    I spent 6 years in a cloistered contemplative monastery. ( & another year in an active contemplative community). I have been living a retired hermit life for the last 10 years, had 2 years mentoring with a Benedictine Romauldian hermit. Getting into the monastic daily schedule of prayer & work, silence & solitude is transformative. The formation I received was life changing.

    I just love this. I spent two years as a monastic 50 years ago. I live as a hermit now but I still treasure my monastic memories.

      Good morning Hermit. Can you tell me more about why and how you came to distain human company? I can’t seem to find a niche with them anywhere i turn.

      @@LezleyChapotI love human company, especially that of my family and friends. Being a hermit does not mean that one is cut off from human interaction. Nevertheless, there is also a great need for silence and solitude in order to seek God and to pray for others. Being a hermit tends, as in my case, a call in the second half of life. My working life was very busy DOING but now I have time to just BE.

    St. Joseph’s Abbey is probably one of the best places I’ve been. I spent some time there 23 years ago during a difficult period in my life. The guidance I was able to get while I was there, plus the self-discovery, was worth the journey.
    Thank you for sharing this.

    Oh I wish I could go. I made a mistake when I was young when I decided not to join the nuns. Now I have responsibilities and I can't afford to go. I am trying to find ways to incorporate these ideas into my own life.

    Thank you very much for sharing with us this unique experience of the time you spent in this Abbey. I have enjoyed so much each one of your words and thoughts, every wondering and expression manifested here. They somehow brought me a precise impression of what being a contemplative monk must be, how they act in this world even in on a physically separated way. I shall watch this video other times to absorb better what Prof. Aaron has translated to us with great clarity. And I believe there must be much more going on inside his mind and "heart" than what could be expressed, in analogy to what has been mentioned about the book, "The Cloud of Unknowing". Thank you! Namastê! Sorry for my mistakes in English writing. Regina Fernandes from Brazil.

    Hey. Thanks for your experience.
    Can you recommend any books for someone considering the trappist vocation

    • @aarongodlaski939
      @aarongodlaski939  17 дней назад

      Definitely, keeping in mind that vocational discernment is a deeply personal search. You might check out Br. Paul Quinon's memoir, In Praise of a Useless Life; Henri Nouwen's, Discernment; Jean-Pierre de Caussade's, Abandonment to Divine Providence/Sacrament of the Present Moment; Evagrius Ponticus', Praktikos; or Huston's translation of The Cloud of Unknowing. If you haven't already you should contact, and if possible spend some time in, a Trappist monastery. Even if it's over a series of emails, this would allow you to open a dialogue and receive some spiritual direction in the matter. Communities are very open to beginning conversations with people interested in exploring The Life. They recognize it is a slow process and very few actually move forward into formation, so don't feel timid about reaching out. A willing uncertainty to enter into listening to how the Spirit can move us is part of the process. Blessings on your journey!

    Great video except the monks sing the Divine Office in English and not Latin. Hence, the background singing is not from Spencer.

    • @aarongodlaski939

      Sort of, except for the Salve three nights a week, benediction, and some occasions during mass, they do sing in English. The background music is an antiphon from a 1957 recording from Spencer Abbey, Festum Mariae Assumptae.

      @@aarongodlaski939knew it had to be before the Second Vatican Council in 1963 -1965 when Gregorian Chant/Plainchant was then sung in English.
      The Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) is beautiful when they sing it at Compline at night in Latin. Thanks for the 1957 info.
