Your laptop repair videos are an inspiration! It looks like I just fixed an old Lenovo Ideapad laptop using the method of one of your older laptop repair videos. Laptop was powering on, but no POST. I tried various resets and the special CMOS start button to get it going, but to no avail. Given that power on seemed fine, I suspected that that a corrupted BIOS may be the culprit. It took a few weeks to get all the little adaptors for my TL866-II plus EEPROM programmer, but I was able to hot air the bios chip off, reflash it using my programmer, then reinstalled it (I replaced the old solder with fresh leaded solder ... easier to work with) and now it seems I get a successful post and boot. So yay for me and my customer.
Cheap alternative to air compressor that isn't an environmental nightmare like canned air... go a Decathlon and get an airbed pump (the manual kind with a big plunger, not the foot operated ones). It'll cost you about a tenner and comes with a fine nozzle. These high volume pumps can deliver a lot of air and are great for blasting out dust!
Gj man👍👍👍 u treat your cust things like yours, majority of repairshop just replace/rep the broken parts, dont care bout thermal paste, dust, filthy screen etc etc...
If people would be confident enough to open THEIR laptops to clean them, they would also be confident enough to replace the fans (in this case) and Graham would have much less work. Screens are completely different thing - I agree with you there.
If caught early, you can fix the stalled fan just by putting a little bit of oil in the bearing and spinning the blades to free it up. Should fix it unless the motor itself burned out.
@@SproutyPottedPlant Whats the NHS got to do with the situation ?.Another silly comment .And surly even the busiest of workers NHS or not has a couple of minutes to spare .The top and bottom of it is , is there are a lot of lazy dirty people out there
Hi friend great video! Let me ask you a question please... it happened the same to mine (although it had pretty a new fan), so I bought a new one and got it installed. Same message over and over. Do you might know what could be? I don't know what else to do. Thanks
Same here. I have a Pavilion 24 All In one PC and was getting the 90b error message. Ordered a brand new identical fan and installed it but still get the 90b error message it is very very frustrating!
I have the same laptop I just purchased for 40$ and it throws the same code and shuts down. Going to be looking at the fans of my other spare laptops pr buying one online and following this video to the T ! Thanks so much 🙏
I have this error on a HP Omen with a cpu and gpu fan, how do I know which fan the error message is for if both fans still spin / work? Both are free moving too
My rule for fans is usually that if it's spinning but making some noises, I would try to lubricate it and see what happens, but if it's like this case where the fan is completely seized up or not spinning at all and fan error is reporting, then usually the motor is gone and it's far too gone so I kinda have to replace it. This is because sometimes for old low end laptops, the fan is not that well made and the lubricant might have been dried up and so even if you buy a new old stock the fan will still grind until you lubricate the fan (this happened on my Compaq CQ56 where I had to replace the fan as the motor was burnt out but it started grinding after just days of operation until I lubricated it)
Many modern laptops from different brands are similar inside because they are built by Compal under licence. If you see a blue motherboard with a distinctive font it's probably made by Compal. They make laptops for HP, Dell, Lenovo and others.

Honestly not sure. I don't think it'll cause a problem, because the temp drop between the core die to the cold plate, then the cold plate back into the PCH, will be large enough to avoid trouble. However, for rule-of-thumb, the best course of action seems to be whatever the OEM was doing.
I note that you didn't test everything before you buttoned up all the shrouding. If that fan was tested, wouldn't one have seen whether or not that replacement fan was defective or not? Thanks for the content. Keep up the good work. בס'ד

I had to replace the thermal paste on my PS3 it got some Artic MX-4 and had to use Tesco glass cleaner to remove the old crusty thermal paste it worked very well thanks for the tips and videos
Nice, video. Why no HHD replacement for a SSD? I know that was not where the laptop was for in. But when you open it and see a HHD. You could call the customer and say, well my advice would be put a SSD in it, then your laptop will be a lot faster.
Hey quick question, I was wondering how you wentr about dealing with telling the client that a part for their computermight take a month to arrive? Do you keep their computer until then or do you tell them that you will call them back when you get the part? How do you work that out?
Communication is key. You just have to chat with them and say "This is the fault with the device, this is what I can offer, this is how long it will take. Would you like to proceed?"
I like your video but I would personally try to lubricate and fix that fan, if not fixable then order a new one. Same thing with fixing plastic screw holders and hinges. Hot glue makes wonders!
I can lubricate it, and roll the dice on it lasting another year, or another week, in which case the laptop comes back into the shop and I have to do the whole job again free of charge to the customer, and apologise profusely for not getting it right first time. Or I can spend a few quid on a new fan and know that it'll last the rest of the laptop's lifetime.
@metalacos toitally not worth it. Adamant IT is charging for their services and it makes totally sense to replace an item which suffers mechanical wear and tear. I could try lubricating my own laptop's fan but I wouldn't expect a service shop to try and patch such a simple and cheap item.
@@Leftfield2k7 Agreed. I won't go anywhere near a laptop with a hard drive unless it's running a lightweight Linux distribution. Waiting around for 5 minutes for Windows to get its shit together every time I turn on the computer is not fun.
Just repaired the fan, 3 metal shims under fan, some force pops right of, cland & a dropp of machine oil, No more start and stop. But a fan replacement would be better. Buddys laptop so its good enough
The 3v "bios battery" keeps the real time clock (CMOS) circuit running when the device is off. Contrary to popular belief, it does not power the BIOS chip itself. But removing the battery signals the CMOS circuit to reset, which also clears any custom settings from the BIOS chip. Many modern laptops don't have a BIOS battery, and just rely on the main battery for this now.
I will say, be careful when u remove screws from bottom and still open or close. All hinge pressure can be on a single screw, and crack mounts. Not a great idea People do this all the time.
I used to fix desktops/laptops for a living in the late 90's to 2009 but never learnt to fix motherboards or anything like that. How can someone learn? I guess in 2022 it's all via youtube videos? :)
to save everyone money just go buy a cooling pad from amazon made with fans and it will cool the system the same way boom problem fix just as simple saved you money and time all you need is 27 bucks thank you
Hard to tell. I would change the fan and see what happens. I think I've seen a HP that kept throwing up fan warnings even though the fan was spinning, and eventually I just changed the fan on that one - I can't remember if that solved it though, so your mileage may vary.
Nail polish remover is usually based on Acetone. It's very aggressive, I wouldn't use it for cleaning computer stuff unless you're very very very careful. It will often stain or even melt plastic. Isopropyl Alcohol is a lot safer to use, or for simply wiping down plastics, use glass cleaner (water/vinegar).
I've done that a few times. It'll work for a week, or a month maybe. Sometimes you get lucky and it'll keep going until the customer replaces the laptop... But in my experience, it'll likely come back in, with a customer who thinks you didn't do the job properly. New fan isn't expensive, just replace it is my mantra.
