The whole class when our teacher put this film on: "Why do we have to watch this?!" *Shakespeare appears on the screen* ... well I guess we could watch it."
I know this comment is 6 years old and I just want to say that I agree. I didn't watch this film until now because I didn't know about it and I have to for an assignment and the first thing I noticed was how hot Shakespeare looked lmao. XD I'm glad I discovered it! Great watch, a bit confusing on some parts though lol.
I saw this movie for the first time in my Age of Shakespeare history class and LOVED it :D I really liked how in this film a lot of lines and references to some of his other plays were made. This is also one of my favorite romantic comedies and historical fiction movies too!
When I first watched this movie, I didn't realise it featured : Umbridge, VOLDEMORT'S brother, Arthur Weasley , M from James Bond, and Cpt. Hector Barbossa from Pirates
I really wish the ending could have had just a little more added so we can really know what happened after you know what. Heart wrenching but brilliant. I first heard about this film during my time studying the renaissance in 8th grade. Basically, the entire grade takes two days of the week to celebrate Ren Fest after two months of studying the time to engage in activities where all aspects of the culture were brought with brilliant activities, my favorite included firing a trebuchet with frozen grapefruit on the soccer field at claiming logs., and dancing. My point is when we were in our auditorium as an intro to dancing learning the Washer Womans dance and the dance which name escapes me but was used to as my teacher said, ¨choose a mate.¨ Anyway, I fell in love with it, and before we got into costume to learn them, they played the scene where Will and Viola met at the party dancing, and I was beside myself as the only one inspired to watch the film. Call me whatever you wish, but I loved the film and the beautiful history.
While I agree that Thin Red Line and Life is Beautiful are better than Shakespeare in Love, I'm not surprised the Academy snubbed them. Thin Red Line is too artsy for them, and the Academy has always been biased against foreign language films, so Life is Beautiful didn't have a chance. As for Saving Private Ryan, I have no idea. That film seemed like it'd be a clear cut favourite to win. Either Spielberg really pissed off the Academy, or the Academy was smoking something strong when they awarded Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan.
Yeah mate, Rhino deserved it easy. Take in mind this is the same Academy who haven't given Depp, Di Caprio and Pitt Oscars... Also the same Academy who nominated Peter O'toole 8 times but only has a honory oscar to show for it.
I saw this movie on Netflix right after I'd read Romeo and Juliet and I was like, "You know what Xara, you should watch this shit." Then I watched the trailer and it looked so....meh, and just out of date so I was a bit more reluctant to see it, but nevertheless I did. And let me tell you this-this trailer is such a bad promotion for the movie. It makes the movie seem as if it's in a bad quality which it really isn't! The quality of this movie is so good I forgot it was made in the 1980s. And DO NOT get me started on young Shakespeare. Jesus Lord, bless his soul. Hmm. I loved this movie so much and I think I liked it more because I read the Romeo and Juliet play by William Shakespeare and Shakespeare and his love in real like say some of the stuff Shakespeare then went on to use in Romeo and Juliet is so fucking awesome.
The thing is, Shakespeare didn't write Romeo and Juliet, He copied it from someone else. But I know the movie is suposed to be fiction. It looks good. I'm about to watch it!
@@richardprado5914 No one talks about Shakespeare in Love anymore. People are still talking about Saving Private Ryan and 2001 A Space Oddessy on the other hand.
I remember watching this when it first came out and I loved it. I still love it but now when I watch it I have to try really hard not to think of Joseph Finese in bloody The Handmaids Tale lol 😂 otherwise it throws off the whole thing but I do still love this movie I still feel gutted each time that Viola and Will never ended up together in the end
Thought the narration is just a parody but it is not.... The movie is so so so soooo good. Dont know why people hated it so much because it won an Oscar for best Actress and Best Picture. Like Gwenyth acting here is sooooo good and portrays here character really well with good scriot and dialohue and has nuisance naturally. The Best Picture is also deserving in my opinion because you dont need to have extravagant cinematography just to win a best picture. One of my favorite romantic comedy film of all time.
I honestly don't know, I imagine she finds her way back to him, but I feel at the same time like they just didn't finish it, they could have shown where she was going to instead of telling part of the story of Twelfth night, which was the story of the movie mixed with obviously Romeo and Juliet, and other works by Will, but I just don't know. It was a wonderful film, but not quite complete. If they showed us where she was headed above the tree line, or added more narration I would have been satisfied.
Okay... there is a lot of controversy now being winning Best Picture and Best Actress and all but when u re-watched it again... i feel like Judi Dench also doesnt deserve to be called the "BEST supporting Actress" of course her as Queen Elizabeth had an impact but i mean she was average... and i think in terms of supporting the best one from this movies (actress) will be Viola's nurse... she was very supportive
Brilliant movie, excellent writing, plot, acting and music. Would be unfair to relate the artists to the acts of the producer. Saving private Ryan is a great movie also, but not as different/unique as this movie. Interestingly enough the apothecary who is also the money of the play is told to stay quiet and listen at some point.
I first saw the movie poster at the theaters back in the summer of 98 and finally saw it after college. Great film. It's hilarious and sad how women talk about Romeo & Juliet & the Titanic but they never mention Shakespeare in Love. R & J were too young. Titanic was an affair. Shakespeare in Love is a true love story that put the other two to shame!
