Just a warning to anyone about to take neck training seriously. *BE CAREFUL* I started neck training about 2 years ago and was loving the results. As someone who naturally has a narrow frame meaning my head and jawline are small, my neck being bigger really increased the way I looked from the front and gave a more masculine look, but, I ended up taking it too far, focusing on how much I can neck curl instead of how I am neck curling. The damage I ended up doing to my neck caused countless problems to my nerves and a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is often referred to as the most painful condition in the world. I'm not trying to put anyone off neck training because it's very beneficial, and if I could go back I'd 100% do it again, but with much more caution. Stay some my dudes
Thanks for the info. People need to pay attention to potential injuries when doing any lifts that can potentially injure their spine. I speak from experience as I went from a 1100+ powerlifting score as a little guy to not even being able to do 30 bodyweight squats due to retrolisthesis and severe nerve damage that caused muscle atrophy in my left leg. Can't even run anymore because of it.

Hey, going to start neck training for the first time. How long do you reckon I should stick with the warmups before going ahead with the actual routine?

Best vid I've seen for neck training, well done! I began training my neck back in the 80s when I started working as a bouncer and figured a neck like Tyson or Holyfield not only looked mighty impressive, it would act like a shock absorber! A friend showed me a simple exercise that I've done ever since which works very well with no injuries which is your "basic neck curl" on this vid. At one point I was using 2 x 20 kg discs - no BS - for 10 reps on this movement, and my neck was 22"! I still use a 20 kg disc for high reps today. For the back of the neck I would simply stand, and using a rolled up towel between both hands as resistance, just lower my chin to my chest and then push back slowly, increasing resistance on every set. If you have strong triceps you can make this movement as effective as any machine. For the sides of my neck I found heavy shrugs pretty much got that covered. In four decades (fuck!) of neck training, I've never once sustained an injury - touch wood!
Same, training since mid 80's :) I'll go you one better...I think the neck muscles are synergists with some neighbouring bodypart, which we train the hell out of, thereby causing an imbalance that you unknowingly corrected in yourself. Usually this imbalance isn't a problem BUT, a sudden car accident could expose that issue. I have to wonder how many neck injuries outside the gym could have been prevented or hugely mitigated by enanced neck musculature...

Snich Trolliana Stop blaming your lack of confidence on fapping. Even if you stop, people will definitely look weird at you when doing this exercise because they just don’t understand. Fuck them
DUDE! I have been dealing with neck problems for years. I'm 52 years old and started having back issues at 16 and neck issues about 10 years later. Its hereditary/genetic. For the past umteenth number of years I've been getting cortisone injections from a pain clinic physician, on both sides of my cervical vertebrae to treat the pain and inflammation and do this every 4-6 months. I came across this video by accident. I began doing the stretches and exercises you recommend in this video and even after the first time, my neck has started to feel better. What you demonstrate seems so obvious as to the benefits of training the neck for athletes, but i have always avoided doing anything like this to treat the neck pain for fear that I'd injure myself and make the pain even worse. The key here is to properly stretch and start off slowly and build the weight up gradually over time, like any exercise. I can't thank you enough for doing this video. I feel as though a weight has been lifted off my shoulders (no pun intended). Its very selfless of you to do this and I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart. You're awesome! Now with that out of the way, i need to ask you if this will improve my golf game? LOL. --Be well and again thank you!
This video aged well, knowing that this specific training worked for him recently and made his neck handle the aggression of a 130kgs guy against him, without injuries. Well done Jeff

I was searching for this ADVISE n training! you are awesome..... Love it and you motivate me. keep it up thank you!
Doing other heavy lifting will also build your traps and neck too. You don't really need to do specific training for the neck itself, if you lift for years, your neck will grow too.
Jeff please add to the title something like "How To Build A Thicker Choke Resistant Neck Fast! (Simple Science-Based Training)" the internet would love it.
Never trained my neck before. I got a little nauseous just by the warm up. Realized I gotta get this into my workout habit for sure. Great vid🔥 Thanks a lot 🙏
fr, can't tell if the nausea's from moving my head around or from the tightness around my throat. Though I've only been doing it for a week and it's already getting better
From a physical therapist's perspective, especially of you are strengthening your neck for pain, I'd suggest adding in deep cervical flexion strengthening in addition to global cervical flexion (which focuses move on superficial muscles.) Focus the movement on tucking the chin and nodding the head move than taking the head forwards. These muscles are a akin to the rotator cuff of the shoulder by providing stability to the neck.
You are a magician, i just came from a high intensity high volume leg training and i was thinking about adding neck training beginning tomorrow. Thanks for the job Jeff
Neck training is super awesome but so many people chuckle whenever I do them, some even film me thinking it's something belonging in a fail compilation. Kinda disencourages me to continue with it, but I'm still doing them since it makes me YOKED AF.
This is the safeties way to train neck. Or do you want to do neck bridges like mike tyson and get neck surgery after 10 years cause you cant move your head?
@Kate Kuray This is why no one likes Québecers... ;) the word is in use by CANADIANS in both ENGLISH & FRENCH, but I suppose, Quebec started the first french speaking movement and isolated themselves, to the point of being hated by most of Canada for doing so. Glad to see this video, as an MMA fighter I have chronic neck pain and have been doing exercises to improve the neck muscles and a few of these I already do but now I’m glad to have a whole workout. Thank you Jeff, can’t explain how much help your channel has done for my martial arts career.
Yeah i am kinda shocked jeff would advise people to do them.... Does he look up the stuff he recommends to hundred thousands of people or does he not care anymore?

Just as a tip, for anyone who doesn’t want to wear a special Ed helmet for those neck exercises, resistance bands work just as well. Just keep your hands touching your head (like you do when doing a sit up) to keep the band in place or else working too heavy may cause the band to slip off your head and either smack somebody near you or slide down to your neck and suddenly your asphyxiating yourself
1:30 This is especially apparent with race drivers, and especially Formula One Drivers. Because the cars have so much downforce they can go through turns really quickly, making for up to 5Gs trying to push the drivers head off his neck in turns or when braking, which is why these drivers do a lot of neck training. At the same time drivers want to be as light as possible, because every kilo you don't have to carry makes the race car a little bit faster. This leads to drivers being relatively skinny with huge necks at the same time. You can't unsee it once you know it. :D
When I was younger, I was a swimmer and freestyle swimming with head rotation for breathing to both sides equally was a great neck training. After I stopped swimming, my neck definitely became slimmer.
Also really important for soccer athletes. Increases power when heading the ball and protects from concussions during head-to-head and ball-to-head contact
Want to give everyone a big fat warning about the exercises he recommends here. From doing the weighted neck extensions (10 lbs), I now have instability in the cranio-cervical area. I’ve been having symptoms like neck pain, heavy head, brain fog, tinnitus, and tachycardia. That was 3 months ago, have not been able to lift since. Be EXTREMELY careful when training your neck, you really don’t need to go very heavy with it. Also, if you’re training the back side, a harness is likely your best bet
I feel like I just got the same thing :( I have symptoms of cervical instability like tinnitus, dizziness, and nerve problems like tingling. I did heavy neck extensions/curls. Did your cervical instability go away? And do you know what it was caused by? Do you think it was just a ligament sprain that heals or do you think the ligaments actually became permanently loose? I'm worrying so much lol, I've stopped training but I don't want it to get worse
John Munson hey, yeah I’m still dealing with it. I’ve joined Facebook groups since then to look at other peoples experiences, one of these Facebook groups being for a stem cell procedure called PICL. The most likely cause is from hyperextending when doing the neck extensions (going past neutral), especially with weight. Jeff does mention that in the video, but not until the end… his video link in the powerbuilding program takes you to 4:54 for neck extensions, but then he goes back to talking about neck curls. He doesn’t mention anything about form until 7:40, after plugging in the neck flex sponsor. Not going to dump the blame on him as I think he has plenty of great content, but in hindsight he does a poor job of addressing safety in this video. You can train your neck isometrically without weight or even just by using your hands, but he doesn’t mention that in the video. Also, neck bridges are shit for your spine in the long term (Athlean-X has a video on this). I’m making this post in the hopes that someone else can avoid getting hurt after watching this video.
And to add to my last comment, there is a difference between extending the neck and extending the head. When people attempt the exercise (neck extensions), they tend to extend both. Jeff should make the distinction by specifying how to properly extend the neck. This is explained here: ruclips.net/video/nAWGkGRwFc8/видео.html
@@samiriskandarani5905 Thanks, this is so helpful. I'm still experiencing my symptoms. Did you see any doctors about this? I'm getting an MRI next week but I don't know if it will show anything. Do you know what in your neck actually got messed up, like a disc? And I would love to know the name of that facebook group, I"m really suffering :(
John Munson yeah I’ve seen so many doctors haha. My imaging didn’t show anything crazy. The x-rays showed a loss of lordosis (curve of the spine) which started from muscle spasms since the injury. The MRI’s showed a minor bulging disc (this is fairly common and is unlikely to be causing my symptoms, not pressing into my spinal cord or anything). An upright MRI with flexion and extension views is helpful in diagnosing it, though a standard cervical spine MRI is going to be wanted by most doctors. Would suggest seeing a neurologist to order them. I tried getting Jeff’s attention by sending him a message but didn’t get a response (he prob gets a million messages) so I think messaging him and spreading the word would be helpful as well. Wouldn’t wish this on anybody. Here is a link to the group: facebook.com/groups/ccjpicl/
People are here because they want big necks, it doesn’t have to be about aesthetic. Personally, I came here because in martial arts if you have a stronger neck you will be less likely to get a concussion from a powerful punch.
@yariel espinal you are right... i been debating if i should rob a bank .. but now reading this you inspired me ! Ima do it ! Who cares what people think just like you said. ..
Man this is possibly your most dangerous video yet, starting with even neck rotations for warming up without making sure to note that correct posture and shoulder/trap alignment should be had before any neck rotation!!! YOU CAN PULL A MUSCLE! ZING
@@mikeoxlong91111 sorry to upset you man, I just feel that it's a little irresponsible from Jeff to not highlight the critical relationship between posture and fibers of the neck that could lead to impingement if not correctly aligned before doing any of these exercises
I wrestled in high school and my neck was so much bigger than it is now due to all of the direct neck work we did. It’s crazy how easy it is to forget to work it if you don’t have a reason to. (Neck training is super important in wrestling because of tie ups and constant attacks)
bridges are a no-go imo. The spine is compressed the whole time, the rotation + extersion + compression is going to cause some trouble with your discs. They started giving me shooting pains and such. I would suggest you replace bridges with these sort of exercises to be safer. LIGHT WEIGHTS!!!
I use the lying hamstring curl bench. I reverse position, lying face down to the rear, slip my head under the padded bar (where your legs normally go) and with palms on the floor, simply raise my head for reps. Try it, works great.
My old gym used to have a 4-way neck machine. Plate loaded, 4-position seat to work your neck from different angles. I loved it. Unfortunately, my new gym doesn't have such a machine. I'm encouraging them to get one.
Never do neck bridges; they're anatomically unsafe and can result in a cervical disc tear or prolapse but the other neck exercises (flexion and rotation) shown by Jeff actually come first than shoulder shrugs and neck extensions. Strong upper traps but other weak neck muscles can result in an annulus tear and can be induced by the strong contraction of upper traps in a shoulder shrug if your other neck muscles are weak; telling from a rough experience after micro-tearing my C5 annulus due to weak other neck muscles but very strong upper traps. Warmup before weighted exercises is necessary as shown in the video. Obviously bad neck posture increases risk of neck injury.
This is the first time you came up on my feed. And it was the exact video I had been thinking of watching this week. Great exacting details and comparisons.

LOL.

It would have no effect at all on neck strength , theres negligible resistance in the water.

This is explained here:
ruclips.net/video/nAWGkGRwFc8/видео.html
People are too damn concerned about what others think of them. Just do you.
It’s the cherry on top of ur hard work!
People are here because they want big necks, it doesn’t have to be about aesthetic. Personally, I came here because in martial arts if you have a stronger neck you will be less likely to get a concussion from a powerful punch.

I wrestled in high school and my neck was so much bigger than it is now due to all of the direct neck work we did. It’s crazy how easy it is to forget to work it if you don’t have a reason to. (Neck training is super important in wrestling because of tie ups and constant attacks)
I’m a former pro wrestler.. and our technique was hours and hours of bridges , on top of the head hands off of the floor.
I’m now doing neck bridges in my circuit training that I learned in high school wrestling. They seem the way to go no need weights. What do u think?
@@ScottWarner86 yeah agree, no weight just do them regularly. Nothing toughens your neck like it and keeps you safe(r) from injury
bridges are a no-go imo. The spine is compressed the whole time, the rotation + extersion + compression is going to cause some trouble with your discs. They started giving me shooting pains and such. I would suggest you replace bridges with these sort of exercises to be safer. LIGHT WEIGHTS!!!
From Nippard to Neckard this guy has come far!

I use the lying hamstring curl bench. I reverse position, lying face down to the rear, slip my head under the padded bar (where your legs normally go) and with palms on the floor, simply raise my head for reps. Try it, works great.

Strong neck definitely helps with headaches, I noticed big improvements since I started some neck exercises
It only helps if the ache is caused by prolonged bad neck posture, in which case its not strength but physical therapy exercises you need.
