional hell, where wicked souls are tormented for eternity. There is Elysium which is more like heaven, where good souls are rewarded. There are also the Isles of the Blest, which is basically 'super heaven', where souls that earn Elysium can choose to reincarnate into a new mortal life and if they earn Elysium again they get to go to the Isles (Its like new game+ for mortal life). Then there is Asphodel, which is like limbo. Souls not bad enough for punishment and not good enough for reward go here to wander and waste away for eternity. Not a great fate

    Hades, the Underworld, is generally divided into three sections: Elysium, paradise for the good and heroes; the Fields of Asphodel, a place where forgotten and regrettable souls wander aimlessly for eternity; and Tartarus, where the most despicable and wretched go to suffer personalized hells (for instance Tantalus, who killed and fed the gods his own children, is cursed to starve for all eternity with an apple always just in reach)

    The Underworld is a massive realm, with a lot of different areas. Here, you see Asphodel, for people who never did anything that they held in value, imagine a forest of Karens. Elysium, the Good Place, is where people who lived well went. People who try for rebirth can do so through Elysium. For those heroes who achieve Elysium 3 times, there are the Isles of Blest, the ultimate vacation resort. For the bad people, there are the Fields of Punishment. Guests of the Fields are not allowed rebirth, and are punished for all time. Then there's Tartarus, where the monsters go when they die. Tartarus is also where the fallen Titans have gone.

  • @nicolaashamman6201
    @nicolaashamman6201 6 месяцев назад +2

    I do like the approach to the Fields of Asphodel in the show. It seems at first like the spirits just turn into trees, but if it can happen to Annabeth, then clearly it's the place itself that does that. Gives something significant to the place that's different Elysium, where you can enjoy a proud death for having led a fulfilling life, and the Fields of Punishment, where you'd go if you have no regret for your wrongdoings. At least from the bits we've seen, the trajectory of your afterlife seems like it's tied to how you feel about your life in hindsight.
    It's also just a more interesting thing to think about than the book's version od Asphodel, which was just a massive boring wheat field for people who didn't do enough good or enough bad, they just kinda... lived a life. The Judges sort them into the good place, the bad place and the boring place. There isn't really anything in the books to imply that those 3 locations themselves are unique, they just happen to be where the 3 kinds of people end up.
    Also somehow both the book and show managed to mention Kansas in this section. Grover compared Asphodel to "standing in a wheat field in Kansas forever", which sounded pretty bad to Percy.

    Elysium is like paradise and if your a demigod and try for elysium 3 times you basically are in mega paradise

    The underworld was designed to be upside down to mirror Olympus bc they banned hades from his seat on Olympus.

    In the Percy Jackson books there’s two places of the underworld meant as a reward for the best heroes, Elysium, which is where heroes went after they died. If they chose to be born again and lived heroic lives three times and achieved Elysium three times they were given the reward of being sent to the Isles of the Blest.

    Elysium and the Isle of the blessed are where heroes go after death, they are the good afterlife.
    Tartarus and the fields of punishment are for those that did horrible stuff in life.
    The meadows of Asphodel are where every one else goes, those who weren't heroic enough for elysium nor horrible enough for tartarus.

    The books are definitely more violent. This series waters it down. It's supposed to be more kid friendly but the books WERE aimed at kids so I'm not sure it was a valid choice.

    • @Al_-cf1dj
      @Al_-cf1dj 6 месяцев назад +6

      I mean it's one thing to read about violence and another to actually witness it. I read Warrior Cats but I still never had the stomach for some of the canonical gore being depicted in fanart, let alone in the real world

      Because in a kids book you're allowed to describe gore splattering but you can't show it:Hunger Games,Narnia,Eragon...

    Hades was a bit of a disappointment. In the book, he was the first god Percy saw as a legitimate GOD. Not a hungover deadbeat like Dionysus, or a buff asshole like Ares. Hermes didn't make an appearance until book 2. Hades was massive, towering over Percy and the others even while sitting on his throne and his clothes shimmered with faces as if they were woven from tortured souls. When he was angered, the throne room and the entire underworld shook with such intensity that L.A was devastated with a massive earthquake. Not sure why the show decided to do this approach, maybe they didn't want to make Hades look like a bad guy or if it was outside their special effects budget. Still, lost opportunity for one of the three big gods.

    Underworld OK... A kind of changing in Asphodel Fields from the book. Out the grey desert without wind with petrified trees and billions of people wandering quietly. And enter the people with "roots of regrets". Tartarus entrance was super cool.... And just two thing down: the not viewing from Elysium, and Hades and his palace without his soldiery, without Persefone garden and his dragon, and without a proper Hades. That one in the movie was goofy but was wa better than this talk show interviewer. Other difference... Too soon for Khronos presentation. In Book Hades never asked for the master bolt. He want his elm.
