You know, I think the most terrifying part is not even the fact this game could erase your entire existence. In my opinion, even scarier is the possibility you could... remain stuck. Like, stuck, maybe for all of eternity... or until your physical body dies of hunger or dehydratation. For both players to come back, someone need to finish the game... but if either player is unable to, then both players are in trouble. Because you need someone else to relay you but it's likely nobody remembers you at this point. No one will come to your help.
In a sense, this is even more horrible for the winning player. Sora's consciousness was floating, so he may not have felt as much, but Kurami and Fiel were still there with more consciousness. Stuck. With zero certitude than anything or anyone would come to help them. I don't know what is more scary between completely losing your sense of self, or being in the winning position but being completely helpless since you cannot continue the game.

it definitely was a huge gamble but at least Sora had a plan/strategy going into it. He knew how to win which is something that gave what remained of his mind something to focus on at the end at least

Hey Flugel! Can I read the LN from Vol 4 after the anime, or is it really necessary to restart from the beginning?

You should be able to continue right from Volume 4. Just be aware that the ending of the anime where they encounter Rank 1, the Old Deus doesn't happen till Volume 6. Instead Sora and Shiro stay in the Eastern Federation to enjoy the animal girl paradise for a bit. Volume 4 continues from there
