    Looks like a fun build. Tip in case you didnt know, just print your CAD file. You can verify sizing and placement without cutting anything but paper.

      That is a really good idea , thank you. Did not know that was possible, so I will explore that next time:) Big thank you for the great idea and for giving feedback:)

      @@modularhippo Anything bigger than 1 sheet can be printed on multiple sheets and taped together. Or save as *.pdf and print at local print shop.

      Thanks Art Smith, really good idea as will allow me to 'proof of concept' without spending money on cutting and wasting good material. Thank You for comment and great idea👍🏻

    Have you got to the part where you try to control it with an electronic boat/marine throttle? That’s where I’m having a tough time!

    • @modularhippo
      @modularhippo  2 месяца назад

      Hey Jon - Thank you for taking time to comment:) I have a throttle that Golden Motor sells and although not having the traditional marine design it is still something that I believe should work. Push forward and motor spins one direction, pull back and it spins in opposite direction. One throttle connected to two motor controllers. I am still in early days in relation to battery bank so not tested it yet but can cover what I got in next episode if it will help? If you check the 'electric inboard' tab on www.goldenmotor.com/ you will see the one I got. If you check the outboard tab I believe there are some other models that could be of interest:)

      Hi John, Thank you for taking an interest:) It is an interesting subject indeed. Still a fair bit to go but will get their slowly:) As soon as I get motor back from welding next week it should start to come together. Next step is to focus on the mechanics that will allow me to tension the pulley belts. Then comes finding a place for motor controllers and the water cooling components. All fun stuff:) To be continued.

    Thank you, interesting! Maybe I missed it but are you going to use two motors?

    • @modularhippo

      Hi Rattusrat - Thank you for your interest. Correct, the idea is to run two 10Kw motors in parallel (let's see how it turns out in reality), ha ha:) - Just released Ep. 4 that should give a better picture of the 2 motors mounted:) Any questions let me know and I will assist. ruclips.net/video/MaReKNz9kZ8/видео.html

      @@modularhippo interesting. I am just planning a conversion of our 36 ft 9 ton sailboat. Plan to go with one 10kw golden motor since that is probably more then our old diesel will deliver. So will follow your build!

      @@rattusrat I'm no expert. Typical sailboat is 2hp per 1,000 lbs. You're 18,000 lbs so 36hp. 10kW is around 13hp.

    So your main reason for making the frame out of stainless was to prevent bending the metal under load? Do you think 10mm aluminium would actually flex? Very kind of you to share your designs, open hardware is amazing. ^_^ I thought about trying to copy your design, but I'm thinking for someone who wants to change belts often and quickly, a hinged approach might still be best. That sail, your designs have the mount points for the motor confirmed to be good.... Hrm. ;)

    • @modularhippo
      @modularhippo  6 месяцев назад

      My reasons for going for stainless were primary strength but also weight for stability. The motor on a boat counts towards the overall ballast weight, and even with stainless, I am coming in lower than the Yanmar I am replacing and have to compensate with additional lead weights. Saying that, I believe you would be fine with aluminium. Having a hinged version as you say would be beneficial or some form of spring-loaded belt tension system.

      @@modularhippo Aaaah, ok. In my case, my batteries will make the stern heavier than before, so I've been thinking about keeping things as light as possible to stay on trim. Also, Al to Al would have less corrosion concerns, I figured. Of course, stainless is indeed stronger.

    • @modularhippo
      @modularhippo  5 месяцев назад

      @@TheDigitalMermaid - Makes perfect sense. For any SS bolts that goes into AL I use plenty of Sikaflex as proven to do the trick:) For any other connections I always have plastic spacers to make sure zero contact or the AL will start to sacrifice itself within days when throwing salt water into the mix. My main batteries are placed around the keel housing so in that area I will have to remove 200+ Kg lead instead.

    Hi,how much did one motor cost ?

    • @modularhippo
      @modularhippo  2 месяца назад

      Hi Gaming Boy, for the 10KW BLDC/PMSM Motor (48v) I paid $715 (plus local tax and import tax which varies depending on your country). Your best bet is to contact hunter@goldenmotor.com (sales person I dealt with) and check what deals they have at the moment:) Link to motor place: www.goldenmotor.com/frame-bldcmotor.htm

    • @modularhippo
      @modularhippo  6 месяцев назад +1

      @larrydavisflysite Hey Larry! Thanks for your comment! This one hits 26-27 HP and is 20 Kw so 200 HP solution would requires some biiiiig motors:) - Saw that you have 'fly' in your name so of for aviation, then I would go for a pancake model as have better torque👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    • @jonblair5470
      @jonblair5470 2 месяца назад +1

      @@modularhippo 20kw continuous? But since you’re using twin motors your torque should be nearly double. Which will keep the boat going at the rated motor rpm easier. Like my 21ft deckboat at 5000 rpm gets me at 25 mph.

    • @modularhippo
      @modularhippo  2 месяца назад

      @jonblair5470 - So many variables to take into account. Prop max RPM, Pulley Gearing and finding the motor RPM sweet spot :) Looking forward to bench testing as soon as I get to that stage:) I guess the goal is to find the spot where I use least amount of Kwh against a reasonable speed:) Please tell me more about your project as sou is interesting :)

      Wow, did not know that, understandably annoying to audience. Channel is not monetised so guess RUclips will take the opportunity to make the most of it. As you say, 3 Adverts in a 9 minute video is a bit excessive and is not helping the creators to deliver a good experience.
