  • In this video, I discuss the details involved in repelling a knight sacrifice on g5 that Black often faces in various Italian and Spanish setups. I use the game Praggnanandhaa - Mishra from Biel as an example. I talk about general principles to look out for, as well as showing a lot of crazy tactical ideas.

Great lecture, because so many games have a bishop pinning a knight early.

Great content as always! I play the giocco piano and it is interesting to understand the ideas from the defending side.

This is an interesting topic. I've definitely found myself on the black side of this sort of position before, but I don't think I've ever seen any educational material so specifically focused on it. Although honestly going through the moves here kind of just made it seem impossible to calculate precisely (seemingly even for the best in the world, given the example)! But the broader takeaway points at the end are helpful.

I would always want to avoid playing g5. Or prepare it as safely as possible. Im playing at 1800 or so, so its never worked out defensively for me. No surprise. Useful topic.
