@@leopoldbloom4835 What happens when you are in a swift current? Or you need to signal to the boat where you are after being swept off a dive site. I shoot my DSMB from near my bottom depth. Which is why I recommend you carry the largest spool possible, and for deeper dives reels become the requirement.
Thanks for this great tutorial. As a recent Open Water certified diver, information like this fills in some of the gaps left in the training I received and keep the mind on diving during my off season.
Like that you say you can use them for lots of different things. My son and his buddy used a spool to keep them together earlier this year when diving Old Harry's Rocks in Swanage. Their dive boat missed them surfacing, and there DSMBs/whistles, and they were carried off on the current around 4 miles from the start point of the dive. They used one of their reels/lines to keep them together to make it easier to find them and stop them getting separated. They were picked up after about an hour drifting on the surface.
It depends on how you are diving. I do a lot of cold water diving here in the uk. With dry gloves and under gloves on the bigger flared edges and the large hole in the middle make the world of difference in ease of use compared to a little plastic one with a dimple in the middle. If your doing diving without gloves then it probably doesn’t matter what you have as you can feel what your doing a lot easier with naked hands. Hope this helps.
@@divesmartuk1727 But are you talking about alu spools in general or about the apeks ones? What makes them so special compared to the other alu spools? I think i agree with @Leopold Bloom
so why don't we keep the smb attached to the spool before the dive starts?
Good question. As I need my spool for nothing but shooting the DSMB, I cut the line to 6 metres and keep it attached to the buoy all the time.
That only really works if you are putting it in a pocket.

Same here❤️
Didn’t even deploy one on my open water last year :/ I bought one now and a dsmb so going to self learn.

Love to see suggestions on how to carry smb and spool together. I usually have mine together and clipped off.
Apeks spools for the win.
Apeks spoold are the best!
I like these formats. Thank you guys!!
Damn Marks on FIREEEE, Thought Q&A #7 was the last video of 2020 lol.
Thanks for this. Very useful. I did my training before smbs were part of the teaching and have some knowledge missing... Until now!
Love the education!
I wish you’d keep your own channel going on the side
Steel reel will survive having a tank dropped on it - how about an ex-army Cheiftain? :-)
Are the apeks spools worth their super high price?
Actually, no. The brand name is printed too small to show off to the other divers and in any other regard, they are the same as the cheap ones. 😉😁
yah. if your a gear junkie like me
Yep
