The reason the Homicide Desk seems as weird as it is, is because its based off the Black Dahlia if I remember correctly. The Black Dahlia was a woman murdered in LA in 1947 and was famously a massive blunder for the LAPD that was never actually solved. Today a lot of people theorize it was the work of a serial killer which is what LA Noire went with. In the game the killer turned out to be the brother of a politician or something, which is why it was covered up and all the people you locked up would be quietly released.
To be fair the atmosphere was probably at its strongest in Homicide, outside of Arson. There's still a lot of theories to this day about the Dahlia murder especially.
The weird thing is you effectively framed every single suspect in your time at the homicide desk, all the evidence against everyone was entirely spurious.
The twist in the Vice Desk story where Cole cheats on his wife had me so fucking pissed I quit the game for six months. Because it came so out of left field.
@@shawnconway9957 You can actually see her in the game's intro cutscene when Cole leaves his house, but it doesn't actually highlight the fact that it's them. This is essentially the largest role Cole's wife has in the game prior to the divorce plotline.

This game has a well-deserved spot as one of my favourite games ever made. There's just nothing quite like LA Noire, it's almost like an entire genre on its own. And the characters, the world, the music, and the story of each individual case work so well together. Although I always enjoyed this game, I've definitely developed a deeper appreciation for it now in my adulthood compared to my teenage years when I first played it.
I hear you. I never forgot about it but also regrettably never finished it. I was also a bit too young (early twenties so still underdeveloped) when I first played it, but especially with the way the industry and medium has progressed since then (it hasn't in any real or positive way), I only appreciate quality products and standout oddball works more now. You're damn right it's unique and almost in its own genre. I'm aware of Sherlock adventure games with detectives as well as detective work, but nothing that's in the vein of Rockstar and yet isn't Rockstar. Oh, and just like with New Vegas, the devs worked with what they had to turn out something amazing only to seemingly be screwed over hard by the bigger company. Real champs and a real shame.
i definitely miss old mid-late rockstar. bully, LA Noire and GTA 4 are all very comfy even if i prefer san andreas. andreas is comfy more cause of the nostalgia and jank.
The "Clicking everything until it works" description is so accurate. When I first played the game, I didn't know who Winston Churchill was, so when you had to find the British boxer's hotel room, I just clicked every name in the ledger until it popped.
The clue from Roy of "look for famous tommies" had me looking for people with the name "Tommy" I didn't catch he meant famous Brits. I wasn't familiar with the slang "Tommy" to mean Brits.
Kelso bringing his war buddies with him to goddamn raid a mansion has to be the highlight for me. Because of all the things you did in the game, it for once made me ask: "Holy shit, isn't this illegal?" Especially when you know who that mansion belongs to.

Your comment is actually hilarious considering the fact that LA NOIR wasn't a hit it was so big of a flaw to the point that the studio that was developing it got shut down right after it's release 😅
No, we were thinking exactly the same 15 years ago. Read what people wrote about video games in the late 00' or early 10', many people found the latest releases were really low in quality compared to what existed a decade ago. Welcome into the world of "it was better before". In 15 years, people will still say it about today.
One problem I have with the game is a case that you tackle in the Homicide desk. ******Spoiler (obviously)***** It's the Golden Butterfly case. Long story short, a murdered woman ends up with two suspects- a husband who has a ton of evidence against him, and an 'overly friendly babysitter' that circumstantially fits the profile- but appears slightly more legitimate. If you could verify the blood on the husband's shoes as being nonhuman, it would probably make both men 50/50- but still. Your partner suggests at first to charge the "free hugs" suspect to protect the children- giving the husband a free pass for now, but your partner changes his mind and says the husband was the more likely culprit after you interview both men. HOWEVER- if you cuff the husband, that dildo of a captain of yours flips his shit and says you shamed the department- threatening to fire you if you fuck up again. PARDON ME for not wanting who i think actually did it to get a temporary pass for just enough time to book it to Tijuana.
So, I actually really love that part of the game and find it totally realistic. Here's a little essay I've written for you: A family member of mine was a detective, and he had a very similar experience. He was working a murder case, and the person they were looking to charge had a ton of very damming evidence against him. His bosses wanted to charge a group of suspects who really had nothing on them. The optics of shutting down an imagined human trafficking ring responsible for a murder would've looked a lot sexier than just bringing in a lone suspect. My family member persisted with trying to prove his case for that charge, so he was removed from the investigation and had any hopes of career advancement pretty much destroyed for doing so. His bosses continued pursuing this group, had them charged and tried with the flimsy evidence they'd come up with, and it was thrown out of court. 18 years later, the suspect my family member had tried to charge is now on trial for a whole slew of crimes, including that murder. Many of them were committed long after the murder my family member was investigating. It's too little too late for my family member, though. He retired on quite a shitty salary, and his mental health and relationships with the family are in tatters because of it. That little section of the game really kind of hit home for me. The way that you're put into a position where you have to adhere to your Captain's feelings about that suspect - which are totally understandable in that instance, don't get me wrong - or risk disciplinary action really shines a light on how politics, beliefs, emotions or egos all still come into play in law enforcement institutions. It can be as cutthroat and bullshit as any other business, these people aren't usually rewarded for doing their job if it conflicts with the interests of their superiors. However, during the first cutscene of the next case they actually reference the previous one. No matter who you charged with that murder, the Captain acts as if you charged the suspect that he didn't want you to charge. I think an ironic remark is made about him being happy with the result, and he leans over the table they're sitting at and furiously says "Over the moon, boys!" or something to that effect. That bugged me, because there clearly should've been a version of this cutscene where he was genuinely happy about the outcome of the previous case if the player had charged the guy that he wanted you to. Also, the stupid Black Dahlia case at the end really just kind of ruins this whole thing in order to make a very similar observation about police work in a more grandiose, yet dumber way. I wasn't a big fan of that, but I suppose perhaps the devs might've thought most people wouldn't have picked up on the more subtle version of it that we're talking about. I should point out though, considering how bad the conditions at Team Bondi were during the game's development, I'm not surprised to see these kinds of missteps. It's probably a miracle that we even got the game that we did.
i had exactly the same complaint, you also got a bad case grade if you arrested the husband. in my mind it seemed very idiotic and left me a bad taste in my mouth that they "forced" you in such a way to arrest the weirdo

@DerKurator I appreciate the kind words. So this isn't in the US, and a lot of this won't be public until the end of the year/early next year. Depending on the outcome and how I end up feeling about sharing specifics, I may throw a link somewhere here when it's all over. That comment took a lot of editing and rethinking just because it's all being dragged up again at the present moment after years. Honestly, I just wanted to speak about it because a part of the game I thought was really interesting was being criticised. Hell, when I first played the game, I thought it was stupid too. I didn't know anything about the things I've shared here when I first played the game. It's only looking back to that level after learning about and dealing with the fallout of what happened that I've started to appreciate it. Funny thing is, maybe I've totally missed the mark regarding what the developers were trying to portray in that level, I could be totally projecting for all I know.
L.A. Noire's a masterpiece: incredibly high production value combined with masterful storytelling and writing - it tells a serious, sincere, and mature story without falling into tedium, rigidity, or relying on seediness to keep the player's interest. I doubt we'll ever see another game like it. I absolutely _want_ a San Francisco Noire set maybe 20 years after L.A. Noire starring Jack Kelso as a private investigator... I just don't think it could be made today. Everything, for some reason, has to be soaking in irony or weaving (or shoehorning) anachronistic present-day activism throughout the narrative... something L.A. Noire completely avoids. It just tells a damn story... and a good one at that... and that's not something people seem capable of doing anymore, for some reason.
Ngl the Irish boss in this game had the second most infuriating face for me. There was something about him that came off as overly dramatic and like he wasn't quite genuine. Then of course Cole gets his bratwurst dipped and he suddenly becomes like "How could ya do dis tuh me, lad? Yer breakin me poor hart"
What i like about la noire is that instead of having the usual good guy wins and villain loses, it's one of the few games that actually show us that cole might be a good cop but he isn't flawless, he knows that he did alot of terrible things during ww2 and had an affair with elsa but that didn't stop him from trying to uncover the corruption of the police department, it shows us that there are people out there who are corrupt under a badge.
Joshi, you are one of the very few content creators that genuinely make me laugh out loud. Your videos are always a treat to watch and they never fail to make me smile. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Just watched the movie LA Confidential again for the first time in over a decade and it’s incredible how much that movie inspired LA Noire. There’s several lines of dialogue in LA Noire that are taken nearly verbatim from LA Confidential. The LAPD briefing room is also a one to one match in both the movie and game. It’s really cool.
PTSD from teenager me recording Cole's dialogue with hip hop music only for it to get half a million views and people constantly messaging me to let me know i didn't mix audio properly for a video i meant for 5 people
love how you bring up Cole's wife that appears for like one scene prior to the whole cheating scandal and how it makes that whole dramatic sequence means absolutely nothing and just gloss over his two unnamed daughters that only get mentioned during the twist scandal to further "twist the knife" and are only physically present during Cole's funeral in the epilogue, barely visible
Hey, a quick heads-up for those who consider to (re)play this masterpiece. Use Widescreen Fix tool to uncap frames, since by default it's capped at 30 f/s. This not only fixes frames and wide screens, but also somehow alters cars' physics, making it actually much better (more realistic).
On our next episode of the Black Yoshi Bionicle Chronicles, we head back to the 40s, a time when we were recovering from a second World War and everyone wore a suit and a fedora.

This is fuckin hilarious, nice work dude. British comedy is far from dead with you at the helm. Imagine if LA Noire had 5 cases only, four tutorials and then the final mission in the sewer 😂
I played the absolute hell out of this game back on Xbox 360, then got it again for free with my preorder of Max Payne 3. That's right, it's so old, it was back when I still thought preordering games was a good idea. LA Noire sits along Death Stranding for me in the category of "Games all my friends shat on for being too slow paced and movie like but aged like the finest wine in the cellar to me for some reason despite me also hating movie-esque games." because I mean, like Death Stranding, there's still nothing quite like it out there, so it sucks for the people like me who do want to see more of this kind of game.
This game sat in my steam library for quite a few years, wasn't really expecting to like it much but it turned out to be a really good game. A good blend of serious and campy, the main story was decent but the mission n stories were great with some heavy subject matter in a few. It's a good play, I highly recommend it.

16:40 is a certified dracula flow moment
What i like about la noire is that instead of having the usual good guy wins and villain loses, it's one of the few games that actually show us that cole might be a good cop but he isn't flawless, he knows that he did alot of terrible things during ww2 and had an affair with elsa but that didn't stop him from trying to uncover the corruption of the police department, it shows us that there are people out there who are corrupt under a badge.
True
I'd sacrifice my firstborn for a Joshi video on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Edit: YOOOOOOOOO (i didnt want kids anyway)
p r o v e
I'll sacrifice my left nut for a revirw of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
As long as its not anomaly or gamma
Better get ready to follow through on that promise. New stalker game coming out pretty soon. would make sense to make the video

Joshi, you are one of the very few content creators that genuinely make me laugh out loud. Your videos are always a treat to watch and they never fail to make me smile.
Keep doing what you’re doing!
1:14 this moment simply killed me
my favourite part of this video is when you say you didn't spoil anything but literally showed the ending in a gag
* bad boys bad boys what you gonna do when they come for you *
Just watched the movie LA Confidential again for the first time in over a decade and it’s incredible how much that movie inspired LA Noire. There’s several lines of dialogue in LA Noire that are taken nearly verbatim from LA Confidential. The LAPD briefing room is also a one to one match in both the movie and game. It’s really cool.
PTSD from teenager me recording Cole's dialogue with hip hop music only for it to get half a million views and people constantly messaging me to let me know i didn't mix audio properly for a video i meant for 5 people
bruh the editing and commentary are just *chefs kiss*. great vid mate!
Phelps is literally me
love how you bring up Cole's wife that appears for like one scene prior to the whole cheating scandal and how it makes that whole dramatic sequence means absolutely nothing
and just gloss over his two unnamed daughters that only get mentioned during the twist scandal to further "twist the knife" and are only physically present during Cole's funeral in the epilogue, barely visible
I can't think of a character like Roy Earle who I liked and hated at the same time.
Wait does this mean we getting LA Noire streams? Peak
On our next episode of the Black Yoshi Bionicle Chronicles, we head back to the 40s, a time when we were recovering from a second World War and everyone wore a suit and a fedora.
13:50 what did he mean by this
WHAT DID HE MEAN BY THIS?
I was not even close to interested in this video but this dude's spin on things are to funny to not binge watch all the videos just for the pure laughs.
The battle of the wills between Kelso and Mickey Cohen was so serious the modern L.A. still has visible burn marks
15:15 that caught me so off guard holy shit
"A man permanently afflicted by a bad case of Max Payne face". Has to be the funniest line I've ever heard in a video. And a very true statement 😂. If your to ever review Max Payne 1. I'd love a reference back to this but instead say he has a bad case of Stefan Bekowsky face😂
I love how you presented Kelso, hit the nail on the head.
I like how he even gave a shout-out to the game's soundtrack at the end. The main theme of the game was top notch, specially the redux version.
damn, last time you uploaded a video I had a family, a dog, a cat, a child and money, now all I have is mental illness and no home
Remember kids, Joe Barbaro would use that 10% offer.
He would use it to pay da fee for da BARBER!
This game hits especially hard living/working in LA. The city used to look so wildly different but really, not much has changed.
This game sat in my steam library for quite a few years, wasn't really expecting to like it much but it turned out to be a really good game. A good blend of serious and campy, the main story was decent but the mission n stories were great with some heavy subject matter in a few.
It's a good play, I highly recommend it.
1:11 favorite part
0:15 I can safely say yes to all of those I’m gonna submit my application now thanks for the recommendation
I’ve watched two reviews of yours and you immediately have me subbed. Your reviews are unbelievably in depth and tickle my funny bone in the right way.
The intro may be a slow burn, but Cole's men certainly burned very fast
WAW OST intensifies
Correction, the Okinawans burned really fast.
My fav part was when phelps said "it's cole'in time" and phelps'd all over the interrogation room

Harlon Fontaine is such a brilliantly evil villain, I love that smooth as gravy Colonel Sanders drawl.
I’ll never understand why it’s a open world when it could’ve just been a telltale game
The chemical explosion mission is actually based on a real event, O'Connor Plating Works disaster in 1947
We NEED an La Noire 2
My Monday is better because of this video
You didn’t talk about the Jazz music at the club best part of the soundtrack
I love youtube keeps recommending me channel like this. KEEP EM COMING DONT STOP
I loved this game despite how I was so bad at it I never got introduced to major parts of the story like how your vice partner and the CoP are corrupt or Valdez, I also don't remember your traffic or arson partner like at all, it's only Rusty the loveable fatty or the corrupt one.
9:30 TBH the Miranda Warning didn’t go into effect until 1966
Wow did you see the moment at 4:20 ? It was super crazy

"The incorrect response jingle"
WAIT WHAT???
I though that jingle was the "you gottem", like there's more than meets the eye.
RUclips subscriptions have done me dirty... THIS CAME OUT 3 WEEKS AGO?
The streams will be legendary. Nice video man.
Really loved this, keep coming back to it, wish you did more of a story synapsis but perfect vid nonetheless
Some times you gotta shake the tree to see what falls out.
I tried completing this game several times. I start it, fully invested, being very cautious, finding clues, etc. And then I just stop and play something else. Some times passes and I am like 'well, I haven't finishied it the last time, how about I start from the scratch, but do it properly this time from start to finish'. Then the same thing happes. And I actually like the game, but what's up with that
L.A Noire is to Video Games what The Third Man is to Cinema.
8:14 "IRL Roy Earle is not real
IRL Roy Earle cannot hurt you" 😂😂
thank you for this birthday present Joshi
I died on the snuggle with a struggle part like my dude came up with an unexpected rhyme
director : " show me your best material "
guy making the ambient interrogation song : * passes out on one key *
director : you son of a bitch, your in.
I want Joshi continue his YTP after this video
I know I sound crazy, but playing the game in black and white was super fun and I recommend it.
24:33 Those YTPs are pure Youtubian white gold. That's why.
There needs to be another game LA Noire.
Workin the Homicide Desk can be moydah...
Cheers dude!! One of the funniest summaries I've seen in a long time!!! Especially the intro to arson!!! 😂😂😂
“Patrol: Cole Phelps. Car. Gun”

I was just having a la noire nostalgia trip too!
9:45
*Iconic*
would be really cool if their was a game like this in modern times. maybe another one set in 80s or 90s.
One of my favorite games, thanks for making this video it was great and made me laugh
i accidentally read this in a french way and literally pronounced it as "La noire" lmaoo i aint even french
9:03 had me dying 😂😂😂
15:35 I fucking hate when people put these blink and you'll miss it captions in videos.
Me too
"The department owes me $50" *casually steals $1,000 worth of evidence* 15:34
If the game would start, yes.
I love how L.A Noir is coming back through memes :v
Snuggle with a struggle in that robotic voice got me good.
17:29 poor rusty got left behind😢
"They was workin' on the tires! that's all that was took!"
Black joshi is a humor genius
I am so glad YT algorithm decided to be based that one faithful day, and recommended one of your videos to me. Been following ever since, what a great find
