  • I desperately needed a new desk, so i bought some reclaimed scaffold boards and went about building it.
    All the parts i used were
    3 Scaffold Boards
    2 Ikea Legs which we have had for years.
    Glue
    Briwax Mahogony
    To make it i used a circular saw, orbital sander and a couple of different planers, to get my flat edges and flatten the top.

      Thanks for watching! I've been trying a few different ways of doing videos with more tool noise, less music etc. Does the format of this one work for you?

      @@ProjectGarethNorman This format works fine for me, but I guess it's personal preference really. What is most important to me is the explanation of the process, like putting it together with dowels and type of wax used etc. You've done this spot on for me so I've no complaints. I just appreciate when someone takes time and effort to pass on knowledge like you have. Sometimes creators don't get the thanks and appreciation for their efforts, so thanks for that. The format or music is not a specialty of mine so I wouldn't be much of a help to you with that. It's just that I have 4 planks cut in half and 6 cut in thirds and I was looking for ideas. I was thinking of making a table and some bookcases. I saw one online, a farmhouse style table and benches made with planks and angle iron. It was selling £600 for the table and £180 for each of the benches. To me that's crazy so what I'm going to do is put the tabletop together like you and wax it the same. I don't have a welder but after seeing the price of the farmhouse style table I can justify buying a new small one if I can build the table and bookcases using it. At least then it's paid for itself and I'll own it. I'm firmly of the belief that if a tool can pay for itself, then it's worth buying.
      Anyway mate I'm rambling on a bit but again I'll just say thanks for the help and good luck with any further videos whichever format you choose. As with most things in life it's just trial and error.

    i've not got a planer, reckon using a circular saw to give them a straight-ish edge would work instead or should i pick up a hand plane to get a better finish

    • @ProjectGarethNorman
      @ProjectGarethNorman  3 года назад +2

      It should work fine. The way i see it, use what you have to do what you need, and when you want to go to the next level, buy the next bit of hardware.

      Sounds like a great plan. I would however seal it when finished for that extra moisture protection. Would be great to see the results.

      It's about 38mm thick. The depth front to back is around 67cm and the length ended up around 2.8metres.

      Yeah i know with the music. I've been sorting that out on later videos. Been giving it more a background feel than in your face. Thanks for the feedback. Any more videos you would like to see?

    And the people on Etsy charge 250 for this sort of thing 😳

    • @ProjectGarethNorman
      @ProjectGarethNorman  3 года назад +1

      I know what you mean. I do see why to an extent. The time and effort put in by someone to make it, when you add it up would probably be about that. Though etsy is sometimes overpriced to tap into the upper middle class market. Watch this space for 'rustic reclaimed vintage eco friendly desks' 🤣.

    • @peteregg4304
      @peteregg4304 3 года назад +1

      @@ProjectGarethNorman yeah, the effort is a lot. I understand some of the prices but 250 for a 100cm long 'reclaimed scaffold board vintage eco friendly' desk is a joke

    • @ProjectGarethNorman
      @ProjectGarethNorman  3 года назад +1

      @@peteregg4304 I agree it is a joke, but at the same time, if someone is willing to pay, there will always be someone to take advantage. If i ever do make anything for sale, it would be materials+time+beer money, so not inflated too much.

Just don't expect a nice response when you , basically don't read a previous reply about the sound, and try...and i do mean try to troll someone with a pathetic comment. When you create some videos, i hope yours are perfect straight off the bat. I'm pretty sure they won't be, but who am i to judge. If your not interested, just clear off and annoy someone else.
