    I really wish the ending could have had just a little more added so we can really know what happened after you know what. Heart wrenching but brilliant. I first heard about this film during my time studying the renaissance in 8th grade. Basically, the entire grade takes two days of the week to celebrate Ren Fest after two months of studying the time to engage in activities where all aspects of the culture were brought with brilliant activities, my favorite included firing a trebuchet with frozen grapefruit on the soccer field at claiming logs., and dancing. My point is when we were in our auditorium as an intro to dancing learning the Washer Womans dance and the dance which name escapes me but was used to as my teacher said, ¨choose a mate.¨ Anyway, I fell in love with it, and before we got into costume to learn them, they played the scene where Will and Viola met at the party dancing, and I was beside myself as the only one inspired to watch the film. Call me whatever you wish, but I loved the film and the beautiful history.

    THIS won best picture over Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, and Life Is Beautiful?

    • @alexf02071999
      @alexf02071999 10 лет назад +44

      While I agree that Thin Red Line and Life is Beautiful are better than Shakespeare in Love, I'm not surprised the Academy snubbed them. Thin Red Line is too artsy for them, and the Academy has always been biased against foreign language films, so Life is Beautiful didn't have a chance.
      As for Saving Private Ryan, I have no idea. That film seemed like it'd be a clear cut favourite to win. Either Spielberg really pissed off the Academy, or the Academy was smoking something strong when they awarded Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan.

    I saw this movie on Netflix right after I'd read Romeo and Juliet and I was like, "You know what Xara, you should watch this shit." Then I watched the trailer and it looked so....meh, and just out of date so I was a bit more reluctant to see it, but nevertheless I did. And let me tell you this-this trailer is such a bad promotion for the movie. It makes the movie seem as if it's in a bad quality which it really isn't! The quality of this movie is so good I forgot it was made in the 1980s. And DO NOT get me started on young Shakespeare. Jesus Lord, bless his soul. Hmm. I loved this movie so much and I think I liked it more because I read the Romeo and Juliet play by William Shakespeare and Shakespeare and his love in real like say some of the stuff Shakespeare then went on to use in Romeo and Juliet is so fucking awesome.

    The movie is so so so soooo good.
    Dont know why people hated it so much because it won an Oscar for best Actress and Best Picture. Like Gwenyth acting here is sooooo good and portrays here character really well with good scriot and dialohue and has nuisance naturally. The Best Picture is also deserving in my opinion because you dont need to have extravagant cinematography just to win a best picture.

      I honestly don't know, I imagine she finds her way back to him, but I feel at the same time like they just didn't finish it, they could have shown where she was going to instead of telling part of the story of Twelfth night, which was the story of the movie mixed with obviously Romeo and Juliet, and other works by Will, but I just don't know. It was a wonderful film, but not quite complete. If they showed us where she was headed above the tree line, or added more narration I would have been satisfied.

Shakespeare in Love is a true love story that put the other two to shame!

      oh goodness.... okay, we see will (Shakspeare) in a bit of trouble with writer's block and without a muse. Then we see Viola at his play, knowing every word, and soon enough she tries out as a man and Will chases her to her home, only knowing her disguise name Tomas Kent. He sadly leaving after waiting past dark notices that the home is hosting a party, where he sneaks in. He sees her, we meet her pursuer, and Will basically falls in love with Viola. they meet, and when ¨Tomas Kent¨ goes back for auditions, will races her to the dock to ask about Viola. She wrote him a letter explaining that her puserer has bought her and by order of the queen, to marry. sadly, she talks about her, and will, and by the end of the boat ride, kisses him, and He is told by the rower who she is. Basically, they spend the night and are in love with the movie. eventually, things happen including the death of Wills's friend and a secret about his past is announced, and while Viola Acts under the timeline of her marriage, they are pulled by their relationship, and... you have to watch the movie to love the story. ;) I love it and no trailer made will do it justice. trust me.

    I'm gonna try to watch this movie because that year in 1998 at the oscars I was so pissed that it should have been Saving Private Ryan to win Best Picture. I don't understand how hollywood are so corrupted.

    saving private ryan is a war film so the acting was spread out and you didn't have like 5 major characters who were good at acting you had all the soldiers who were great at acting, some crying for their mom
    this film probably has better acting overall with a star studded cast... i mean ben affleck for god sake
    however remember SPR won best cinematography !
    i still wanna watch this film so i can judge

    The movie really shows how different those times were, *theatre wise* how all the cheapos were at the front and hand on stage etc! and how weird the 'special effects' were!
