An injury to the musculo-skeletal system can result in damage to bones, joints, muscles and tendons (muscle to bone).

Classification of fracture
1. On basis of Etiology
Traumatic- by external force. Ex- Fall, road traffic accident etc.
Pathological- some underlying disease. Ex- bone tumor, arthritis
Stress- due to chronic repetitive injury. Not visible in x-ray.
(MRI and bone scan). Athelete
2. On the basis of displacements
Un-displaced (Non displaced)
Displaced- Factors responsible for displacement
Fracturing force
Muscle pull on fragment
Gravity
3. On the basis of Relationship with External Environment
Closed- not communicate with external environment
Open -
Internally open- from within
Externally open- from outside
4. On the basis of Complexity of treatment
Simple fracture- Fracture in 2 piece. Ex- transverse fracture of humerus
Complex fracture- Fracture in multiple piece.
5. On the basis pattern
Transverse fracture- fracture perpendicular to long axis of bone caused by bending or beating force
Oblique fracture- caused by bending force
Spiral fracture- caused by twisting force
Comminuted fracture- caused by crushing and compression force
Segmental fracture- 2 fracture in 1 bone at different level
6. On the basis of quantum of force causing fracture-
High velocity fracture-
Result of severe trauma force (like traffic accident).
Severe soft tissue injury (periosteal and muscle injury)
Extensive devascularisation of fracture ends.
Difficult to treat
Low velocity fracture-
Result of mild trauma force (fall while walking)
Little associated with soft tissue injury
Heal predictably
Lately shift low-high velocity so change in the pattern of fracture (more complex) then difficult to treat
