This is a great video there is so much stigma around working in mental health as an occupational therapist. did any of your lecturers try to talk you out of mental health. When I started occupational therapy I wanted to do mental health. I had lecturers talk me out of working in mental health. Now as a new speech pathology student I can still work in mental health.
Hey! Loved this video and so happy to see an upload from you. I’m so glad you’re in a position that you’re happy with! Working with kids sounds really fun. I share the same sentiment about green tea haha - it’s healthy but gross! Have you ever heard of rooibos tea? It’s amazing! Lots of health benefits but tastes stacks better than green tea. You should look into it! Also, what do you do to keep yourself busy now that you’re working full time? Does it feel strange not studying?
Hey! Thanks so much for watching :) I'll have to look more into Rooibos tea- I'm pretty sure I've heard of it. Thanks for the suggestion haha Well working full time and long hours takes up most of my days so I don't have a whole lot of time for extra-curriculars so I try to get to the gym for an hour most days, cooking dinner, music rehearsals and spending time with friends and family take up my free time. Sometimes I get to read for leisure, watch netflix or youtube. As a clinician you are constantly learning/studying to keep up with research and especially as new grads to learn new theory and skills. I choose to spend most nights reading books/articles for at least 10mins for work to keep learning and being the best clinician i can be.
Hi ! What is the difference between the job scope within OT mental health and Psychologists/Counsellor?? Does OT covers further into client's daily activities? Like you guys will run through these activities with them besides giving talk therapy??
I have a question. What sort of decision making process did you have for choosing youth mental health OT? Did you choose after placements, research, or talk to professionals? Did you always want to do it? What sort of questions should one ask themselves in choosing a specialty area in OT? I’m on my last year of OT school this year so I’m just considering these things. Love your videos by the way 😊
Hey Brooke :) Great questions I already had an interest in working with kids and mental health so I put my preferences for placement for these two fields and was fortunate to experience both these areas separately (paediatrics and Adult MH). These experiences confirmed my interest in combining these areas in a job. Definitely recommend talking to OT's working in the field whether thats when they guest lecturer or reaching out to them yourself. Get an idea of the sorts of things you would do day to day - there is always going to be paperwork/documentation but the type of clinical work would differ e.g. one on one or group therapy, consulting etc. Have a think would sort you would prefer.
Hiya! Real interesting hearing your perspectives! I found out you’re from UQ, I’m a 2019 grad from there! I got a new grad job in a secure MH unit and start next week! Also the green tea is shit yep but if you live around brisbane I suggest buying tea from a lady who runs The Steepery Co.
Hey thr. This is akash Im a 4th year Bachelors of occupational therapy student , i wanted to do post graduation in mental health can u recommend me any college in UK , and i have another question can someone after completing undergraduate degree of occupational therapy can apply for job in a health care setup ?? as an Ot , or masters is mandatory for applying for job ???
Hi there, unfortunately i didn't study in the UK so I can't recommend a particular University. I'd recommend reaching out to those who are in the UK (if anyone from the UK reads this feel free to reply as well!), doing your own research and contacting the universities yourself. I'm also unsure what you are referring to by "health care set up". Do you mean owning your own health clinic/practice?
Hi I am also in Australia. I started occupational therapy but moved into speech pathology. My favourite teacher is a mental health occupational therapist from England. She did a Masters degree in Cognitive behavioural therapy. Not sure of the exact title. But it was a two year degree. She did it through Manchester University. Not sure if the degree is still running as it was 20 years ago. See if you can do it online. Most occupational therapists do a short course in CBD. But because she did a two year masters she seemed to be a fantastic clinician. Well done on wanting to do a Masters degree. people are complex and might not feel like telling you what is wrong with them.
