- Soft skills are thought to be unmeasurable, unteachable, and unimportant. This presentation will challenge each of these assumptions. From the Ancient Greeks to today’s leaders, the evidence is clear that these skills are not so soft after all. They are essential to living a good life, creating a good community, and having meaningful employment.
Dr. Andy Wible is an instructor of philosophy and is currently chair of the Arts and Humanities Department at Muskegon Community College. Andy received his Ph.D. from Wayne State University. He writes and teaches mainly in business and biomedical ethics, and LGBTQ issues, and is active in his community.

His voice is very clear and well-paced in speech. No gimmicks. Wish I could find more of that style because it brings more focus to the content rather than the speaker. The problem for me is his emphasis on ancient philosophical theories. Please, can we have newer theories

Was it just me or was he rambling on about the importance of these skills and not in how to cultivate them into our lives?
God no I finally got 8 minutes in and wondered if this guy was ever gonna get to the point. Philosophy majors.
He rambled a bit, and basically said things in an indirect way. Would not call it a TED talk...

I am a new to customer service industry. I am not good at soft skill. That is why I am here.😅
It was very interesting because he depicted the exact definition of what soft skills are not. He definitely knew and fully appreciates the value of them.... but not how to deliver or develop them. In the beginning I actually thought the flat cap and glasses where going to be part of an act and then change and reflect back on the audiences interaction with them...clearly my soft skills of reading the presenter need significant improvement...... :-)

Tbh, being a socially awkward guy who is often noticed for being socially awkward rather than as someone who is able enough to learn new stuff and enjoys learning. I think the importance of soft skills are being emphasised much more than hard/technical skills in this day and age.
I am watching the video as I comment, but I think we need a balance between soft and hard skills. I have noticed who people who have really good people skills but don't seem academic, I know this isn't always the case, are highly liked. Despite soft skills being important if we just focus on soft skills, will we end up not reaching the full potential when it comes to the technical aspect of how a company operates?
As a former socially akward girl I can give you an advise that may help you. I'm an engineer and I sense this kind of practicality in your words, and you made a good point .... whom deserves best the job? a nice likable guy or a most "academic" guy?
I think that the smartest guy should have the job. Unfortunately in a job interview the "nice guy" can expose more capabilities and intelligence, soft skills are that: aplied intelligence.
Meanwhile the academic introvert guy need that the employer believes in his resume, as he is not really showing in that momment his intelligence.
For me it worked visualizing this as types of intelligence, and that I have to work as hard for the soft skills that as I work for my hard skills.
Later I undertood that i actually need to enfatize my learning into soft skills, like communication, as I was very bad at it.
Now, i'm a different person.
The ultimate goal for me is simple: be more intelligent than yesterday .

Thanks for this. Totally agree about the name. You can take soft skills with you; they are always in demand, especially by hiring managers and especially now. WSJ, Forbes, and others emphasize them above hard skills. Thinking about doing a video on what they are, with examples.

Surely being engaging when giving a talk is a soft skill...why not use it? Role-model what you’re talking about!
Telling us what soft skulls are and the history doesn't help us improve. How do we develop these soft skills?
If you’re a parent, it is easy knowing that you are your children’s soft skills coach. We seize opportunity every day to develop them… For toddlers, it’s through PLAY. Allow them explore playing on their own and watch how they develop PROBLEM SOLVING which is a soft skill. Watch them serve things and expect returns. As their words grow, engage them in conversations to develop their COMMUNICATION skills. Let them write a lot as well. Ask them a lot of questions but the questions should be Open-ended questions so they can talk more. Avoid closed questions which are questions that demand either just a ‘Yes’ or a ‘No’. This will help their CRITICAL THINKING. As they eat, teach them FINE DINING… It means you have to learn it so you can help them develop it gradually. Seize moments to teach them to RESPECT others at home so they can extend GOOD MANNERS outside as well. I hope this has helped a bit.
