However, the Sunnis believe that it was abrogated by Umar ibn Kittab and the Prophet while the Shia Twelver's (Jafari) still believe it is permissible. However it is important to note that Mut'ah in Shia jurisprudence is still recommended to be 3 days or longer. It is mostly used as a way for people to control sexual urges or as a form of halal dating for those who cannot get permanently married due to restrictions (i.e unable to provide for your wife as a man). Also the women if she is virgin (not married before) Muslim needs her Wali (fathers) permission and must wait the Iddah (2 mensuration cycles or 90 days/three lunar months) if there was penetrative intercourse during the Mut'ah. So no, Mut'ah is NOT prostitution.
