It actually does still fit with the freebie installed you just had it turned wrong …I just did this today and mine slipped down snug and locked into place so if you have the little grab bar insert you can still use the bag too they work together holding the insert into place tighter

I did like you did and tried to out it in backwards didn’t work then right way and it slid right into place
