He starts in standard D. He's cheating a bit and using his pinky on the B string, 3rd fret, even though he is also fretting the B string on the second fret. He lifts the pinky to make DMaj7, which is the standard "A" chord pattern moved down one string. The he frets only the 2nd fret of E and G strings to make D6. Pretty clever.
