Cheeba Greene I am from and live in D.C. His rent would be at least $2k for just a studio. Northern Virginia, D.C., and Maryland would all yield the same result for housing. I use to pay over $3k to rent in D.C. and that was 4 years ago. Oh, and prices continue to rise in D.C... I'm pretty sure the guy did the math, he doesn't seem stupid.
He says family is the most important thing. Did he ever consider how many hours a year he is away from his family by commuting? Get another job or move your family there.
Erik Högman only 3.5 hours a day .you don't count waking up at 4 or his time he is at work.if he gets there at 7:30 ,then works 8 hours I'm assuming.maybe he gets off around 5:00. add 3.5 hours he'll be home for dinner .but will probably miss a lot off his kids events.my mom took off for my events idk if he does.just because a man sacrifices family time for work doesn't mean its less important.its what most parents do.
Erik Högman Bingo !! Dept. of defense job or not, I used to drive 100 miles each way, 4x a week in northern NY..and between the waste of time, fatigue and overall vehicle wear..no amount of money is worth it ..the guy is dumb and unless there was NO other job to be had, you wouldn't catch me ever doing that kind of commute again. No amount of money is worth it!! I'm sure he could find something in VA that pays "twice" what his original job paid .. and he wouldn't be spreading himself too thin on a BS commute. Can't believe this is even news.
It means a lot when you have a family to support. He's clearly not just thinking of himself. He uses his weekends to get the time back with his family that he loses during the week.. 90% of working men do that.
I don’t know... He “appears” to be happy to me. After all, it was mentioned that this is his dream job. So, you’re right in some ways - it’s not just about the money. You don’t stay doing such an extreme commute for 12 years if you don’t get enjoyment out of your work. Plus like the other person said, he clearly makes up for the lost family time during the week on the weekends.
Once you factor in all his time and wear and tear commuting he is making no where near 3 times the amount he use to make ,time is money this just doesn't make any sense
bbsp totally bs, considering he only drives from Chesterfield to Fredericksburg, which is a perfectly normal commute. I think they were just joking about getting oil changed every two weeks.
It’s simple. The answer: You don’t just drive to work! Even for a super commuter like him with limited time, you still have chores and other things to do on your time off or after work that usually requires driving. It might not seem like it but those miles add up.
My dad used to work on the other side of the country here in the Netherlands. Roundtrip he also did 220 miles a day. His car used to run on natural gas because that’s way cheaper here in Holland, but that meant he had to fill up every day on his way home.
I guess no body told this guy he could just rent an apartment in DC for the weekdays and go home to Richmond on the weekends like mostly everyone in DC does lmao
+phillieG lets say, for sake of argument, this man works 49 weeks out of 52 weeks/year; 3 weeks missing accounted for vacation/holidays. That leaves this man commuting 245 days/year (49 x 5, not including weekends) at 220 miles/day of commute. At year end, if commuting 245 days/year while at a constant range of 220 miles, you would put 53,900 miles on your vehicles; running straight through the standard 4yr/36,000 mile year lease in less than a year, meaning he owns the vehicle he commutes and bares the cost of all repairs, which are indeed plentiful when going such an excessive amount of miles in a single year. We could also add such things as gasoline into the equation, if he's driving 53,900 miles/yr and his car has a decent fuel efficiency of 25mpg, that would mean he's purchasing 2,120 gallons of gasoline/year; average price of VA gasoline listed as $2.15, meaning for his commute he spends $4,558/yr on gasoline.
I totally agree with you lol - nice calculations - my respect for that. First thing, I would not suggest taking a job that is that far away. My old coworkers use to commute 4 hrs a day from Fredericksburg to Northern VA, which was absurd. So I think it's stupid overall for the mere fact, in order to live in the Richmond area and keep his lifestyle, he doesn't need 3 times the pay - he probably really only needed 1.5 times more pay to see a boost in his lifestyle or for whatever his reasons for wanting more money is. That 3 times more pay is for people who live in the DMV because the cost of living is so high. So he effectively is trying to take that money back to RIC, but in the midst of that, he is killing himself slowly with this ridiculous commute. All and all, it is a stupid idea because his cost of living does not require 3 times the pay. But to each their own, I guess...
I havent done any research on this, but intuition tells me that there HAS TO be a way for him to organize a place to stay from Monday night to (including) Thursday night every week which is only about an hours commute away from his job. Even a hotel, just a basic one to sleep, wash, keep his clothes in good shape, should be feasible - surely you could strike a good deal when youre staying 4 nights a week, every week. What hes doing might be acceptable very temporarily, but in the long run that sort of commuting will (most of all) take a huge toll on his health and his family. In addition to the fact that this commute is a financial death trap. Nevertheless, this mans determination is outstanding!
My commute is 44 miles one way and take nearly that amount of time. It varies from 2 to 3 hours one way on average. While I don't transfer as many times as this guy. I feel his pain. It's kind of a bitter sweet feeling. To have the opportunity is amazing but the commute makes me regularly wonder if it's worth it at all.
My mother did this for 15 years. She was a social worker in the VA in DC. She left her job and transfer to SC got a year then opened a successful daycare business for 10 years, you do what you gotta do for family and income.
It might seem crazy to most people; but when you love what you do, it isn't out of the way at all. My daily commute is similar to his, but not quite as long and I don't have to ride a train or car pool at all. My commute is around 170 miles one way, which takes a little over three hours to drive; so my daily commute is around 340 miles which takes about six and a half hours total.
I lived in Richmond for a long time and there are quite a few people do that. My dad used to commute to Newport News from Williamsburg and then Richmond when we moved there. He did it for many years, 20 or so. All to be able to support his family the way he felt like he should, driving to a better paying employer. He listened to a lot of book on tape, before online stuff even. This was the 1980-2000.
So wait, dude wakes up at 4, takes him 3 and a half hours just to get to his job, then takes him 3 and a half hours to get home after work. And he's basically gonna have to go to bed soon after he gets home just to get a decent night of sleep. Where does the family fit in during the week then? That doesn't make any sense to me
Joel Smith it seems terrible and his is but it took me as much as 2 hrs to get home from my last job and I lived 25 min away (without traffic). Still tho this guy should move.
What I'm not understanding is the part where it says he drives 80 miles before he get's in with someone else. So if he's doing that every day it's only 160 miles..800 a week. Two weeks equates to 1600 miles. Really that isn't bad. Either is the 3,200 miles a month really.. lol It would be different if he were driving the entire 220 miles a day. Then I could understand MAYBE. He needs to get himself a more suitable oil. lol Some type of good synthetic. lmao
oil change every two weeks. Am I the only one calling b.s on this. First off he doesnt drive the whole way himself. he takes 2 trains, catches a ride with a friend. For him to do oil change every 2 week he would have to drive at least 3000k. which he isnt even close to getting every 2 weeks even if he drives there all the way.
I have to wonder if he's still doing this or has it finally taken it's toll. 7 hours is nearly a second full time job. A job that in itself does not pay a single cent.
hes flushing 7 hours a day down the toilet. at DC minimum wage over the course of a year that is over $22k. Either move there or get another job. This isn't an amazing story of how much a man who loves his family: this is an amazing story of how poorly someone can manage their own life.
Daniel Gastelum I still think taking a 20 dollar bus ride, where you can sleep and have wifi. Is better than being stressed out and taking a car ride, a ride with a friend and then a train.
My dad also had this commute for the last 5 years of his career and retired from the FED after 31 years with the Gov. he’s happily retired now and vacationing and taking trips with my mom.
This is outrageous, and nothing to celebrate. HE talks about family, but he doesn't even see his family during the week. Up at 4 - home by 9/10pm? JUST MOVE TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF DC or MD!!!!
Bro, you should rent a room in DC and come home for the weekends. It doesn't make much difference being physically home if you have no time to rest and be with your loved ones
That's 35 hours a week gone. GONE For just traveling....literally losing a day and half of your life each week. That's over 75 full days gone each year....actually since we're usually only awake for 16 hours each day, that really adds up to 110 "awake" days gone year....
@@AdamFrancisco perhaps you could then guide this poor man in this video towards your line of work.It will be a blessing for this familyman forced to commute seven hours a day.

That's dedication I see people saying stay out in DC All week They must not have kids. This man goes out and grinds and seems to hold it together Don't knock it
And this morning I was upset because people were not following the 4 way stop sign correctly on my 7 min drive to my kids school. This video has hit the nerve today. Thank you lord for the life you have given us. #iamgreatful
DEERY PRODUCTIONS Oh no...it's possible...I do it.. about 140 miles each day driving. How can I do it? I just talk to myself in my car in the morning... Then in the evening I listen to music.. Been doing it for about 14 months. I live in Utah so I also have to drive through the snow and elevations in my 92 Honda Civic....yup..a 25 year old car. My Civic has not failed me since, because God has not failed me since.😃
It is, my GF's brother does this exact trip this guy takes, but even further from chesterfield to DC. He wakes up around 3AM and leaves to arrive at his job that's @7AM. He used to drive daily, but after months he started to realize he was putting insane mileage on his car, plus he was tired, he would literally get off at 4PM, get home at 7-8PM, and go to sleep an HR or two later, he owns a dodge charger so gas isn't cheap either, so he rented an apartment and comes home to his family on the weekends.
I'm doing 98mi each direction, 5 days/week, it isn't exactly 200 mi a day but lemme tell ya, sometimes your lifestyle trumps commute time. This isn't going to be sustainable for more than a year, but having a plan in-place may decrease that timeline even further.
So. He's basically spending a whole work day to work a whole work day to make the amount of money he could probably make at a job closer to home if puts in OT. Makes perfect sense.
It doesn't really add up to me how it takes 3 and 1/2 half hours to travel approximately 110 miles. Maybe 2 hours tops. And at $2.50 currently with gas prices that would only cost $7,200 a year in fuel costs. Then again I don't know how much he's being paid.
People in the comments are mean. It's sounds like most of y'all are jealous because your too damn lazy. Plus he probably needs to make more money to move closer. If you didn't know, property gets expensive when you get closer to D.C. And a family of his size is is gonna very expensive large house.
Comments on here are disgusting. I can definitely tell this man is way happier than any of you calling him stupid for what he does. Even though his commute is as long as it is if it makes him happy to do it that's all that matters.
Something ain't right about this story. Does he care about his health? It would probably be more cost effective to: 1. Rent a studio outside DC to stay on weekdays and travel home on weekends. 2. Have the wife quit her job (since he's making 3 times his previous salary), sell the house and move a bit closer. He can't tell me he's commuting because of the neighbors and uncles and friends. That's not very bright. 3. If he can't move, he should not have taken the job. It's not worth his health since he's got no time to sleep or even see his family. ...what do I know? Maybe it's all worth it or he just doing it to have a 'good' story to tell on CBS
Seems like a good guy. I get that he doesn't want to uproot his family. I'm a dad, too. I have a friend who - for various reasons - can't leave Austin, but needs to work in Dallas. He goes up on Monday morning, then returns Thursday afternoon. Stays in an airbnb M-W. Works at home on Friday. Staying in a spare bedroom can't be much more money than all that travel and mileage. Plus, you are risking your health with that commute.
I live in Richmond, and stories like this aren't all that uncommon - many people don't like the population density and intensity of living in or around D.C.
What a waste of your life 24 hours in a day 7 hour commute, and 8 hour work day, 5 hours of sleep, 4 hours to live everyday. you have spent 1/3 of your year commuting, 1/3 Working and 1/3 between sleep and living?? in the 15 years of living you spent 3- 4 of those years having free time. I don't know if to feel bad for him or laught.
It would be a lot smarter to just get an apartment in DC and come home on the weekends. Maybe work out a deal to work 4 days per weeks (10 hours per day). Got to respect his love for his family. I do wonder how much of that raise is eaten up by the cost of commuting (especially wearing out his car so quickly).
Why not stay in DC Mon-Fri and home on weekends?
It's expensive to live in DC.
Truckers do it

Dad: No I have to travel 7 hrs to get to work. Maybe when I retire
twin falls LOL
🤣💀
if he doesn't want to move closer, just rent a room or extended stay motel. with gas/oil change/wear & tear and time saved it will pay for itself.
It takes a 2.5 hours to drive from Richmond to DC. I think 7 hours is a bit of an exaggeration
This makes almost no sense.
Excellent Determination and Commitment for his Family to live at peace!!!!!
True results is EFFORT and Not Complaining and not trying
That's dedication
I see people saying stay out in DC All week
They must not have kids.
This man goes out and grinds and seems to hold it together
Don't knock it
Not the best choice but God bless this man!
he don't have to travel that far for his dream job. he could just move closer.
I know someone who actually drives 6 hours round trip everyday for work. Don't see him without a cigarette or cup of coffee in his hand.
When your hot co-worker says she's on break alone......
And this morning I was upset because people were not following the 4 way stop sign correctly on my 7 min drive to my kids school. This video has hit the nerve today. Thank you lord for the life you have given us. #iamgreatful
There is literally no way he can do this everyday consistently
DEERY PRODUCTIONS
Oh no...it's possible...I do it.. about 140 miles each day driving.
How can I do it?
I just talk to myself in my car in the morning...
Then in the evening I listen to music..
Been doing it for about 14 months.
I live in Utah so I also have to drive through the snow and elevations in my 92 Honda Civic....yup..a 25 year old car.
My Civic has not failed me since, because God has not failed me since.😃
jbentley8383 AMEN!🙏🏽 commute safely.
Except that, at the time of this broadcast, he had been doing it every day for over a decade.
So he basically is working 2 full time jobs (8 hr at dc job plus 7 hr communte a day) but making 3x the salary?
So. He's basically spending a whole work day to work a whole work day to make the amount of money he could probably make at a job closer to home if puts in OT.
Makes perfect sense.
"Oh damn, forgot my suitcase at the office"
And I thought my 75mile drive was rough.
It doesn't really add up to me how it takes 3 and 1/2 half hours to travel approximately 110 miles. Maybe 2 hours tops. And at $2.50 currently with gas prices that would only cost $7,200 a year in fuel costs. Then again I don't know how much he's being paid.
Jonathon Haug Try to take i95 into Washington DC during rush hour, and you'll understand why it takes 3 hours
This isn't Kansas - he's commuting into DC.
oldtwins na but Kansas has hella traffic too going to downtown KC during rush hour
People in the comments are mean. It's sounds like most of y'all are jealous because your too damn lazy. Plus he probably needs to make more money to move closer. If you didn't know, property gets expensive when you get closer to D.C. And a family of his size is is gonna very expensive large house.
Clorox Bleach best comment
Comments on here are disgusting. I can definitely tell this man is way happier than any of you calling him stupid for what he does. Even though his commute is as long as it is if it makes him happy to do it that's all that matters.
this guy needs to telecommute.
His wife is cheating on him...
That's fcking dedication, you know he either doesn't mind the commute or really hates his last job.
Something ain't right about this story.
Does he care about his health?
It would probably be more cost effective to:
A black man who is a dad. That's good to see.
Yes, it really is.
Haha
Funny guy
cameron james wtf 😂😂tf u talking about
Ryan google slavery buddy .. im white .. and i repent
He's one of two things:
The most kickass and dedicated American in history
or
A stubborn idiot who needs to move closer to his job
Both
gotta love the chemistry between him and the interviewer. defintiely a funny bunch.
He should get a private pilots licence. He might actually save money.
Awesome family man!
Lot's of time missed he could've spent with his family if he just moved like any rational person would do.
That reporter had a bad case of the giggles 😂
He's happy though. You can't do this and be miserable.
might as well invest in a small plane
They really can't just move closer to where he works? Spending nearly 1/2 of your waking life commuting is absolutely no way to live
Damn I commute 140 miles a day but this guy is something.
I traveled for a summer class. For 2 months I drove 350 mile 6 hour round trip, it was twice a week, thou. I actually enjoyed most of it.
I cringed so hard seeing that family dance
bashbarti . Probably. Look at the way they dance. I've never seen them dance like that.
bashbarti If they were white it would still be cringey. Stop using the race card you donkey
Raul Veizaga, It's his dream job, how about thinking of the positive instead of knocking the man ffs.
Hard worker! He's an awesome family man and great guy, I can just tell
My uncle commuted (drove the entire way) 235 miles round trip a day for almost 20 years. He put 500,000 miles on a couple of trucks.
BEAUTIFUL Family is a necessity
For the employer to even allow this is pretty messed up. They should have offered a place for his family to live closer. This is outrageous
Richmond to D.C. Is literally like 2 hours max
Yonis Linares That's if you take the HOT lanes.
Anyone else disturbed by their dancing? Good lord have mercy.
God bless him and his family 💛💛
