I'm with Amber, I like this one way better than Rhinestone Cowboy. This is beautiful song and for some reason, every time I hear it, it makes me cry like a baby. Just about a guy working and missing his wife. Very simple but beautiful. And that IS him playing the guitar, he's one of the best guitarists ever.
I always thought Rhinestone Cowboy was sort of a gimmicky song. Not that I didn't love it, because I did. But this song, it's just a beautiful moving song. Maybe from a female standpoint more than from a male standpoint. Just to know that someone is thinking of you and missing you and all they want to do is get back to you. That's a beautiful and romantic thought.
Yep, i agree. He did "beautiful melancholy" so very well... this one, Where's the Playground Susie, Galveston, By the Time I Get to Phoenix (and even Rhinestone Cowboy) are perfect examples. More up-tempo fun stuff - my favourites of his are Bonaparte's Retreat and Southern Nights.

Actually Jimmy Webb does two beautiful versions of his song on two different albums both are wonderful. One is on Ten Easy Pieces (1996) and the other is on Just Across The River (2010)

Glen Campbell is an American treasure. You need "Gentle On My Mind" or "By The Time I Get To Phoenix." For his amazing guitar skills, check out "Going Back To Indiana." And yes, God bless and keep our linemen. I live in Florida hurricane country, and whenever there's a storm, you see not only local linemen from the local power/phone companies, you see trucks and workers from hundreds of miles around. And they will do what it takes to get the power be on, weather be damned. They are such unsung heroes.

Thank you Amber.... I was a lineman for the local phone company, averaging 300+ hours a year of OT for 30 years, Outages, storm damage and just wear and tear kept me from a lot of family events. The money was decent, but I missed out on a lot of family time. Now with creaky knees, hips and shoulders, I appreciate your mention of respect for the ones that keep the power on and (back then) the phone lines going!
@@MrDaiseymay depends on where you are I believe, it’s a vast country so infrastructure can vary greatly and take a much longer time to change in some areas. Though from what I’ve seen multiple other countries take an absolute eternity to do stuff that happens super fast in america so maybe it depends on the thing and specific area maybe.

The string arrangement on Wichita Lineman are absolutely superb. The writing and arranging in those days were untouchable. Carol Kaye (on bass) was one of the very first women to make a proper career recording as a backing musician in popular music with “The Wrecking Crew”, the same bunch of session musicians that Glenn Campbell started with!
Thanks for that, I didn't know about Carol Kaye And as for the orchestral arrangement, second to none. When I first heard it in the 1970's, I went out and bought it and played it daily.
It interesting you give the string arrangement top billing for the song, I think the strings are the one drawback. Nothing wrong with the notes or arrangement per se, I guess my beef is just with the final mix, they're just way too loud, too prominent. They distract in places, but I've noticed that's a periodic thing, several songs of the time feature the overblown strings (to me anyways).

I’ll add to the list three lesser known from him - his cover of The Impossible Dream, If You Go Away & Dreams of the Everyday Housewife. (& one more - there’s so many- True Grit). This is one of my very favorite songs; unlike most songs, it never gets old and I never get tired of hearing it. Haunting. Great arrangement. (The bass in this song is the legendary Carol Kaye of the Wrecking Crew.)

Glenn Campbell was in the wrecking crew and friends with Carol. He could have done the bass himself (he played bass for the Beach Boys when he filled in for Brian Wilson) but Carol is one in a billion.
My Dad was a lineman for 40 years! This song has always plucked my heart strings. I still have a lot of his gear! He passed away from dementia 2 years...now it really hits me!

This how my dad died, he was a lineman and was electricuted when I was 8 years. So these guys really are one shock away. Whenever I hear this song I cry, it is so beautiful and well done.
There's a video from a show that was on TMT that a random group of musicians get together and sing and play. The show he was on really shows his playing.

This song was written by Jimmy Webb, who wrote several other songs that Campbell recorded, including a song called "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", which I personally happen to know better as a Linda Ronstadt song.
Jimmy Webb is simply one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Art Garfunkel loved him. His Watermark album -- except for two songs --is entirely made up of Jimmy Webb tunes. Also, check out Jimmy Webb's, the Animals' Christmas, a Nativity cantata performed by Garfunkel, Amy Grant, and a children's choir. It's a stunning piece; one of my favorite Christmas albums.
It's kind of funny that Webb let Linda Ronstadt record one of his songs, as the genesis for both "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Macarthur Park" was that his girlfriend Susan Horton had fallen in love with Ronstadt's cousin, Bobby. I guess he got over it…eventually. (Maybe he "found that recipe again", after all?)

I’m 68, and Glen is still my go to when driving the car, or sat at home with my wife who also loves him. I can remember when this song came out in the UK, and listening to it on radio Luxembourg. The reception on my portable was awful but I found one spot in the house, halfway up a bedroom wall where the reception was good. I spent many hours trying to catch this song, and my parents thought I’d gone a bit mad. I loved it/him then and I love even more to this day. ❤️
I’m old enough to vividly remember his prime when this came out. As a veteran, I especially like “Galveston” - his “Vietnam” song. I’ve been where he was in that song. Hearing it still drops me into that place instantly. Please give it a listen.

This is the most beautiful song..ever. The melody, lyrics and Glen's perfect vocals. I get choked up every time I hear it. Reminds me of my childhood too.
Glen was an EXCELLENT musician- he was a member of The Wrecking Crew- the group of session players that recorded the vast majority of all the hits of the 60s. He toured as a member of The Beach Boys when Brian Wilson stopped going on the road. Towards the later years he was a close friend and golfing buddy of Alice Cooper here in Phoenix! His daughter Ashley is an amazing musician as well- she plays the banjo and she's almost as talented as her dad. Glen was known for being able to hear a piece of music one time and then immediately being able to play it perfectly even though he never learned to read music!
He plays the solo on six string bass, probably a Fender VI bass. It is tuned like a guitar but octave lower. Nowadays it is often mistaken as barytone guitar but it isn't all though it can be tuned in that way too, using lighter strings than bass strings are.
And of course one of the fellow Wrecking Crew members was James Burton, Elvis' lead guitarist and session player in his touring years. James put banjo strings on his guitar to get a different sound and was voted #19 best player of all time in Rolling Stone magazine.

My father was a friend of Glen Campbell and grew up in Arkansas near his family. Glen is an awesome singer as he was a decent actor also. My father was from Piggott, Arkansas and was also friends with Glen. They sometimes shared the stage together at the Palomino Club in the early sixties. It was THE country western club in it's day in North Hollywood, CA.
You gotta check out “Galveston” and “Southern Nights”. My hometown legend, Carl Jackson, was Glen’s banjo player. You can hear some of Carl’s awesome banjo picking on “Southern Nights”, it blows “Rhinestone Cowboy” out of the water.
Although one of my favs of his, followed by “Galveston” and “Dreams of The Everyday Housewife”, his most poignant, heartbreaking song is his last, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” that he recorded as he declined into Alzheimer’s. I highly recommend it. Glen continued to perform well into the depths of dementia, astounding fans as well as others with his ability to continue to play complicated guitar passages while simultaneously losing his life time memories and other mental faculties. The video of “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” that you should react to is the one that appears in the documentary of his battle with Alzheimer’s, called Glen Campbell: I’ll be Me.

My grandfather was a lineman as well as a WW II Vet. He passed soon after I was born so I don't remember him, but when I here this song it brings tears to my eyes.

I honestly think the best way to get a feel for Glen's ability as an entertainer is live videos. My favorite is actually an instrumental. Glen and Roy Clark playing Ghost Riders in the Sky.
Roy was crazy good and played several stringed instruments. There is a video of Roy and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown playing a swinging version of Take The A-Train. Roy is ad libbing some licks near the end and does something I’d never seen anyone do before (and only once since). After hitting the highest notes you can on a guitar he then deliberately detunes his guitar mid-song to hit notes lower than a guitar can normally hit! That takes skill and supreme confidence. I'm with you girl. This is the song. Like yours, my dad was also lineman. As a child we attended far too many funerals for friends, young in their 30's, who caught a few stray, angry electrons. This song nails it. An amazing thing about Glen is just how many dozens and dozens of recordings, rock, pop, country, soul, etc. he played lead guitar anonymously as a member of the Wrecking Crew.

This song breaks your heart. The back up musicians are the "wrecking crew" which are the best session musicians of the 60s/70s. I grew up with this song and never realized how much it affected me until I was older....and now it seriously brings tears every time I hear it. This song is a masterpiece.

I've been listening to and loving this since it was new and you are right Amber, it's my favorite Glen Campbell song. And special thanks too for your shout out to the linemen and others who risk their lives unseen and unsung just so we can live ordinary lives. (Merchant sailors being another group. The men on the Edmund Fitzgerald were among the hundreds of thousands who lost their lives in that trade.) You kids are doing a good job.

"rhinestone cowboy" is a up beat fun song, but for true emotional melancholy depth and beauty you can't beat the first 3 I made mention... by the way, glen campbell is my personal favorite male country singer of all time..

Ha. Maybe because I'm female, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" just makes me mad. No sympathy here for a man ditching a woman (there's not enough evidence in the song that she's some kind of psychopath🤣). "Wichita Lineman," on the other hand, has a haunting melody, chord structure, and accompaniment (I really love Jimmy Webb's piano interpretation of his song), and the image of a hard-working, faithful, "ordinary" man with "extraordinary" thoughts is so compelling. This song was popular on the radio when I was in my teens. At the time, my buddies and I thought Glen Campbell was a bit cheesy and a bit too much mainstream pop, and for older folks, like our parents. It wasn't until just recently that I discovered what a phenomenal guitarist Glen Campbell actually is! There are at least a few modern musicians, including metal guitarists, who said that they would have loved to take guitar lessons from Glen Campbell. One of the world's Great guitarists, for sure.

The orchestra with a full string section really shows how much this song was backed and supported. Cambell's voice is always as smooth, comforting and his guitar work was as it always was, smooth, full and perfectly adapted for the style and tone that are the very essence of what the song is and still is. This is one of the greatest songs ever written! And sung by one of the greatest singers. In fact, Jimmy Webb wrote this song specifically for Glen to sing! It's not really a country song in the traditional sense, It's a Country-pop crossover, which Glen himself did a lot of crossover stuff. An amazing talent! And yes, Amber, his voice was clear as spring water and smooth as honey!. One other fun fact that you two may not know, Glen was a long time veteran in the Music Biz, He was one of the original Wrecking Crew studio Musicians out on the west coast. He played guitar in a lot of famous people's songs over the years. We are talking Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and the list goes on.
Glen taught himself how to play guitar. He just had a natural feel for it. He became one of the best players ever. I'd say Southern Nights is his best song. He was so popular in the late 60s, that he had his own variety show on TV.

They are wonderful songs. I bought his last CD "Ghost on the Canvas", beautiful & is a tribute to those who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

I always thought Rhinestone Cowboy was sort of a gimmicky song. Not that I didn't love it, because I did. But this song, it's just a beautiful moving song. Maybe from a female standpoint more than from a male standpoint. Just to know that someone is thinking of you and missing you and all they want to do is get back to you. That's a beautiful and romantic thought.
Yep, i agree. He did "beautiful melancholy" so very well... this one, Where's the Playground Susie, Galveston, By the Time I Get to Phoenix (and even Rhinestone Cowboy) are perfect examples. More up-tempo fun stuff - my favourites of his are Bonaparte's Retreat and Southern Nights.

Thank you Amber.... I was a lineman for the local phone company, averaging 300+ hours a year of OT for 30 years, Outages, storm damage and just wear and tear kept me from a lot of family events. The money was decent, but I missed out on a lot of family time. Now with creaky knees, hips and shoulders, I appreciate your mention of respect for the ones that keep the power on and (back then) the phone lines going!

@@MrDaiseymay depends on where you are I believe, it’s a vast country so infrastructure can vary greatly and take a much longer time to change in some areas. Though from what I’ve seen multiple other countries take an absolute eternity to do stuff that happens super fast in america so maybe it depends on the thing and specific area maybe.

The string arrangement on Wichita Lineman are absolutely superb. The writing and arranging in those days were untouchable. Carol Kaye (on bass) was one of the very first women to make a proper career recording as a backing musician in popular music with “The Wrecking Crew”, the same bunch of session musicians that Glenn Campbell started with!

It interesting you give the string arrangement top billing for the song, I think the strings are the one drawback. Nothing wrong with the notes or arrangement per se, I guess my beef is just with the final mix, they're just way too loud, too prominent. They distract in places, but I've noticed that's a periodic thing, several songs of the time feature the overblown strings (to me anyways).

My Dad was a lineman for 40 years! This song has always plucked my heart strings. I still have a lot of his gear! He passed away from dementia 2 years...now it really hits me!

This song was written by Jimmy Webb, who wrote several other songs that Campbell recorded, including a song called "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", which I personally happen to know better as a Linda Ronstadt song.
Judy Collins did a great recording of The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.
He also wrote "MacArthur Park", a hit for both Richard Harris and Donna Summer.
Jimmy Webb is simply one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Art Garfunkel loved him. His Watermark album -- except for two songs --is entirely made up of Jimmy Webb tunes. Also, check out Jimmy Webb's, the Animals' Christmas, a Nativity cantata performed by Garfunkel, Amy Grant, and a children's choir. It's a stunning piece; one of my favorite Christmas albums.

I’m 68, and Glen is still my go to when driving the car, or sat at home with my wife who also loves him. I can remember when this song came out in the UK, and listening to it on radio Luxembourg. The reception on my portable was awful but I found one spot in the house, halfway up a bedroom wall where the reception was good. I spent many hours trying to catch this song, and my parents thought I’d gone a bit mad. I loved it/him then and I love even more to this day. ❤️
I’m old enough to vividly remember his prime when this came out. As a veteran, I especially like “Galveston” - his “Vietnam” song. I’ve been where he was in that song. Hearing it still drops me into that place instantly. Please give it a listen.

Glen was an EXCELLENT musician- he was a member of The Wrecking Crew- the group of session players that recorded the vast majority of all the hits of the 60s. He toured as a member of The Beach Boys when Brian Wilson stopped going on the road. Towards the later years he was a close friend and golfing buddy of Alice Cooper here in Phoenix! His daughter Ashley is an amazing musician as well- she plays the banjo and she's almost as talented as her dad. Glen was known for being able to hear a piece of music one time and then immediately being able to play it perfectly even though he never learned to read music!

He was great Eddie Van Halen asked Alice Cooper to see if Glenn would give him a guitar lesson.
He plays the solo on six string bass, probably a Fender VI bass. It is tuned like a guitar but octave lower. Nowadays it is often mistaken as barytone guitar but it isn't all though
it can be tuned in that way too, using lighter strings than bass strings are.
And of course one of the fellow Wrecking Crew members was James Burton, Elvis' lead guitarist and session player in his touring years. James put banjo strings on his guitar to get a different sound and was voted #19 best player of all time in Rolling Stone magazine.
Yes he started as a session musician, he played with so many bands to mention. One of the absolute best guitarists, Ever hands down.

My father was from Piggott, Arkansas and was also friends with Glen. They sometimes shared the stage together at the Palomino Club in the early sixties. It was THE country western club in it's day in North Hollywood, CA.

Although one of my favs of his, followed by “Galveston” and “Dreams of The Everyday Housewife”, his most poignant, heartbreaking song is his last, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” that he recorded as he declined into Alzheimer’s. I highly recommend it. Glen continued to perform well into the depths of dementia, astounding fans as well as others with his ability to continue to play complicated guitar passages while simultaneously losing his life time memories and other mental faculties. The video of “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” that you should react to is the one that appears in the documentary of his battle with Alzheimer’s, called Glen Campbell: I’ll be Me.

My grandfather was a lineman as well as a WW II Vet. He passed soon after I was born so I don't remember him, but when I here this song it brings tears to my eyes.
When Glen Campbell had a TV variety series for a few years, "Gentle on My MInd" was his theme song. An excellent choice for your next song from him. A contemporary of his who was arguably as good with the guitar as him was Roy Clark. Try his song "Yesterday When I Was Young"

I honestly think the best way to get a feel for Glen's ability as an entertainer is live videos. My favorite is actually an instrumental. Glen and Roy Clark playing Ghost Riders in the Sky.
Roy was crazy good and played several stringed instruments. There is a video of Roy and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown playing a swinging version of Take The A-Train. Roy is ad libbing some licks near the end and does something I’d never seen anyone do before (and only once since). After hitting the highest notes you can on a guitar he then deliberately detunes his guitar mid-song to hit notes lower than a guitar can normally hit! That takes skill and supreme confidence. [The other artist I’ve seen do that is Jose Feliciano]

I'm with you girl. This is the song. Like yours, my dad was also lineman. As a child we attended far too many funerals for friends, young in their 30's, who caught a few stray, angry electrons. This song nails it.
An amazing thing about Glen is just how many dozens and dozens of recordings, rock, pop, country, soul, etc. he played lead guitar anonymously as a member of the Wrecking Crew.

One of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard Glenn sing was ‘If You Go Away’. Gorgeous lyrics and so full of emotion. And ‘Honey Come Back’ is another one that just gets me every time.
If You Go Away is a marvelous song. It was written by Jacques Brel, who in the 60s was as prolific as a Lennon or a Dylan.

The man has a beautiful voice. This song, written by Jimmy Webb, was released in 1968. I got the album in 7th grade. IMO the Jimmy Webb songs were often the best. Glen Campbell is one of the best guitar players ever. He didn't read a note of music, but became a highly sought after session guitarist in LA in the early sixties. You absolutely must do "Gentle on My Mind" and "Galveston."

And special thanks too for your shout out to the linemen and others who risk their lives unseen and unsung just so we can live ordinary lives. (Merchant sailors being another group. The men on the Edmund Fitzgerald were among the hundreds of thousands who lost their lives in that trade.) You kids are doing a good job.

He had a summer TV show, a replacement for the Smothers Brothers in 1968. It lead to the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour which ran from 1969-1972. Steve Martin, playing his banjo, was a regular guest
Incidentally, he was a touring member of the Beach Boys from December 1964 to March 1965, filling in for Brian Wilson.
Glen Campbell was also part of a tremendous group of studio musicians known as The Wrecking Crew who played on COUNTLESS hit songs. personally I think "by the time I get to phoenix" and "gentle on my mind" and "wichita lineman" are the 3 classics of his career...galveston is right up there as well... "rhinestone cowboy" is a up beat fun song, but for true emotional melancholy depth and beauty you can't beat the first 3 I made mention... by the way, glen campbell is my personal favorite male country singer of all time..

Ha. Maybe because I'm female, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" just makes me mad. No sympathy here for a man ditching a woman (there's not enough evidence in the song that she's some kind of psychopath🤣). "Wichita Lineman," on the other hand, has a haunting melody, chord structure, and accompaniment (I really love Jimmy Webb's piano interpretation of his song), and the image of a hard-working, faithful, "ordinary" man with "extraordinary" thoughts is so compelling. Wichita Lineman for the win!

This song was popular on the radio when I was in my teens. At the time, my buddies and I thought Glen Campbell was a bit cheesy and a bit too much mainstream pop, and for older folks, like our parents. It wasn't until just recently that I discovered what a phenomenal guitarist Glen Campbell actually is! There are at least a few modern musicians, including metal guitarists, who said that they would have loved to take guitar lessons from Glen Campbell. One of the world's Great guitarists, for sure.

A simple song, simply performed - and it hits you right in the heart every time. And Amber - every time there is a power outage, especially due to bad weather or an accident - I say a prayer for the linemen.
The orchestra with a full string section really shows how much this song was backed and supported. Cambell's voice is always as smooth, comforting and his guitar work was as it always was, smooth, full and perfectly adapted for the style and tone that are the very essence of what the song is and still is. This is one of the greatest songs ever written! And sung by one of the greatest singers. In fact, Jimmy Webb wrote this song specifically for Glen to sing! It's not really a country song in the traditional sense, It's a Country-pop crossover, which Glen himself did a lot of crossover stuff. An amazing talent! And yes, Amber, his voice was clear as spring water and smooth as honey!. One other fun fact that you two may not know, Glen was a long time veteran in the Music Biz, He was one of the original Wrecking Crew studio Musicians out on the west coast. He played guitar in a lot of famous people's songs over the years. We are talking Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and the list goes on.
