- This is a rerelease of my original I Looked at You video. This version has a more accurate organ tone and notes.
I Looked At You was recorded sometime between August and December of 1966. It is the first Doors song to only include one keyboard, the Vox organ. Ray does not play the piano bass on this one as there is an actual bass guitar. Ray plays his Vox organ solo. The part is very easy, even the solo, yet it fits perfectly.
I must learn that. Thank you
I think you’re wrong with regards to the keyboard bass. I Looked At You was one of the first songs recorded for the album. The bass guitar overdubs came later. The bass player did not play with the band in the studio for this album. Ray must have played keyboard bass as he did on all the other tracks. Perhaps it was mixed out similar to how it was done on Soul Kitchen. For that song, you only hear the keyboard bass on the intro but it drops out once the bass guitar kicks in. However, we know Ray played keyboard bass on the entire track because you can hear it on the 40th anniversary remix. Anyway, I think we would all love to hear I Looked at You without the overdub, as it was played in the studio. I always believed you could hear a trace of the keyboard bass on the recording. It just sounds muddy and difficult to discern from the overdub. You need to get someone skilled with DES to extract the part.
@@maxincountrywerks I was struggling with this video as I was not able to settle on wether there was indeed a keyboard bass. I think your points have persuaded me though. The only problem is that I can’t hear anything at all so you’re right, I need a really good isolation. If I get it somewhere down the road, I will redo this one.
