  • Snake Eyes is that one stealthy ninja whose stealth, silence, and sword speak more than men armed with guns. Introduced in a toy line in 1982 by Hasbro, the eponymous ninja is finally getting his own spin-off after almost four decades, and we couldn’t be happier! He has also appeared in a comic series written by Larry Hama, who was actually working on an idea for a new comic based on Nick Fury’s son, Director of Shield. Hama used this premise and developed it around Snake Eyes. Snake Eyes features as a Vietnam war veteran who was friends with Storm Shadow before he became the Storm Shadow. The stealthy ninja goes to Storm Shadow’s Arashikage clan to learn martial arts under the likes of the Hard Master. Since the beginning of time, Snake Eyes has been portrayed as a fairly intellectual and considerate man who knew his way around people and difficult situations. For instance, he doesn’t shy away from letting others win if he feels that doing so would save them from shame and dishonor. He is someone who believes in losing a battle to win the war. However, his character and personality were never explicitly explored in almost any work of cinema or cartoon. With his stand-alone film releasing this Friday, 23rd of July 2021, Marvelous Video thought it was only prudent to give him the respect and appreciation that he deserves. In this video, we will discuss the movies, cartoons, and comics that have featured Snake Eyes and take a closer look at his personal and professional quests.

In the Cartoon they never mentioned it. The Marvel Comic did the best job of it. That he could not talk because of an Accident that happened when he was trying to save Scarlet's life, Also that Snake Eyes, Stalker and Storm Shadow fought together in Vietnam and the Special Forces. Over 2 issues the Story of Snake Eyes was told. Zartan killed the Hard Master but apparently was trying to kill Storm Shadow at the time.

Zartan was paid by Firefly to kill Snake-Eyes because Firefly was paid by Cobra Commander to kill Snake-Eyes, but due to a training match between Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow wherein Snakes let Stormy win, Firefly realized that he couldn't beat Snake-Eyes and was actually afraid to try to kill him. Zartan had chosen to renege on the deal but Firefly made him carry it out and using one of Stormy's arrows, fired it at "Snake-Eyes" not realizing that Snakes was observing the Hard Master mimic Snake-Eyes' own breathing patterns in one of the more obscure Arashikage techniques. Zartan killed Hard Master, Stormy saw him escape in a Cobra chopper flown by Firefly and Snake-Eyes blamed Stormy for Hard Master's death due to the arrow and Stormy running off in pursuit of the chopper which made it look like Stormy was fleeing the scene. For years Snakes hated Stormy all the while Stormy was working his way up in the ranks of Cobra to learn the identity of the man that killed Hard Master.

The director had the opportunity to do the most amazing movie and, instead, created something that will soon be forgotten. This was not a Snake Eyes movie. Snake Eyes has a 40 year history with GIJoe and his origin story, as created by Larry Hama, was amazing. Changing this so drastically and labeling it 'origins' was a disservice to the character and franchise.

    • @budgiecat2885

The worst part is G.I. Joe comics creator Larry Hama was involved (as Exec Producer). Now I know a lot of times in Hollywood, an "Executive producer" label can range from either 'one of the top head honchos' to "eh we just gave him/her this title to make them feel good as they still had no say or pull in the production so its just an honorary title' (kinda like Tae Kwon Do head Jhoon Ree giving President Reagan an honorary TKD black belt in the 80's or Marvel Studios always giving Stan Lee an 'executive producer' title on many of their movies despite him not having any say in them;), so we dont know how much power Larry had on the film if at all; we just know that he was part of it and he in an article, defended its decisions.

"Hama added that fans who claim to love the characters but take issue with updates like the changing of their race or gender “never really understood” what they were all about.
Speaking about the X-Men, Hama said the narrative entirely centered on social outcasts and marginalised people.
“The whole concept was about others seeking acceptance, and others being discriminated against. The whole anti-mutant crusade stuff, all of that was an allegory and they never got it [laughing]
“If they say the same thing about GI Joe, then they never got it either, because it was always about inclusion on all fronts”.
“With the family TV, my grandmother would come running into the other room and start shouting that there’s an Asian person on TV because it was so rare. We never saw any sort of representation”.
“So for me, to be making these tentpole movies with Asians in the lead is something that I never thought I’d see in my lifetime”.
Hama said that he had never really considered the race of Snake Eyes to be important until he was questioned about it years later.
“I was doing a panel and this Asian kid at the back of the auditorium raises his hand to ask a question and said, ‘So tell me, Mr Hama, why is the most badass ninja in the entire world some white guy?’ [laughing].
“I was floored! I didn’t know how to answer him. I thought, you know, there seemed to be almost no way to fix that within the comic context.”
While the casting of a blockbuster action film with an Asian-fronted cast is “huge” for Hama, he doesn’t believe that this, or any other incarnation of Snake Eyes, is in a sense the “true” Snake Eyes. For him, the “flesh and blood” portrayal of his characters as real people is the most important aspect of all.

@@budgiecat2885 While I do understand Mr. Hama's view, there is already a massive foundation for the Joe mythos that is not being considered. Snake Eyes' story is a tragedy starting in Vietnam and leading to inclusion by way of the Arishkage clan and finally the Joe team. Snake Eyes' story was always (in my opinion) that of the average soldier in Nam who was rejected and came home to either hostility or nothing. A reinvention of himself and finding his connection. It works for him to be a white male as this was the demographic that he represented. To take that away and rewrite it seems to be malpractice in handling the character in order to satisfy a social agenda. But just my two cents.

    • @budgiecat2885
      @budgiecat2885 3 года назад +1

@@ChapMeifan Yes you're right but as I stated (maybe not totally in the post you're replying to but in multiple posts) that this problem is compounded.
First you have Larry Hama's views as seen in the article interview. He is a former Vietnam war vet himself. So that's where we got all the wonderful knowledge of war time lingo and stuff. I remember reading on the back of some of the toys (of which he all wrote btw) "Warsaw Pact Small Arms" and "NATO" and having to ask my dad what those meant.
So it was really cool how in depth the toys got because f him;. This at the time resulted in Hasbro getting licensing from the U.S. military to use certain military terms, badges etc.
Now, a lot of that licensing is gone.
The licensing isn't expensive btw; just in case anyone tries to use that as an excuse.
So Hasbro of today has been trying to distance itself from the U.S. military as much as possible.
Even back in the 80's we saw elements of this when the toy line, comics and show were rebranded as "Action Force: International Heroes" with no mentioning of "G.I. Joe a Real American Hero".
And then fast forward to the first 2 live action G.I. Joe movies. I I barely remember them (other than being mediocre to bad), but I seem to recall them being more of the 'International hero" brand more so than focusing on them being a top branch U.S. military organization.
Especially when they had members with foreign accents indicating they were not from America.
Going back to Hama: in that article, we can see him talking about his acting past from 40 years ago when he couldn't get lead roles.
As well as his story about some Asian kid asking him why Snake Eyes was 'just some White guy', as if the Asian kid, who knew Larry created the character, was trying to throw some shade on him or some kind of guilt trip like 'hey fellow Asian person, how dare you make the worlds badass Ninja a white guy? Dont you know Ninja are supposed to be Asian? Why would you culture appropriate the Asian folklore badass to a White guy being that you are Asian? - you know that sorta thing. And he said for that he was 'floored' and didn't have an answer for the kid (whereas I woulda told that kid to shove off).
And now we fast forward to todays more PC progressive times especially in Hollywood, where even the Oscars now have Diversity mandates (4 of them where you need to meet 2 to be eligible; not that Snake Eyes is gonna be nominated for an Oscar or anything but you get the idea where HW is headed in all this)
and you see that it has been a trending thing for HW to push more diversity and inclusion in its movies in order to look like they are on 'the right side of justice' and are doing the right thing. Even though its all really just posturing and pandering and self congratulatory nonsense.
So what we ended up with is a focus on meeting said diversity quotas, as well as Hama finally seeing and being part of n Asian led cast which makes him feel proud since his past struggles of making into HW +40 years ago when that sorta thing was not as common for Asians; we have Hasbro trying to distance itself from the source material also for progressive reasons, all instead of trying to make a good story that respects the source material.

    • @budgiecat2885
      @budgiecat2885 3 года назад +3

@@big_lolo_01 The original toy line had backstories on the back of each figure that depicted their bio. These were all written by Larry Hama who created the original G.I. Joe comics run. So in that sense, both the toy line's story and the Marvel Comics story were one and the same.
Its the 80s cartoon that deviated since the cartoon came out after the comic and toy line.
The 80's cartoon also never showed how Storm Shadow in the comics eventually joined the Joes and it never showed his or Snake Eyes origin story, so if you didn't read the comics back then you were clueless to it and you probably just assumed Storm Shadow was always evil and one of Cobra Commander's right hand men (despite that being the total opposite in the comics).
We should also note that the 80's cartoon despite not fully following the comics storyline, did take some of its aspects into consideration, so if you go off that, then you can assume that the backstory and likeness of Snake Eyes is still one and the same despite the cartoon just not showing it.
It is only until 2003 (not explained in this video) where things took a total different turn as Hasbro hired Devil's Due comic publishers who then hired Larry Hama, to completely reboot the comics run under them with the newer rebooted G.I. Joe Reloaded.
Then from there on you had other rebooted storylines as shown in this video: Sigma 6, Resolute, Rise of Cobra/Retaliation, Renegades (not shown in this video), Death Game, and Snake Eyes movie
Compared to the original Marvel Comics storyline, none of those stories come close so I dont see the need to keep rebooting the storyline.

If it didn’t matter they would not change him from a red headed Caucasian guy to an Asian /Asian looking guy. So, the race does matter to the ones who made this film. It is now in style to change the race of very famous Caucasian characters that are fictional and historical from white to non white. And its (now) never the other way around.
Since he was race changed and it is in style to do so, I didn’t want to see it. He was one of my favorite g..I.jie characters like: blowtorch, duke, quick kick, gung-ho, and others.
That is the same reason I don’t want to see other films and didn’t want to see the screen: Nick Fury; heimdall, Valkyrie, bbc Achilles, bbc Zeus , firestorm, breaker and ripcord from gijoe :rise of 🐍 cobra, Hercules, acquaman, new jimmy Olsen from supergirl, and others.
This race and sometimes sex changing of characters in tv and film needs to end. People now have lawyers, money and talent to create new characters without replacing, thereby killing longtime historical and fictional characters who happen to be of European decent.

Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Literally my 2 most favorite action figures when was a kid in 80s. Was so so excited when heard they were making a Snake Eyes origin movie. But I should had known in today’s film industry seems childhood hero’s and fantasy growing up with so much history and fan power behind them doesn’t mean anything to Hollywood and the powers to be. Just seems franchises that we grew up with that we all love and cherish over decades and decades just go to Hollywood to die and become something that no one recognizes, likes, or happy with. Just shame when my 5 children and all my nephews and nieces watch this movie they will wonder why the father/uncle etc.loved a character who was a criminal backstabbing scumbag like they make snake eyes seem to be in this movie. Don’t even care they changed him from a white blonde headed man to Asian man but to make him the total opposite in honor, character, determination, patriotic all while running around unmasked and speaking. Then another kicker the last 2 min of the movie he actually puts on a iconic suit and helmet we would all recognize. Funny the trailer had more of him in that uniform then the movie..

Because they can't they screwed up Episodes 7, 8, 9 of Star Wars where they had a backstory from the Comics, and all those Novels from the time Return of the Jedi Ended to now. They screwed up the Transformers live action movies. By throwing more and more Transformers into play that were not around at the beginning. They kept changing the character names. You have Buster from the Comic, Spike from the Cartoon and Sam from the Movies all with the same last name allegedly. They used Sparkplug for both the Comic and the animated TV Show. The original Ratchet and Iron Hide figures are seen in Issue 1 of the Comic look very different then the later versions. Transformers was a 4 issue limited series. Then was expanded on with the Dinobots, and Shockwave. The Dinobots were built by the Ark when Dinosaurs still roamed the earth that is much better then the way the Cartoon explained it. The 2 Live action Joe movies were messed up. First you have Dr. Mindbender who turns out to be Cobra Commander. Then you have the Baroness who Duke was dating. I don't get to this day why in the Cartoon Duke was the head of Gi Joe when it was really Hawk. I liked the way the Characters got introduced in the Comic better then the way they showed up in the Cartoon. The Origin of Serpentor in the Comic I thought was better then the Cartoon as well. Some of the Characters from the Comic would have been ideal for the Cartoon. Such as Dr. Venom and Kwinn the Mercenary. In the Movie they threw in all these characters made them from different ethnic groups, countries then they were from. plus Killing off Duke just to make a movie because the two actors did not get along was a BS move.

It makes the most sense getting shot in the face trying to get to the helicopter and he was left for dead where he was found by a rice farmer and trained with the farmers son who later became Storm Shadow. I had the original unedited comic but it was changed to were he was brought to the US as seen in this video. Snake Eyes lost his sight and most of his face hence why he never spoke again. It apparently had to be changed because the original back story seemed to violent and cringe at the time of release and somehow was forgotten in history.

You are missing a comic from around 1985. The series starts with the Vietnam storyline you showed. A few comics later it jumps forward in time. This next issue was super cool because it was heavier paper than usual, more vivid color, more pages and was totally silent. The pannels had no conversation bubbles. Snake Eyes in his iconic black uniform infiltrates a Cobra command center to free a Joe team member held captive. The team member turns out to be Scarlette. On the way out Snake Eyes has a fight with Storm Shadow. They battle a bit and Snake Eyes gives Storm Shadow a blow that makes him fall to his knees. Snake Eyes grabs a backpack jet glider and flys away with Scarlett. As they fly away it shows Snake Eyes having a torn sleeve and a tattoo under it. The last pannel is Storm Shadow standing and watching them fly away with a torn sleeve and the same tattoo.
Then the issue you showed of Snake Eyes taken in as a kid by the ninja clan happens.

Gi Joe started as a toy line. In the toyline, snake eyes was recon special ops. And all classified. That was it. Sort of a mystery man soldier.
It wasnt until the comics did his backstory get created and they made him an "american ninja". Perfect marketing move and he was quickly the most popular joe character.
The cartoons ran with that story as well.
With the popularity of kungbfu and ninja films, it didn't take a genius to understand how to gain market share. Its no surprise snake eyes and storm shadow were the most popular and bottest selling toys in their lineup.
They even created a chinese character named quick kick who was a kung fu master.
So we can fight and bitch and moan about snake eyes's ethnicity but in the end, it was whatever the writers wanyed him to be. Why? Because the origunal toyline had him as classified and gave zero background info.
Personally, i don't care. In the new movie, hes haf white so now some of you know how asian americans feel when we get half white actors playing roles of asian ethnicity. Whats that line? "Get over it. Its only acting".

The correct "origin" of Snake-Eyes is, naturally, subject to when one was introduced to the character and whichever version you like most. The new movie, which as been in development longer than I care to think about, is about as grounded and realistic as any of the others. Its worth noting that Snake-Eyes' distinct all-black outfit from the 1982 toy line wasn't how he was supposed to appear (he was supposed to be an all-camo paintjob), but was done as a way of saving money on the production costs. The fact it took off so wildly was an unexpected bonus.
Additionally, his ninja background was a case of ret-conning, a consequence of events in issue #21 of the "G.I. Joe" comic, originally published in March 1984, which also introduced Storm Shadow and his red-clad ninjas. The issue, titled "Silent Interlude", was completely with out dialogue or text boxes, and its last two panels showed the Arashikage tattoo on both Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes's right forearms. The intended implication was that the pair were linked by some past association, which naturally led to the latter becoming a ninja where before he was simply a well-trained commando.
Regardless of whichever origin is the "correct" one, the character remains one of the most compelling (and at times complex) creations to come out of this franchise.

    • @MerensWorld
      @MerensWorld 3 года назад

The Marvel Comic Origin story told a few issues after issue #21 made sense to me, You actually had Joes, Cobra, Innocent bystanders get killed in the Comics, Joes bandaged up, shot, etc. Rarely in the Cartoon did anyone get hurt Duke twice three times if you count the movie. The Cobra Commander Story is much better to me in the Comics also. Plus the whole creation of Cobra Island in the Cartoon it just magically appears. Silent Interlude was a tough issue. That was basically the same Mountain Fortress from the Cartoon.

    • @YankeePendragon

@@MerensWorld Comics have the advantage of being able to draw a story out over several issues, thereby able to go into events with greater detail and allowing them to spend more time in exposition (without necessarily boring the reader). "Silent Interlude" was truly groundbreaking because Larry Hama's script and pencils told a multi-strand story solely through single-panel action, a feat I can't recall appearing elsewhere (or at least with equal power as Hama did a 'sequel' of a sort in "G.I. Joe Yearbook #3" and there was a silent issue early in the IDW 'rebirth' series).

I rather they stick to the original snake eyes storyline than reboot snake eyes. It should be Ray Kim play the role not Henry Golding 🙄 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's actually Ray Park, not Ray Kim.

Growing up in the ’80s, I was more of a Transformers, Thundercats, He-Man, Voltron, and Silvershawks than a G.I. Joe fan. I never really knew who was who, especially between the two ninjas. So the origin in the comics is that Snake Eyes was a white guy who learn the ninja martial art skills. With all the SJW and Cancel Culture, the new Snake Eyes decided to use a mixed Asian dude to play the titular character, and the film is no better than all of its previous G.I. Joe live-action adaptation? Why filmmakers not have a great story first before making the damn movie?

They're obsessed with shoving radical politics than making good storytelling and characters.

@naitethagr8 They simply don't care about race-swapping or gender swapping to fit their radical agenda.
