I will always have a love/hate feeling whenever I hear Free Bird. A bunch of fellow "flyboys" that I hung out with when I was stationed in the Air Force at England AFB in Alexandria, LA actually had tickets to the show (at the Centroplex in Baton Rouge) that they were heading to when their plane crashed the night before. Wow, I'll never forget that day when it seemed like everyone on the entire base was playing Lynyrd Skynyrd all day and then that night we drove out to Cotile Lake near the base, set a big bonfire and drank ourselves silly paying our last respects and ceremoniously tossed our tickets in the fire as we all sang Free Bird. Then in 1985 when I was back home in NorCal and just after my Dad was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer (at only 51, no less... R.I.P. Pops!) and the "end" was getting near I decided to take a drive one night to be alone and do a little mourning on my own terms, the radio decided to play a live version of Free Bird by Molly Hatchet where they took a minute to remember Ronnie and the others and it just hit me like a ton of bricks so I pulled into a nearby rest area (that fortunately was totally empty) and cranked up the stereo, got out of my car and just started screaming at the top of my lungs and then I started tossing everything that wasn't attached to anything all over the place for 5-10 minutes until the song was over and then I just got back in my car and just started crying for another 10-15 minutes until I had nothing left inside me and drove the hour or so to get back home. So nowadays every time Free Bird comes on the radio and depending on where my head's at I will either crank it up and think of my Dad and sing it to him or maybe, if I can't handle it for whatever reason, I'll just turn it off or change the station so I can get it out of my head...
Hey man THIS bands what's GOT me playing with every record but street survivors only because I wanted I know a little to sound like Steve Gaines and Allen not no one is as awesome as Skynyrd the respect goes out to ALL THE STAFF and Cassie RONNIE ALLEN LEON BILLY EVERY ONE WE LOST THAT WHAT'S IAM. Keep your negative comments to yourself. SKYNYRD MUSIC LIVES ON! I'M SURE RONNIE IS HAPPY.
Was anyone on that stage in the band before the crash? I think of these guys as one the greatest cover bands ever.
