- Tommy Igoe is arguably one of the most influential drum educators of the past 20 years, with his iconic DVDs "Great Hands For A Lifetime" and "Groove Essentials" being some of his crowning achievements.
In this video, Tommy discusses modern drumming and how it's strayed away from the fundamentals of what makes a musical drummer. The internet and social media have created drummers who are constantly trying to out-do one another when it comes to speed and technique - but not when it comes to actual music. It's time to go back to simpler times and focus on the main role of a drummer!

Underrated comment
In my opinion, the most inspirational Drumeo lesson to date. Tommy has it all going on.. Musicality and Dynamics!
celtwats, I agree. Tommy Igoe is like Bruce Lee as an artist and instructor.
I cannot praise this man enough. The absolute best teacher. E. V. E. R.
Thank you drumeo.
This is the best lesson drumeo has released in a while. Great Job guys
Yas! First one I watched from start to finish in one sitting
I like Tommy Igoe; he's clearly a talented player, but more importantly he's a great communicator.
That's correct
Good to know there’s a lesson here. Just sat through the first 10:00. Still waiting.

Tommy Igoe is such an under appreciated drummer in most communities these days in terms of great drummers. His Groove essential lessons are some of the best
Oh! My drumming changed a lot after following his DVD "Great hands for lifetime". No pain in my wrist and fingers. Plus fluidity in strokes.
Couldn't agree more
He makes the whole approach seems so easy.
we're not playing the flute!
hahahahah
No more erectile dysfunction for me as well. Oh wait
@@1musikgeek well he told all of us to keep it as soft as possible...
Those might just be the most amazing toms I've ever heard.
@Filippo Motta How can you tell they're RCs? Last I knew, Tommy was using a PHX kit. Either way, that sound is blowing my mind. So deep and resonant, and they stand out so well in the mix. I'd love to know how they're tuned.
cghothands those are RC lugs on the shells.
They’re live custom
Yamaha Recording Custom.
Those are 100% Recording Custom drums. The lugs are new weighted lugs that are exclusive to the recording customs.
I got a lot out of this one and learned more about a drummer that doesn't seem to get the publicity he deserves. And a great engaging personality. One of best Drumeos yet. We live in an eighth note era or generation. How true is that?! A great teacher too. Getting inside a student's head is the key.
Tommy's dad was a lot better known - Sonny Igoe.
THE ATTITUDE EVERY TEACHER/COACH SHOULD HAVE! Love your craft, love your students. You are a great teach Mr. Igoe!
One of the best, lesson, interview, talking of not only drummer, but musician...all frases, groove that Tommy play is MUSIC. I want to play as Tommy!
I really love his philosophy on the teacher adapting to the students needs and not the way most teachers expect students to adapt to
teachers methods .Thank You Tommy 😁
Studied drums in college and Tommy's books helped me get in. I stopped for 5 years and am just getting back into it. I couldn't agree more with what he's saying about staying humble. I'm so rusty that I need to jam on Groove 1 for hours! This lesson made me want to dive back into Tommy's books. Thanks guys!
I allowed my Edge to expire..watching this just made me realize I need to renew..NOW..Tommy is unbelievable! Drumeo is unbelievable!
Welcome back, Bill!
Damn straight dude! Renew it!
That’s a world class drummer right there…holy cow. The fluidity in his hands is incredible!
I could listen to this guy all day...
best sounding drum kit I've heard on Drumeo. Maybe it's those mics... maybe it's the musician... something special happened here. Great music, great playing, and the sound is spectacular. Well done y'all and THANKS
I have been waiting for this for a VERY long time. Wonderful stuff guys.
I love Tommy's humor and attitude for the drums. He sounds like he would be a fun guy to hang with and learn from.
Tommy is incredible at what he does, one of the most tasteful drummers I've ever seen and amazing at sharing his love for the music. LOVED this one, thanks!
Tommy is one of very few drum teachers and clinicians that I follow these days. Love that he also touches upon human elements in the drumming, which is extremely rare to hear these days!
One of my favorite episodes so far!
GREAT HANDS FOR A LIFE TIME IS ONE OF THE BEST TECHNIQUE DVDS EVER RELEASED!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR IT!!!
What an awesome teacher, really like the way he explains his points.
This guys biggest asset is his confidence. He has it in bucket loads. The rest just happens.
As somebody who has restarted playing “MUSIC” after 40yr hiatus. This is so great. I thought I was past groove 1 but now really getting into it. Great video. Well done guys
Tommy Igoe!!! Your Groove Essential books are my favorite books to work on and use in my drum classes!!!
Thanks Drumeo for having him. And a podcast episode featuring him is also great to listen to. Lots of tips for being an educator and musician(not just a drummer).
I know there are dozens and dozens of videos from drumeo out there but this is the only one that I watched until the end. tommy igoe talks a lot of sense and I'm happy that drumeo finally caught tommy :)
I bought Groove Essentials years ago, So I consider Tommy Igoe my first real drumset teacher. Hes still amazing, and I still hold to the ideas he teaches in this course. Great Job!!
Such an amazing lesson. I've just bought the 'Great hand for a life time dvd' and am so keen to get stuck into it. When he went on to play "New Ground" at the end I was grinning the whole time. Such a fun piece - I'm currently preparing it for my exam at the end of the year.
I’m recently retired and decided to learn to play drums. Drumeo has become my Go-To for learning this instrument. There have been many excellent lessons I’ve watched, which have really contributed to my knowledge of how to play. This lesson with Tommy has, far and away, been the best!
To summarize, Tommy’s point “words matter” really coincides with my own life experience. It’s simply a common sense fact.
I just ordered Groove Essentials. I think (at least I hope) I’m ready to move to this next challenge. Thank you Tommy and as always thank you Jared and Drumeo!
Regards to you all.
Hi Tommy, I want to thank you so much. I am probably one of your oldest students. I started studying a year ago in October. I am now into it one year and ten months and I love it. I went every Wed to the New Britain, Ct Sr Ctr to the practice session and started learning from the regular drummer there. I pretty much practiced all the time. I will never forget when I got the five and nine str olé roll. I went to Guitar Center and saw your Groove Essentials kit. I paid for it and brought it home and watched it for a solid four hrs. Yes four hrs. When I saw Groove 87 on UTube, hair stood up on my ar ms. I was totally AMAZED!,! I am a former dance teacher and can call myself a dancer, not a drummer yet. Again, THANK YOU. I did play the tango the first time I heard it. Now I have a private teacher, Tom Moran of the Tirebiters band . Am doing well. Bettina. Oh. How is your wife and the twins? Are they girls, boys or one of each. Oh forgot to mention I got my very own drum set before the end of the first year, last August.
i love Tommy Igoe he’s super dope. one of my fav musicians cause he just keeps it real and simple..
Tommy Igoe's drumming is just gorgeous and wonderful to watch... amazing,.
I have to say out of all the drummers I’ve seen doing lessons online Tommy is by far the best, knows his stuff and seems like such a chill and nice guy, not to mention the fact his drumming is killing
The New Ground section of this video has to be some of the best drumming I've ever heard by anybody at anytime...total control of the tune in every way...complete command of his drums...simply outstanding...perfect.
I love Tommy Igeo on the drums. He plays so fluidly and just oozes musicality. As someone just starting out to learn the drums I love how he talks here about motions and playing what feels natural. So far many of the videos and lessons I have seen hammer in about technique saying you can't be a great drummer without great technique and while I'm sure technique is a major part of drumming I really love Tommy's playing to the music approach!
That last song was amazing. Very rare that a drummer playing to backing tracks actually sounds like he's driving the band. Talk about owning a song. Great guest. I bought great hands and my rudimentary chops are 500% better.
It's tracks he recorded with a band with the drumtracks removed. That might be why it sounds more organic.
the best teacher i've ever seen thanks thanks
Tommy is a great drummer as well as a professor... I really recomend his DVD's. After stupidly stoping to play for some years, focusing on just one thing has now improved my come back to drums and make me love them more now.
Holy crap that was one of the most EDUCATIONAL Drumeo videos I've seen yet. I've been a private instructor for 16 years now, and I learned a handful of nuggets that I can pass onto my students from this video alone! Thank you Tommy, and thank you Drumeo! Cheers!
I believe Tommy is one of the best drum teacher I have ever seen.
Just got his "Great Hands for a Lifetime". Really can't recommend it enough, Tommy is an amazing teacher.
Love Tommy Igoe! Thanks for posting this Drumeo!
Tommy's Groove Essentials DVD is so instructive. I have the first one and I really need to get the second one after hearing him in this interview. It should be on future pressings as a bonus because he brings so much just talking about theory in straight ahead no-nonsense conversation.
When he talked about playing all those great ideas at the same time, it reminded me of a teacher I had back in the 80's when I first was taking music classes in school. Every musician knows there are three elements that define a musical note. The pitch of the note, the volume level of the note and the length (timing) of the note. She told me those three elements define a musical note, but there is a fourth element that defines music, and that is silence. You can't possibly play everything at once so the spaces define the shape of music. Music melodies are played in scales and keys but style and shape are defined by when you are not playing. What and when you don't play are equally important. 16th note closed hi hats feel one way, and 8th note rides at the same tempo define the shape and feel of the music another way. Like flutter picking a guitar makes music feel different then long sustained chords.
At my first studio recording session the producer asked me why I was playing something. When I started trying to explain the part, he stopped me and said. No...... why? Light bulb moment. Why WAS I playing the part that way? Without him saying so, I realized I was overplaying the part. A listener doesn't care about how technical a part is. They just want to know how it makes them feel. Happy, sad, calm, excited. Less is (almost) always more. That's why Groove #1 is fundamental. It's the foundation of practically every Groove there is.
Amazing! Thanks for bringing on one of the people that first started me off as a drummer
Tommy is a very generous person who shares his work with the world…..and his experience with Brazilian guys who are fantastic drummers…..
Hi. Tommy is really one of the transparent teacher I ever heard! He have some visions and a great sense of how to learn and teach! Also give me calm and confidence. Thanks for make this video free for all. Bests energies for the drumeo family!
Tommy igoe, one of my favorite drummers. Thanks Drumeo and thanks for the great books and lessons Tommy :D

Man this lesson with Tommy Igoe was absolutely Excelsior ! Thank you Tommy and thank you very much Drumeo!...✌👑🤗
Best drummer of today in my opinion, highly intelligent, and smart enough to understand what people actually enjoying hearing.
Yeah man yes
One of my top drummers: Excellent performer, excellent teacher... I wish I could take lessons with him!
solid drumming such good flow and man he knows where one is all the time .. first class!
This is the man who made me a drummer I was playing for 10 years without lessons till I came across his DVD for beginners just how to hold the stick's ECT..
Thank you for sharing that lesson! Been waiting for this! Amazing masterclass/lesson! Thank you guys!
a very Refreshing presentation! Chemistry between Jared and Tommy kept the lull factor at bay. Nice job boys!
Thanks Drumeo, Tommy is great!
YES! Been waiting for this since I watched the tail-end of the live stream!
Tommy's DVDs are of the best tutorials if you wanna become a groovin' drummer. PERIOD!
This fella is an exceptional teacher. And his style is every positive and encouraging. Quite incredible.
Tommy Igoe have always been a drumming inspiration....
First 20 seconds are all a drummer needs to know😁😁😁
This and the Jason Sutter lesson on brushes have to be the two best drumeo lessons out there. Absolutely incredible.
His teaching has so many depth knowledge and know hows, is really impressed me in my mind..hope one fine day,I could opt for his online teaching....
Going to send a link to this to all my students. Thanks Tommy! You articulate what I try to say so well!
It's disgusting how clean his playing is 😂
Absolutely flawless technique and crazy speed, a name to be remembered
Glad to see you doing 8 on the hand and these other exercises. I’ve been doing these since drumline days and started teaching my students the same thing
This is a phenomenal lesson. Gets involved with the personality behind drumming and the mind you have to have while playing. He really is a great teacher to be able to get in the student's mind and alter the teaching style to fit. Amazing Drumeo!
He's the greatest drum teacher in the world. Because he's a musician.
He teaches music and inspires the soul, notwithstanding his mastery of technique.
I literally don't understand why some people would feel the need to "dislike" this video.
Its a FREE video, of a master musician giving countless nuggets of wisdom. Tommy's the man.
Wow, master. That rendition of Jazz Crimes blew my head clean off. New addition to my bucket list is to fly in to wherever Tommy Igoe is and spend a couple weeks learning from him
thats what a call a lesson... organical.. transparent.. and no mysticism... love it. congrats! thanks for make me know about this great drumer and such a nice person.
What a great lesson, what a great guy Tommy is.
Had a Skype lesson with Tommy. Mindblowing!! His concepts are pure gold!!
This is an absolutely FANTASTIC video. Tommy says something very important and it's about 'musical' drumming. Keep grooving with passion and play for the music 🎶🥁😎DC
That groove.. tears in my eyes.. I wish I could play like this! Oh well.. Back to practising!
Fantastic ! A musical aproach to the drumset versus a technical aproach ! Think like a musician, not a drummer...musicians think about the melody they are playing, most drummers just think technic ! Love it !!!
Your such a humble guy Jared! Look at what you have created for the drumming community Wonderful accomplishment.Keep up the great work!!
Makes so much sense, Thank you for sharing.
Tommy great video, your thoughts about playing musically are spot on, insightful. It's something I try to do, it's not about the flash, it's about the music and playing to it. Simplicity and style anchor the music. Thanks for a great lesson.
Tommy thank you so much best lesson I have see in ages. Groove essentials I acquired some time ago. Best books I have ever used 🙏🎶
oh wow phenomenal sound love thanks, Tommy Igoe
He is truly an amazing human being/musician/teacher drummer. I can regonize so many things of what he is teaching. He is absolutely a killer player. He sounds amazing.Thank you.
Thank you Tommy Igoe and Drumeo.
So much wisdom here, and Tommy always keeps it real. And wooooow, that SNARE and sound in general!!
Man was waiting this for so long. Since seeing Mr. Igoe's Instagram post.
I love this man!! Super awesome drummer and human!
4:09 I just love drummer smile exchanges. That might just be one of the greatest parts of drumming.
That little bounce he does at the end of a song gets me so hype
I love Tommy Igoe as I saw him do groove 87 (Lion King) when I started drumming three years ago. I got my own teacher weekly and off I went. After three weeks I got my own drum set and set it up in the senior apartments. Rockin it out! Bettina Beauchemin
my favorite drumeo video, absolutely great lesson!
Wow ! Totally opened up a whole bunch of great ideas and a great attitude,
Great lesson, great teacher. I loved the Manny Ramierez story. "Great Hands..." is something that I have been working through with the inmates I teach for a while now. Endless great ideas
Great video!Once again Drumeo has brought in an awesome talent for guys like me to sponge off of! Great way to show the "boring " rudiments in an applied manner!
very smooth and jazzy -well done..
I am totally digging his philosophy on music and learning! This is a great lesson. And I really like what Tommy had to say, not just play. That being said, I'm wondering when you will have Craig Blundell on.
this is the most important lesson you guys have ever released!
This was very much fun to watch.
I don't play drums. I'm a singer but I want to know more about groove and rhythm which will ultimately help my singing. I love watching him play and his attitude about drumming and music is just precious. i enjoyed the lesson and start to see from drummer's perspective. I'm still not very confident with rhythm. I enjoy brazillian music a lot. I'm familiar with it but just not able to understand it or fall on the right beat. Hopefully things will improve as I pay more and more attention to the drum... and the double bass... and all the instruments I work with.
Do you understand theory? If not, I highly recommend "The AB Guide To Music Theory (part 1) by Eric Taylor; it provides a good basic understanding of some of the fundamentals of Western Music, including rhythm theory and is only 100 - odd pages long.
@@maxmillman9477 Thanks. I'll be sure to check it out
Excellent lesson. Enjoyed it .
