it's so disheartening to see so many Americans, many of which were alive during WW2 and remember what occupation and fighting against it are like, praising Putin and Russia for their actions and going against our own people. Be prepared for China to pull the same thing with Taiwan...I think Putin and China have a "you take the land you want and back me and I will back you and take what I want" deal.

Agreed except that very few Americans alive in WW II still are. Even if born in 1945, you would be 77 today. And they would not, or barely remember the things you discuss. I was born in 1962, but had a father who was a huge history buff, and made me one too - so I have some understanding of what the Soviets did in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, etc.
My worry is that Putin will take Ukraine, and then start testing whether NATO will actually go to war to defend Estonia, or other small eastern European NATO nations. Why do you think he unveiled a nuclear 1st strike policy? Militarily, Nucs are all he has against the west, and we need to show him that we will take the risk and destroy him if needed.
Crazy and ambitious as I consider him, I do not believe Putin would stand up to that.
Many of the old school Republicans are pushing Biden to do more to help Ukraine. The ones who are taking Russia's side are the younger ones, the populist RHINOs, who want an autocratic leader.
Putin is a cold, calculated, authoritarian realist. He's comfortable using and abusing his power to accomplish his goals. But he's also very intelligent and he's good at understanding his capabilities and reading the situations that he and his adversaries find themselves in. In many ways he's a classic villain, but he's brought real power and respect on the world stage back to Russia after a period of perceived and real humiliation.
What he has done to Ukraine is terrible, but it is very similar to what the west has done to Serbia regarding Kosovo, Sudan regarding South Sudan, Indonesia regarding East Timor, and Yugoslavia regarding Bosnia-Herzegovina. Russia has also played this game before in Georgia regarding Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as earlier with Ukraine regarding Crimea.
The fact that the West has acted incorrigibly in the past is no excuse for Russia tearing apart a country now which will likely lead to the deaths and suffering of thousands of innocents. I wholeheartedly believe that we should do whatever we can to dissuade Russia from continuing this course, but I don't think anything we're considering will have that affect, any more than Russia's protestations kept us from ripping Kosovo away from Serbia.
As for Putin, he's very good for Russia, and very bad for us. I don't think American's should be praising him, but recognizing his talents is probably in our best interests.

As a country? Maybe. But we were the ONLY major power to act before attacked. But you have to learn history and understand the times. Just about 20 years ago we had sent Americans to die in what was supposed to be the war to end all wars, and here, Europe was at it again - fighting among themselves as it seemed they always had. But also, Hitler was not exterminating Jews before we entered the war, and most Americans knew nothing about that until the end of the war. Would they have cared? Maybe not, but I suspect most would.
I had a friend, raised before and during Nazi rule. Skipping to the end, a week before she died, she told me she was afraid. She had lived in Berlin during WW II. She thought Hitler was great. But she did not know about the extermination camps - but what scared her was this - "I did not know what was happening, but if I had, at the time - I would have cheered!" She in her later years considered that an unforgivable sin for which she would go to hell.
If a German Hitler supporter had no clue until the war ended, I don't think you can honestly expect better here. My grandfather, who was quite the bigot - mostly over race, but not a big fan of Jews either, helped liberate one of the least horrible camps, and still had nightmares about what he saw. He was there, on the ground, fighting the battles, and until that day, had no clue what the Germans were doing, and not even then.

Europe is worried, and that is why the USA has an interest in The Ukraine. The USA has had a strong footprint on the continent for 40 years. We have military bases in Europe and the ME. Don't want the Russians to start toppling vulnerable nations and be on the doorstep again.

Someone should ask the National Archives whether they managed to retrieve the US nuclear launch codes from Mar-a-Lago, or whether *that* is the box that was sent to Russia by FedEx.
That’s the most serious comment… That we should actually take time to figure that out.
It only hurts when I laugh. And, as previous comment says, serious question.
I believe General Milley said that these codes were actually changed at the end of Dump's term, after he lost the election, so he couldn't start WWIII to stay in power.
Even if launch codes hadn't changed (which I'm sure they have) I think there's steps to the process of deploying missiles, probably equipment involved. The other thing is, after Trump gave sensitive info to Russians, I suspect information began to be withheld from him by the military. I don't have any proof, but based on some of the things top brass revealed after DJT left office, I bet they were pretty wary of his ability to keep secrets.
Won't matter if Russia turns its sights on us.

Putin's annexation of Crimea was not the first annexation following World War 2, Beijing annexed Tibet and East Turkestan ( Xinjiang ) after World War 2 and the Soviet Union annexed 4 islands off the northern coast of Japan right after World War 2.

I read somewhere that the US is currently in the legal phase of autocracy. It starts this way because they want to win so bad, politics even foreign policy where it used to be bipartisan is no longer getting support. It's about topping the other side and getting into power. Unfortunately, there's too much national support for these unsavory characters and the Russian way of disinformation is the go-to strategy of the GOP. Not saying Democrats are saints and doesn't have a left leaning slant on things but the outright lies ...man that's some serious shit. Makes me think that Russia won after all. It has destabilized US democracy so badly that they actually have sympathizers in the government and media. is it too late? i think so. The US needs something to bring people together but there's no candidate that is powerful or strong enough and both sides just want to bulldoze each other down. A nation so divided cannot possibly lead the international community, and Putin knows it. It's precisely why he's attacking now.
If we really believe that "our Allies need our guidance" then we already are on the same side of a dictator and a lunatic.
