I don't know how anyone can say that Bette Midler is a disappointment.. she's a awesome actress and she is great in this movie and Ed Asner is always a big hit... I've seen Gypsy with Natalie Wood and that was also fantastic!❤
I love her but I won't lie, she has said some outrageous things in the recent years. Like just recently she said that she wished she would've sued Lindsay Lohan for leaving her sitcom back in 2000. The girl was 13 or 14 at the time. I love Bette and I love her projects but I do worry she might be losing it mentally.
I would have thought Bette Midler was playing the role of Gypsy Rose Lee instead of her.mother. STILL I am going to watch it and see how it plays out!! Interesting!
I've seen this and the Rosalind Russel versions before, and only just now for the first time did it occur to me just how much of a narcissist Mama Rose is. It's like a textbook example. If this is actually anywhere near close to a "true story", she must have been an absolute nightmare as a mother. The character in the play/movie uses everyone around her until they wise up and flee her - and she never learns the lesson. She even asks Herbie why everyone winds up leaving her - only to conclude she's not the problem. Even at the end where she for a moment is so close to breaking through, Gypsy steps in to enable her delusions. I realize that's for the story - a "I realize I'm a selfish monster and I've destroyed my life and harmed everyone around me" wouldn't be a very snappy ending for a musical. It's kind of shocking when you step back and realize the actual story here is an abusive, narcissistic "devouring mother" who sacrifices everything - and everyone - to herself.
This was a good movie but it never will be like the one with Natalie Wood but it was practically the same from the beginning to the end.. just with different Stars... ❤

Yep that’s the whole point still you can’t help but feel bad for her and kinda admire her drive.
This was a really fun movie. The ending felt kind of abrupt though.
