It looks like Porsche perfected the sports car in 1955. Since then all the other carmakers have been copying it. It''s aero dynamic shape, gives it a low co-effcient of drag which improves gas mileage. By being all curves with no corners or edges, it makes less wind noise.
Being a sports car it is fun to drive on short trips, but not across a state. The engine is only 1600cc so it is less likely you will lose your license speeding.
By putting the engine in the rear it makes it easy to do a 4 wheel drift.
When they stopped making VW beetles in Mexico, they should have kept making the chassis and engine, upon which a fiberglass speedster body could be installed. They should offer an optional propane fueled version that could pass emissions. Those titanium wrist pins like the 911 has should be optional.
