Just like Mercedes, who tried in the Eighties with a modern engined Gullwing by AMG. But even the great Carroll Shelby did it himself, with various manufacturers, and also Ford did it in the Eighties with Brian Angliss who had bought the right to the AC name and started producing recreation Cobra's. Ford tried to sue him, but they never copyrighted the name Cobra, and still don't own it today or GT40 either. That's why the representation of a modern GT40 was called the Ford GT, and the same for the latest money spinner for them with V6, and the very tight cockpit.
When you have a major manufacturer saying that you garage is a "special place," you are a car God. Much respect to you Mr Leno. Love the show and the way you and the guests give so much detail about their cars.
It's true. A lot of it has to do with crash safety standards. It's simply not possible to incorporate today's requirements for a production vehicle in the shape of cars from yesteryear.
Why would they go to all the trouble then only produce nine cars? I wonder if they're only able to skirt safety and emissions rules to register these new cars because they are able to use the chassis numbers of the original nine?
I wanna thank Jay for making this show and teaching us the history of cars. It's an amazing show, and this is definitely one of the most beautiful cars I've seen so far. Once again, thank you so much and please keep doing this amazing show. visiting your garage has become one of my dreams!
For sure - an education, as well as the only way I could ever “experience” these cars to this degree. I feel like I’m collecting cars vicariously thru Jay’s videos….
Crossley / Goodyear's disk brake episode lasted six months as they were not practical. Non practical disk brakes on road cars were first tried in the 1900s by Lanchester! Jag / Dunlop were the first to succeed in racing and Austin Healey with Dunlop disk brakes on all four corners on a series production vehicle. Very much Jay Leno to roll out his amazing 'knowledge'
hydorah , yes Jay is an educated car nut. Kudos to him. Chrysler also tried disc brakes in the fifties and failed. He doesn't open his mouth just to see if his foot will fit.
Standard Jay phrases that always make me smile are over use of the term 'hilarious' every thing is 'hilarious' and the way he always says 'spudomemeter' when surveying the gauges in a car... Oh and the double denim suits are quite a thing. He's definitely a character!
Jay was right. Disc brakes were not invented by Jag, they were the first to perfect them for cars. A little mistake there, or probably just a slip as the guy was highly knowledgeable. As was mentioned the Austin Healey was the first to have them on a production car. I think Citroen were the first to have them on a non-sporty car.
Maybe for the "car guys" who watch the show your producers could add an element where the cars are on the lift for a portion of the discussion; the Jag would have been a good specimen to poke around under...
Both Jay and Tim are accurate. The Crosley Hot Shot was first car with a disc type brake system but it didn't work well at all and prone to lock up. Jaguar was the first to make the modern and reliable caliper-type disc brakes, which first appeared in 1953 on the Jaguar C-Type racing car.
Although a small (under 100) batch of Austin Healey 100S with disc brakes were made with discs which pre-dated it, in terms of series production cars (circa 1.5 million built) the first type to be fitted with reliable, highly effective disc brakes was the Citroën DS available from October 1955. Kudos for Jaguar's use of disc braking in their race vehicles but they were *not*, as was claimed, first to use them in a production street car.
Very interesting,Brett. I'll have to educate myself more on this. Would you give me some good link sources on the topic? Most of my knowledge comes from being a car fanatic and what I read growing up. My only vintage car now is a '59 bug.
After the loss of '52 Le Mans against Mercedes when several of the aerodinamical low nose C_Type Model fell out because of overheated drum brakes! Jaguar had to think something new and they did.
Just beautiful. I love that Jay also loves Jaguars; that he feels the engine noise rather than just hearing it and is unashamed in this eco world about his passion for cars.
as usual, Jay cannot contain his enthusiasm for a car. That's one of the many reasons we love him out in the automotive universe. it would be easy to get jaded and prefer the new stuff over the classics, but many of us enjoy the nostalgia of driving a machine that is behind the times technologically, but light years ahead in fun. Well done Jay AND Jag.
Cars used to be machines of passion, art and performance. People who drove truly had to master the art and driving was a rewarding activity. Most of today's cars could not be more opposite. Great vid Jay! Keep em coming!
I remember reading about the XKSS as a schoolboy, some 50 years ago, and being amazed to learn about this car from the fifties which made an E-Type look slow! Amazing that Jaguar has now made a few more. But they really should have had a big production run and brought the price way down so that I could afford one ! :-) I'd be happy to swap my 2009 MX5 for one.... ......
The (heavily modified) XK120 was driven by Norman Dewis in Jabbeke, Belgium, close to or even a bit over 170 miles per hour. In the late 90's they went at it again, this time with a XK180 and I recall Norman was there as well. Nice to have had the opportunity to briefly chat with this great driver.
There are many fantastic car museums world wide but no one is a living museum as Jay´s in which we can know realy about the machines not only the history and details also see them on the road and...LISTEN to the motor music (- at home, me in Brazil ! -) thanks Jay.
Impressed with the reps knowledge and passion. I’m used to having to explain a companies history or models to the salesman trying to sell me one of their cars.
Womb Raider Me too, I have had cars in the past, even cool ones, but when I had a different job and no wife and child. I had to choose between car or family. I had a 1991 Celica 4x4 rallye car Japanese import for a while, and a crazy modded 1998 US spec VW beetle in Europe. Miss them, believe it or not I miss the beetle more, it looked like a HotWheels toy car, super low, fancy 18" giant wheels, and tons of mods all over, xenon, led lights, custom paint, Golf engine, custom exhausts all the way.
Find your favorite car buy sheets of aluminum an English wheel and a shop hammer and a Shop bag and start beating away and make your favorite car buy whatever brand new engine you want make her own chassis learn how to weld so you can make your dream car you can make it look better than a real one. Have Fun!!!!
Do what I'm doing, buying the best model of the cars I can't afford. I've got a dark purple one by autoart, and it's amazingly detailed. Trying for a D-type, but struggling plus the 'unicorn' racecar the XJ13. I think the most beautiful car designed by Malcolm Sayer, and which unfortunately has been restored badly in the mid 70's after one of the rear wheels collapsed whilst being shown off to Prince Phillip. The late Norman Dewis, was a rear gunner in Wellington and Lancaster bombers in WW2. He had a high chance of not returning from a sortie as the rear gunner was always the first to be killed if attacked by an enemy plane. He did shoot a few planes down, and was one of the rare lucky ones to survive. But unfortunately he died last year, which was a bad year for losing the best of the best. To all that we last, pedal to the metal forever.
The Jaguar was my favorite as boy. Nothing has changed. Even virtually, the way Leno presents this, I get emotional. You feel the magnificence of this car. I recently saw, and spoke with the original owners, a couple who had their first date in the same fully restored 56' Gullwing, silver in color, on perhaps their final tour in the car as they passed through NW Montana. Wonderful people, wonderful car, stunningly beautiful combination. The XKSS is probably the more beautiful and exciting vehicle. But the Gullwing experience might be like meeting Steve McQueen and his car, 60 years latter. Surprised that Leno does not have one by now? I'd sell half my fleet and live in that car.
I went to the peterson museum today went on the vault tour and was able to see McQueens jag. thanks for putting all of these machines in motion for us Jay!
How beautiful this car is while just sitting still. I am so grateful for you sharing this work of art. By far, one of my most treasured cars. Thank You
Must say as a journeyman electrician/antique engine restorer the new high perf LED lighting system in this garage is doing its job.. No more hum, heat and saves energy. Good upgrade there Jay. I admit I love my HID lamps but I'm warming to the new tech.. The Jag, oh are they so special. Old tooling, old builders, bringing a tragedy into a birth. Kudos Jay and Jaguar.
Wonderful car. I can't put to words how desirable it is. Jay, thank you for sharing this tiny slice of heaven of which we would normally never get to experience.
the most baller thing ive ever seen. this multi millionaire drove up to the Rolex vintage car festival in his original xkss for the day to then drive his original d type on the track. at the time i think the estimated value for the 2 cars was 4 million. i dont know now.
Just another example of how cool Steve McQueen was to have the vision so few others did at the time. There aren't many new cars I would choose over this one. Perhaps none. Simply incredible.
Man n man, Jay You made me remember my worst nightmare as a mechanic kid.... Had a customers...his wife had a porche and he had an xke.... They came to my bosses shop for everythmg.......my worst day was when I had to change the water pump on the xke.....I was 19 then... My flippin back still hurts now. And I'm 66....I just can't undertamd how the men who did that work all day all week survived.......:) :) :)
@@dgeorge852 Even Enzo Ferrari called it the most beautiful car in the world. High praise indeed. He also said the only thing wrong with it was it did not have a Ferrari badge.
@@dgeorge852 I would have to agree. I had several Jags back in the 90's and they were the best things I have ever bought myself. i had a nice silver XJ6 and I saw a 5 speed manual which was very rare so I bought it too and my girlfriend and business partner was ok about it but when I came home with a third I did get a bit of hassle, but it was well worth it. She really had a face on when myself and a friend rented a building that would have held about 50 cars and we proceeded to fill it over half full, but that was worth the dark looks too.
Excellent episode. Jay could make it even better if he didn't give in to the urge to talk over the guest before he has finished what he was trying to say. Full credit to Tim, he was very professional and got the information across in a an accessible way.
On the disc brake issue, Hanning had it coming (Jaguar DID NOT develop them!) - Jay was 100% correct about the history behind disc brakes and how they got into automobiles.
To put it in an English word, Brilliant! One of the most beautiful automobiles ever made.. Some of the sleekest and sexiest lines of any care and of course that jewel of an engine, that sound. Pure music to any car 'persons' ear... The color combo is just PERFECT and so British.. For some reason, whenever I see that car, I am immediately reminded of the old Spitfire airplane.. I think it's the rear wheel well/cut-out that does that for some reason.. Its just SO British.. I can just SEE Steve McQueen tooling around in that.. The King of Cool, driving one of the coolest cars EVER built.. They were in fact made for each other...
I feel actually pain that I'll never own or drive one of these, it hurts. XKSS and the Miura, the two most beautiful cars ever made. * Of course the Alfa Romeo Type 33 Stradale would be the perfect trifecta.
People want what they can't have. People who get what they want become bored/disillusioned. That is how rich guys wind up with 50 cars (I don't mean Mr. Leno, of course!).
Other collectors might gain the continuation car, but no one deserve to have one of these continuation cars in his collection, like Jay Leno. That it is the original is something special. Very special. AF
When I was about 13 or 14 my father wanted buy an XKE with a blown motor. It had the 4.2L engine but my Dad had a line on 3.8L out of a sedan. The owner wanted $2000 and Dad offered him $850. They couldn''t come to an agreement. Years later when I had a gotten out of school and got a good job I went back and the Jag was still in the same place with a Scottish thistle growing through the roof. No I didn't even ask how much he wanted for it.
Technology has ruined it for classic collectors. More specifically, digital technology. 50 years from now, all these touch screen panels will be obsolete. The OS will be out for generations. Meanwhile the analog classics now will still be viable and collectible.
replacement/reproduction components will ALWAYS exist. where there is a dollar to be made, the aftermarket will step up and fill that void. we tend to be drawn to the cars of our childhood - cars from the '70s & '80s are only climbing in value and becoming collectibles now, and the '90s to present day has only seen BETTER cars be made - so there will always be desirable cars, there will always be collector cars.
Reverend Eslam Or the Zonda. Or the Carrera GT. Or the 911 R. Actually, there are lots of examples of extremely good and/or interesting moderna cars; fact is, they are very far and between, but there are more than some good ones and future classics.
Stirling Moss was in Lakeland FL for the Mirror Lake Show as honorary. My friend mentioned he had his Bugeye displayed. His first car, bought before going to Viet Nam. Stirling said he had had one and loved it. Then asked to see it. After sitting in it, Stirling took a marker and signed his dash. 👍 Great guy.
They can't due to modern specs. That body would be illegal to sell without meeting crash standards and the lights and bumpers are not placed correctly and don't meet standards. As of 2013, you can't even sell a car without stability control and abs brakes. As such, the 9 XKSS' they are making are not street legal. The people shelling out $1.25 million can only drive around on their country estates.
Absolutely gorgeous! But I can't help myself... the 38 people who gave this a 'Thumbs Down' are just trolls, idiots, plain and simple. Ah well to each their own. To me, it's even more than rolling art. Stunning automobile! Thanks Jay!
Didn’t some rapper just survive a massive accident cause he got thrown from his Ferrari - obviously they save lives but there are many times they can be traps too
This guy goes back and forth across the pond from British to American English every second word. I used to do the same, I was trying no to offend the other party, but it was pointed out to me I just sound weird. So now I just stick to British English and let the Americans assume I'm gay.
He's my linguistic neighbour and I know he's doing the best he can. I'm Dutch and I was like him: You get taught British English in high school, but you get American English in all the media you consume at the same time. It's very confusing for us.
You can't call this car a reproduction. It was made by the original company using essentially the same components as the original run. It's pretty much a continuation of the line... just following a nearly 60 year pause. Regardless, though, it's a real beauty. I especially like the tan/brown interior they chose for this one... I think it's much nicer than the black on the Steve McQueen car we saw Jay driving in this video.
Me too. The car is supposed to be green, bnut it sure looked gray under those lights. I suppose the only way to find out how it looks in daylight is to buy one.
i had the fortune of seeing an original one once (video on my channel) and this one is 100% identical.. its amazing that jaguar built 9 new ones.. its like they took cars from 1957, froze them in time and got them out this year.
@Jamie Mills Yes, we all know that but we like our version better. It more typifies universal expression. 9 out of 10 car people really do think that the E-Type is the most beautiful design in the world. A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
What an awesome car. Utterly gorgeous... even glorious. Sit in it and it encapsulates you... at one with the car. Start the engine, and it thunders. Simply amazing.
I believe you refer to the Brussels to Ostend highway at Jabbeke in Belgium Flanders where several speed records achieved at the time. Was also the road to our holidays on Belgian coast, unbeknownst to us it was theater of such glorious moments. That was at the back of my father’s NSU 1200 TT. Whish you can find one to test on your show. Would bring tears to my eyes for sure.
Hehe, technically Lanchester Motor company invented them in 1902, but they were bought by Daimler and later Jaguar, so I guess Jag owns the rights. But by that logic Tata invented the disk brakes as they own Jag, Daimler and Lanchester now lol
Jonny B Glad that you caught that. The classic XK engine that powered all Jaguars from 1948 through the 50s, 60s, and 70s had many virtues, but it was a long stroke (4 inch?) engine. Its rev limit was defined by the ability of its pistons to travel that long stroke without the heat of friction welding the pistons to the cylinder walls.
A fellow from Chicago brought one of these painted a deep purple to an SCCA event at Indianapolis Raceway Park in the early '60's. His car was incredibly good looking, but the guy didn't know anything about the car's mechanicals. The Jag had a cam cover leak that we couldn't fix despite all the Perm-A-Tex we could find. I was there hanging out in the pits while my Dad was a corner worker.
5.2 is the lowest, real, 0-60 time with this car. I want to see the proof of this car getting close to 4.2. And good for Jay calling out the "suit in a polo" for the Jaguar invented disk breaks comment.
I love Jags. I had quite a few when I was wealthier than i am now. They are undoubtedly, pound for pound (or dollars) the best cars in the world. I loved the XJ6 series 3, I had 5 of them. T he best cars I ever owned by far. I regularly did a 212 mile drive and if it took over 2 hours it was due to traffic and I would be annoyed. I once did the run in an hour and 46 mins which was a lot of fun. You could never do that now with all the damn cameras. If you really want a treat and can afford the fuel, get yourself a Jag. They supposedly did 16 to 18 to a gallon but I never got double figures. 6 to 8 was what mine did but that may have been the way I used to drive.
@Desmond Bagley. That is certainly not a "fact" however long it has supposedly been established. It is merely an opinion. Also it is simply my opinion that a Jaguar is a real experience worth having if you are in any way a "rev head". If you want eonomical motoring then you are not going to choose a Jaguar but if mpg matters to you then you are very unlikely to "love" your car in the way that I loved my Jags and my motor cycles. Undoubtedly a Honda or toyota may be a wiser choice economicaly but you will never get out of one with a huge grin and the feeling of utter joy which only a serious motor car can bring. Even a Honda NSX which does have impressive performance is very clinical and is just not an "experience" Jags had a reputation for being unreliable but that was simply people not understanding what they were driving. A Jaguar is an enthusiasts car and needs an hour or two on the weekend. They are supposed to burn oil. That is not a fault. If you drive several hundrd miles then you need to put a pint of oil in to get home or it will overheat. You need to remember that the six cylinder engine used in most old Jags was designed just after the war but was smooth enough to balance a coin on it while running and was still in use in 1986. To compare a Jaguar and a Honda really is apples and pears. They are not the same in any way other than they both have round wheels.
Before I went to jail 😂 then I broke my hip 😭😞 💀 within a couple of months I used to restore these cars... Even Mike Brewers Host of Wheeler dealer on the discovery channel did a show at my shop...
My father was a huge Jag fan. He was a diesel mechanic his whole lie but built hot rods for others on the side because he couldn't afford to build one for himself because of his 7 children. Me being the oldest. I helped him from a very young age. I to picked up on the love that he had for cars and the love of building something from nothing. Seeing hand built cars reminds me of my father and when it's a Jag it it really hits home. One of the fastest cars he ever built was from a Triumph 1960 TR3 that he installed a 289 in. It was never talked about after it killed it's owner. This happened back in the late 70's and brake up grades was not a priority when this was built.
SIMKINETICS I knew you were joking, his accent is actually a little odd, he has a slight English twang to his African accent too, to muddy the waters. Apart from anything else, the accents of the British isles are puzzlingly diverse, I'm South Coast and my voice is vastly different to someone from Yorkshire, let alone other UK accents from Scotland, Wales and Ireland, none of which are more than 500 miles away You can tell South Africans, they always sound a bit angry, and Aussies always sound like they are asking a question (closing upper intonation, some bits of California do it too)
There are astonishing modern cars but you don't have enough money to buy them, just like you wouldn't have enough money to buy this car when it was brand new.
Big respect to Jaguar for the exquisite work on those cars and that they did it in this day and age.
They obviously aren't doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.
Just like Mercedes, who tried in the Eighties with a modern engined Gullwing by AMG. I get chills just looking at that car. Jaguar was so far ahead at that time, what a work of art!
Its so fun to watch Jay Leno when he's totally amazed and nerding out over a car. You can tell this particular Jag is special to him.
Personally I believe that most old cars look way better than today's cars.
I believe that, too, but I'd argue that most new cars are waaay better in safety, practicality, and performance. Tech marches onwards...
computiNATEor true but I like fun. And fun over safety once and awhile isn't bad.
Miguel Hernandez ...it's true, they really don't make them like they used to. Cars had a personality, a soul, cars didn't have to be fast to be fun
Yeah, true. But new cars are safer, faster, more powerful, better mileage, way better reliability. Less fun though...
It's true. A lot of it has to do with crash safety standards. It's simply not possible to incorporate today's requirements for a production vehicle in the shape of cars from yesteryear.
shouts out to Jaguar for going through the effort to make this
Why would they go to all the trouble then only produce nine cars? I wonder if they're only able to skirt safety and emissions rules to register these new cars because they are able to use the chassis numbers of the original nine?
+MathsYknow yes, exactly. Just like the e-type lightweight they've done
MathsYknow I believe so yes! Also the things they learned were probably invaluable
Ayyye what's up Tony
+MathsYknow - Nope. The 9 cars are NOT street legal. The rich owners can only drive around on their private estates.
Episodes like this one are the reason I love to watch this show. Thank you.

It is a joy seeing Jay so happy and in his element.
I think this is my favorite of all the cars Jay has featured on his channel. What an amazing vehicle.
Have you checked out the Doble steam car? That just blows my mind.....
They are doing a great job at Jaguar at all levels...who would thought that this might happen again a few years ago?
Good ol Jay, teaching the guy who the real expert is.
AlexCoronaPhoto yes I cringed a little at that

YES!!!!!! 'Savagegeese' does this...and it's great edit- actually, Jay has done this before i remember
Really good idea
He does do it for some cars, I would like to see it done more.
GREAT IDEA!
Maybe do an extended version for people that want to see the WHOLE car.

Just beautiful.

simply the most beautiful car built by jaguar that's just awesome
The E-Type, Xj-13, Xj-15 and the. XJ220 are more beautiful.

But the Gullwing experience might be like meeting Steve McQueen and his car, 60 years latter. Surprised that Leno does not have one by now? I'd sell half my fleet and live in that car.
What a Wonderful thing they are doing, Re-creating these Great Car's once again.
I went to the peterson museum today went on the vault tour and was able to see McQueens jag. thanks for putting all of these machines in motion for us Jay!
What a fabulous car Jay, thanks for the film
How beautiful this car is while just sitting still. I am so grateful for you sharing this work of art. By far, one of my most treasured cars.
Thank You
Now that's a beautiful car.
I love that sound oh my gosh it's so beautiful that car is fantastic i hope we see it again thank you jay
Exclent work. I appreciate the crasmanship that went into this. Probably could be done in ones garage. End of an era.
it gives u a little warm feeling inside its amazing what passionate people can make thanks for sharing
OutlawUniverse
OutlawUniverse - Fascinating.
They are priced way higher than that.
Last one sold at auction for over $18,000,000.oo.
Just another example of how cool Steve McQueen was to have the vision so few others did at the time. There aren't many new cars I would choose over this one. Perhaps none. Simply incredible.
It is so cool of Jaguar to do this. I wonder if it will start a trend of manufacturers making brand new built models of their classics.
The remake of the Dodge Charger SUCKS.
The new ones are FOUR DOORS.
Alvis cars did a similar project heres a link

Man n man, Jay
You made me remember my worst nightmare as a mechanic kid....
Had a customers...his wife had a porche and he had an xke....
They came to my bosses shop for everythmg.......my worst day was when I had to change the water pump on the xke.....I was 19 then...
My flippin back still hurts now. And I'm 66....I just can't undertamd how the men who did that work all day all week survived.......:) :) :)
im not a classic car guy but this thing is just amazing pure classic the true classic
The XKE was voted as the BEST LOOKING car of the 20th century.
@@dgeorge852 Even Enzo Ferrari called it the most beautiful car in the world. High praise indeed. He also said the only thing wrong with it was it did not have a Ferrari badge.
@@Silverhand290 .
My dad offered to buy me a used one, but I opted for a new GTO instead.
All I can say is:
STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!!!
Jay I respect the fact of you being true to the craft and yourself.
"Jaguar invented the disc brake"
Cue Jay completely taking that claim apart.
@Jordie Evans c'mon! invented does not mean applied
We all love Jay. That’s an awesome comment.
That is so grate that they made a remake of the car. Just wonderful to see it back on the road again.
Buy it jay!!!!!!!!!
He can't afford it.
His garage is so full, he would have to build an addition onto it.
love listening to Jay. so enthusiastic so knowledgeable and deferential too to the Classic Cars.
Sometimes I agree with you but with ones like this I think it is good that he doesn't always just let the sales blurb run and run.
Tim, has maybe the best job in the world. My ultimate car and I am happy Jag is doing what they are doing!
50's and 60's Jaguar design is still some of the most beautiful automotive design ever done.
Enzo Ferrari said the same!
Alfa Romeo Type 33 Stradale?
agreed

People want what they can't have. People who get what they want become bored/disillusioned. That is how rich guys wind up with 50 cars (I don't mean Mr. Leno, of course!).
The Lotus 14 Elite and Lola Mk1 are rather nice, and very aerodynamic. Personally I find the XKSS looks a little goggle-eyed, and prefer the D
Gorgeous episode, riveted the entire time. Thanks, Jay.
Gorgeous! Such amazing styling. Sounds like a spitfire, to-boot...
Other collectors might gain the continuation car, but no one deserve to have one of these continuation cars in his collection, like Jay Leno. That it is the original is something special. Very special. AF
In 1956 4.2 second 0-60 was literally unbelievably fast. Awesome car.
Everyone bangs on about V8's and V12's.
That straight six sound was where it's at though. The sweet spot!
when i was about 13 a local garage was selling a 61 xke for $1100 bucks
It apparently had a rod knock
1968 maybe
When I was about 13 or 14 my father wanted buy an XKE with a blown motor. It had the 4.2L engine but my Dad had a line on 3.8L out of a sedan. The owner wanted $2000 and Dad offered him $850. They couldn''t come to an agreement.
Years later when I had a gotten out of school and got a good job I went back and the Jag was still in the same place with a Scottish thistle growing through the roof. No I didn't even ask how much he wanted for it.
Stunning car - I stood next to the Steve McQueen Jaguar XKSS at a motor show in Portland Oregon in 2011 and would have loved to drive it.
Technology has ruined it for classic collectors. More specifically, digital technology. 50 years from now, all these touch screen panels will be obsolete. The OS will be out for generations. Meanwhile the analog classics now will still be viable and collectible.
bulok69 Ore they are radical persons like Enzo Ferrari like the example of the F40
"...not that many modern cars would ever be worthy of being collected."
The Porsche 918 being one exception.
Yeah. I'd really love to see someone build an analog electric supercar.
replacement/reproduction components will ALWAYS exist. where there is a dollar to be made, the aftermarket will step up and fill that void.
we tend to be drawn to the cars of our childhood - cars from the '70s & '80s are only climbing in value and becoming collectibles now, and the '90s to present day has only seen BETTER cars be made - so there will always be desirable cars, there will always be collector cars.
Reverend Eslam Or the Zonda. Or the Carrera GT. Or the 911 R.
Actually, there are lots of examples of extremely good and/or interesting moderna cars; fact is, they are very far and between, but there are more than some good ones and future classics.
such a beautiful car. Thanks Jay Leno for sharing. I wish manufacturers would make cars like this again with modern technology
Back over bentwards
😂
What's a back over?
+Shamil Ameer Illegal in most countries.
Shamil Ameer
3.34 Cantilevered over, when Jay meant Canted.
I think this should replace the F-Type, going into full mass production.
Chris Henniker No way. This has nothing on the F-type. Replacing the unnecessary XE is a different story. Or the F-pace.
sprawl nod New cars have too much to go wrong with them.
Ok, Ken M.
sprawl nod Depends on how many you make, small series often get exemptions.
i saw 1 of the originals on the road on the A660 thru leeds back in 1974/5. didn't realise at the time how rare that sighting was.
Absolutely gorgeous! But I can't help myself... the 38 people who gave this a 'Thumbs Down' are just trolls, idiots, plain and simple. Ah well to each their own. To me, it's even more than rolling art. Stunning automobile! Thanks Jay!
I hadn't even looked at the Thumbs down votes, because it just seemed Ludacris that anybody could be that dumb, and still be breathing. Lol 😅
Jay, thanks for doing You Tube. Wonderful to watch on a regular basis.
The most beautiful car of all time.
I beg your pardon. It is not.!!! The E-Type is.
It's right up there, that's for sure. I'd list it in with my top 5....
The car Jay is driving is British Racing Green. The one they're looking at in the garage is a different grey-green color. Both are gorgeous.
The one they’re looking at in the garage is a colour called Sherwood Green. It was a very popular Jaguar colour in the 1950s and 1960s.
172MPH with no seatbelts! Sign me up!
The "High-speed blowout" takes on a whole new meaning!
Don't worry, if you exit the car at that speed it only hurts for a second! lol
Would that not cause an annoying sound, BEEP BEEP BEEP! LOL!
Didn’t some rapper just survive a massive accident cause he got thrown from his Ferrari - obviously they save lives but there are many times they can be traps too
I've never seen Jay as close to tears as the moment it fired up.
This guy goes back and forth across the pond from British to American English every second word. I used to do the same, I was trying no to offend the other party, but it was pointed out to me I just sound weird. So now I just stick to British English and let the Americans assume I'm gay.
Daniel van Slooten he is german. i don't think he does it on purpose
He's my linguistic neighbour and I know he's doing the best he can. I'm Dutch and I was like him: You get taught British English in high school, but you get American English in all the media you consume at the same time.
It's very confusing for us.
I'm actually positive he's also Dutch, but spent a lot of time in the UK and the US.
Sounded South African to me.
German influence
beautiful jewelry is just that...beautiful, and that is what this machine is. Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed it!
Shame we didn't get to see Jay drive the reproduction. I was looking forward to seeing how it looked on the road under the sun.
Sven3xs Steve MacQueens' car, from a while back.
Larque Fausse
Me too. The car is supposed to be green, bnut it sure looked gray under those lights. I suppose the only way to find out how it looks in daylight is to buy one.
Hopefully Jay buys one, then we'll see it put through its paces...whoohoo can't wait.
I live the colour and finish of the wheels. It is so evocative of engineering of that time, like the metal of a Leica camera.
For Jay the Jag's gonna need a slightly larger Entrance Helper.
i had the fortune of seeing an original one once (video on my channel) and this one is 100% identical.. its amazing that jaguar built 9 new ones.. its like they took cars from 1957, froze them in time and got them out this year.
I tilt to the side because I have a shorter leg. I'm like a Jag! Low to the ground and with a power bulge.
Another fantastic video! Thank you, Jay.
That is the very best yet a beautiful motor car .🇬🇧
Wow, what a marvellous machine
Why is it that everytime you have a Jag on the show, I just have to take my '71 XJ to work the next day? :D
I did the Jag/Land booth at the auto show a couple years ago, wish I did it this year!
IMO, Enzo Ferrari was right! Although this is the predecessor to the beautiful XKE, it's even more beautiful!
Np it's not
!!!!!
@Jamie Mills Yes, we all know that but we like our version better. It more typifies universal expression. 9 out of 10 car people really do think that the E-Type is the most beautiful design in the world. A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
No it's not it's stunted.
What an awesome car.
Utterly gorgeous... even glorious.
Sit in it and it encapsulates you... at one with the car.
Start the engine, and it thunders.
Simply amazing.
I've always thought that the D-type was the most beautiful car ever made, followed by the E-type. The rest are also-rans....
deltavee2 I have always said the same thing. A Spitfire for the road
Jay stumped him on that disc brake topic. lol
Hehe, technically Lanchester Motor company invented them in 1902, but they were bought by Daimler and later Jaguar, so I guess Jag owns the rights. But by that logic Tata invented the disk brakes as they own Jag, Daimler and Lanchester now lol
+Darius Hammond He also fouled up on the 8K rev limit. The red line @ 6500 was right there! Kids!
Jonny B
Glad that you caught that. The classic XK engine that powered all Jaguars from 1948 through the 50s, 60s, and 70s had many virtues, but it was a long stroke (4 inch?) engine. Its rev limit was defined by the ability of its pistons to travel that long stroke without the heat of friction welding the pistons to the cylinder walls.
by daimler you mean the british daimler motor company, not daimler AG from germany. Tata doesn't own Daimler AG.
I took all the other comments from the Jag guy with a grain of salt thereafter, the steering wheel comments, etc. Very nice car though
*brakes
I'm in love!!!!!!!!!!
A heartwarming tribute and a fine classic 'rod...thanks for sharing.
"Jaguar invented the disc break"
Jay: "oh no you dont..."
Rockroyaltymc 😁👍🏼
Yeah, Jay just HAD to 'school' him a bit didn't he? Crosly..... Only Leno.. A walking, talking car encyclopedia.
One of my favorite cars of all time, it's beautiful
This happened back in the late 70's and brake up grades was not a priority when this was built.
twissted, from an English bloke, I love you yanks, if you do something you do it right.
4:08 *...back over bentwards...*
Yeah, somebody's got to teach those Brits how to speak *English!*
He's South African
Dominic Rivers
It was sarcasm. To us unsophisticated 'mericans... Aussies, Kiwi's and Seffricans are all just 'Brits'!
SIMKINETICS I knew you were joking, his accent is actually a little odd, he has a slight English twang to his African accent too, to muddy the waters.
Apart from anything else, the accents of the British isles are puzzlingly diverse, I'm South Coast and my voice is vastly different to someone from Yorkshire, let alone other UK accents from Scotland, Wales and Ireland, none of which are more than 500 miles away
You can tell South Africans, they always sound a bit angry, and Aussies always sound like they are asking a question (closing upper intonation, some bits of California do it too)
Thanks for that info. He's pretty much lost that gutteral SA accent, so, as a Kiwi, I had trouble placing him.
I saw one of the originals at Cliveden House and spoke to the owner, top bloke who was happy working on his own car. Magic.
I wish cars were made like that still.
well, this cars are very unsafe in case of the accident...
There are astonishing modern cars but you don't have enough money to buy them, just like you wouldn't have enough money to buy this car when it was brand new.
How do you know that he can't buy them?
look, i didn't want to be rude, I just wanted to say that there are new cars which are pieces of art, but are too expensive for most of people
???
They are made like this still, it was made in 2016.
Awesome car. I've always admired it and envied those who were able to actually drive them. Spectacular!!!
