- What would you do if you found a child thrown in the garbage on Christmas Eve?

Tokyo Godfathers is the 2003 Christmas movie from Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Perfect Blue), following three homeless individuals, Hana, Gin, and Miyuki, as they find a child, which they name Kiyoko, in the trash on Christmas Eve. Hana, a transgender woman, wants to take care of the child, however Gin, an addict, and Miyuki, a runaway teen, believe they should turn Kiyoko into the police. After they discuss, Hana splits the difference, taking Gin and Miyuki with her on an adventure to find the child’s mother and analyze her situation, and make sure that it is both taken care of, and done so with love. As a former discarded child herself, she explains that she doesn’t want the same fate to befall another. A series of wild events occurs on this quest, taking the three unhoused individuals on a Christmas miracle journey, as they reunite with their respective families from this found family. Overall, this great film to watch from Satoshi Kon creates a meaningful story discussing family, care and love, and analyzing the self worth issues that come from our mistakes, and how all these form to both create, and solve complex situations. It ends on a hopeful note, explaining that there is no human worth throwing in the trash.

I remember going to Japan as an exchange student and hanging out with the Japanese and the fellow exchange students and I spotted a peculiar homeless man. He was playing the violin on the floor, by the station gate leading to the skywalk. I always wondered how he ended up there and kinda empathized since I also used to play the violin. He was always so grateful and even shaking my hand. Makes me wonder what he was like before
I hope that guy's doing well especially this Christmas and gets the care he needs.
Minor but nonetheless important detail that I noticed; it seems like I watched a different sub of the movie than the one you used for footage here. In the scene where Hana gets into the fight with the guy at the club, your footage has her saying "'Shit' I'll take, but 'fart' I won't!" However, in the sub that I watched, she said "'Shit' I'll take, but 'pops' I won't!" because the man who she spilled wine on had said "get outta here, pops!", essentially undermining her identity as a woman. I feel like this gives her a much more understandable grounds for reacting the way she did, and changes the character of the scene significantly. Kinda crazy how big of a difference a single word can make. Just figured I'd mention it.
Oh yeah, that puts a lot more emotional context behind the scene. Normally the differences are overblown, but that's truly distinct
"Fart" is a word people use to refer to older men ("You old fart!") as well, so i dont think it changes the scene too much. The intention of the insult is the same.

Miyuki´s personal evolution arc it´s noticed and how during the first half of the movie never addressed Hana on her name, but then later on she calls actually as Miss Hana indeed instead of the derogatory label she used on her mocking that wasn´t a true biological-woman.

Yeah, I had to choose love over stability. I had to pick being homeless and the person I loved or a comfortable life with an unsympathetic family. I am really happy I did.

@@ProfessorViral They have gotten a lot more comfortable, I just love this film for how kind it feels. It’s a strange nostalgia that it brings back. The idea of “Remember having nothing? Those were good times.” Is surreal and something I wish nobody had to experience or understand.

This movie is my favourite holiday watch, a little bit more down to earth than other works of the author, it's simple and warm and honestly just speaks to me on a personal level
(also has one of the best russian dubs I ever heard)
I did really enjoy getting to see Satoshi Kon present a story which is mostly in reality, although the level of coincidence is so extreme, but thats also the point so I don't mind it. It showed so a range that only made me respect his works more

What i really find interesting is it made me think how everyone is a character in someone else's story. All intertwining, breaking apart, and intertwining again. Everyone could be a main character here. Is Kyoko the main character? a MacGuffin? The movie doesn't really have a definitive ending but another beginning. In the end we don't know exactly how anyone's story ends. Its just the beginning of a new chapter for each character.
Let me say this, I am an old Satoshi Kon fan. Learned of his work when Perfect Blue first came out the US. No one back then that I knew cared about his work or the look of it.
When Tokyo Godfathers came out hardly anyone would watch it with me due to the characters and the style of the animation. The homophobia, hate towards trans people, hate towards homeless and the misogyny was really bad back then. Seriously, the early 2000s really really sucked. So seeing so many people now coming around to his work, especially one I fought hard to find back when it got released like Tokyo Godfathers, makes me so happy.
I hope you continue to indulge in Satoshi Kon's work. He was a gifted and kind man. Truly ahead of his time.
His work made me feel like I wasn't so alone back in the early 2000s and I am just so glad he continues to touch people's hearts to this day.

while I always love more content talking about Satoshi Kon's works I think it was a real missed opportunity you didn't get the movie out before the rescreening it had in theaters this month. Being able to see this movie in theaters was such a wonderful experience and I wish more people knew about it so that they could have seen it too. Nah, this is purely performative and preys on some pretty transphobic ideas about trans women. We have a situation where an adult is choosing to keep a literal infant living on the street which would be an INCREDIBLE RISK TO THE CHILD'S LIFE because.... no one could possibly love a child like a trans-woman filled with the envy of natal women's reproductive capacity... yuk, what a nasty transphobic caricature of a selfish person who would put the safety of a child second to their gender euphoria and feelings of gender affirmation.

As a trans person, the entire video but especially the section about Hana really spoke to me. You approached this with seriousness, dignity, and respect. Maybe more than all of those as well, empathy. Thank you for that.

The true black humor that is life opens up when you find concepts like these. You accept fault, you take on the mistakes and the act becomes self-destructive and leads you to a downwards spiral.
Truly life is nothing but struggle, for the moment you float away from the constantly churning water of conflict and struggle, you fall apart. Life exists only on the borders of chaos. With suffering and struggling.

I feel like the World would have been a much kinder, better place to live in, if all Humans were like Hana. She is such an Angel and while her life circumstances were utterly heartbreaking, to see such a wonderful, kind and empathetic woman come out of that pain was so wonderful.

I love this movie. Easily one of my favorite movies ever. Maybe that's just because I was abandoned at birth, but I have to think this is a beautiful and bittersweet story to anyone.

we often speak of difficult situations to their most extremes, trying to justify actions and possibly even inspire. the most difficult part of this, is how it always seems fabricated, imagination run wild and too fictitious to ever reasonably happen, and are suprised if even one bit of it may come true. This video shows stories of some of those extremes, yet most know the feelings (even if many believe feelings are truely weak). guilt, shame, depression, loss, helplessness. many feel these and very few can truly push through it every day, each time it hits them back down.

As a healthcare worker i am surrounded by people including myself prone to sacrificing too much (sometimes driven by that lack of self worth) and just want everyone to hear: you have to be as healthy as possible in order to best care for others - pushing yourself too far can actually mean you provide less optimal care.
I watch this movie every winter it's jus so good! Thanks for giving it the highlight it deserves!

oh my god it's been a long time since I've seen Tokyo Godfathers and I remember loving it so much. I also highly recommend Millenium Actress, made by the same director. Thanks for making this video essay.

I watched this some years ago, loved it. Having recently had a baby, seeing that little angel abandoned in the dumpster punched me in the gut and brought me to tears. I cant continue, and I still have to hide anything having to do with babies in bad situations because I genuinely can not wrap my head around ever victimizing such a helpless little soul. Like damn. But this was a great movie to make a video on. Gonna go cry now.

Sometimes in order to overcome your situation and the problems of your life, you must sacrifice your selfish ambitions and personal reservations, even though Prof just said that the world operates on a certain amount of selfishness. To oversome said selfishness is to transcend your human weakness and become something better. It's definitely not easy, and we won't always be able to do it 24/7, but little steps go a long way.
This movie has always been a favorite.

I have a love hate relationship with your videos because on one hand every time I watch them I always find my self wondering and questioning if the points and analysis you bring up are for lack of a better word right and or wrong because you imbue so much emotion and humanity in your work that it because hard at least for me to gage what can objectively be taken out of what you’re saying. But then I start thinking about wether or not it’s right to do that in the first place to divorce emotions from art or from people for that matter. You’re videos alway make me self reflection and in hindsight I believe that’s why I always have a negative reaction to your videos at first but always by the end you have me feeling genuine emotions about the topic and tearing up. You have made me realize that I don’t really know what emotions are. I don’t know if anyone else feels this way or has dealt with this but I know I have feelings and I know I experienced them but I guess I don’t know that like I find my self wondering well who am I to know what live is and if that is really what I’m feeling for my partner or family and or friends. Same with any other emotion and I believe that leaves me to kind of divorce my self from said feelings and in turn have an initial small irritation when it’s brought up or used as a lease to view the world but it’s wrong to do that because that is literally half of the human experience and I honestly don’t know what to do about that. Am I crazy for feeling this way ? Or do you guys question your feeling too?

At the end of the day, the logic of my videos, unless I specifically state research, is entirely on either knowledge I acquired in the past, for example speaking about Deontology after reading Kant, or what the author presented in the work, which may or may not be something they researched. I don't think its wrong to question the validity of what I say, because it is emotion-based and subjective. But, that's why the point of it to me is simply self reflection; when I raise a point about a character, does someone see themself in it? Do they disagree with me? Did it make them reconsider a previous thought? If I can get someone to ask a further "why" after any of those, then I did what I set out to do, which is to create consideration in their mind, and hopefully it leads them somewhere positive if so.
For the rest, I don't have an answer. My relationship with emotions is complex as well, likely down to certain conditions running in my family. I know that I feel them, but I'm also aware of times where I don't feel them the same as others commonly state. I question who I am because i question the subjectivity of emotions, if they aren't based on fact but simply internal calculations I can't help, what really is true about me, or the world? But, I think that line has an end which should be made for mental health. There is no reason to question the validity of the world to the point we begin to miss out on it, because then we won't have a proper gauge to judge it anyway. The best I can say is to ask these questions with the people who know you best, in ways you're both comfortable with. There's nothing wrong with feeling or not feeling, we are all valid, it's just about finding your personal balance
I have a friend who brings up similar issues wbout feeling like his emotions are fake, but i have no idea how to help him with that either
@jerisonswhackyworld6403 If it helps at all, emotions are tools that your brain uses to process information. Also, you are able to choose how you feel about things depending on how you frame things within your perspective. Thankfully, we are not our emotions and our emotions can often happen as a result of our nervous system reacting to stimuli it has experienced before, but that too can be learned and relearned with practice or therapy.
Perhaps you could make some bullet notes when significant events happen throughout the day and track what kind of emotion you're feeling. Over a couple weeks, you can look back on your data and see the trends of how you're feeling and why. It might help you feel more in touch with your own emotions, or help see where things feel out of whack.
Well, emotions in the environment and media may have been manipulated by colonialism, to sustain colonialism, if emotions are invested in their interests of capitalist consummerism and not nature, alone?
This Movie is my favourite Christmas movie I love the parallel they have with the life of christ in the gospel of Luke which is spoken about in the opening scene. Christ according to the luke was born unwanted by the world and could be considered an outcast not unlike the main characters of this movie. I think the movie shows how unconditional can heal individuals and draw everyone together in community. Thanks for the great video. I think Miyukis' father did always care he just didn't show in a way she could understand as shes' a child. I don't think someone who was truly uncaring would react they he did to the situation. Although I do agree he prob did have empathy about their relationship as probably wasn't emotionally available as he could/ should have been. Great video thanks for sharing x

Honestly Hana is probably one of the best examples of a well writen Trans character. They have flaws just like anyone else. An yet they are still portrayed as a genuine character an not a "token" character like how many modern works include to pander.
