Neural foraminal narrowing, also known as foraminal stenosis, is a condition that results when the spinal nerve roots are compressed. These nerve roots run through small openings at every level of the spinal column, called foramina. When these foramina become narrowed (stenotic) they can compress the nerve roots causing symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness and or weakness along the areas served by the nerve.
Foraminal narrowing usually affects a single nerve root on one side of the body, although some patients may experience bilateral foraminal narrowing (bilateral neural stenosis), caused by nerve compression on both sides of the spine.
Foraminal stenosis can be very frustrating due to the pain and discomfort that it may cause when getting into certain positions or engaging in certain activities. Unlike many other back or neck conditions, most conservative foraminal stenosis treatment options, such as pain medications, may not be of much benefit. Some may choose to modify their current lifestyle, but others may opt for spine surgery in order to get treatment for foraminal stenosis.

Oh gosh I wish I could see a specialist like you in Australia. I have spondylolithesis, severe foraminal stenois one the left side and moderate on the right at s1/l5. When you described the pain levels and symptoms and walking up the stairs I was like yes!!! It has been so hard to get anyone to take me seriously, I keep telling doctors that I feel like my legs give up when I’m walking up the stairs and they just look at me like I’m crazy. I have just turned 40 and feel like I should be able to things like climb stairs, but they say I’m too young for surgery.
I also have a herniated disc at this level. I am tired of being unable to walk properly
@BeeJ82 we are sorry to hear of your pain. We work with a lot of international patients who come to have their conditions addressed by Dr. Bonati and his team. In fact, a lot of our patients come to us after being told nothing more can be done for them, or their doctors were not taking their condition nor pain seriously. Please fill out the form in the link provided and we can have a patient advocate reach out to you: www.bonati.com/contact-us/

Thank you Doctor for that very good explanation.
I don't take pain meds except for Tylenol 500s. I take Gabapentin. I have severe bilateral neural foraminal narrowing & left neural foraminal narrowing. No one wants to do surgery because I'm 52 and overweight 😢😢😢I live with pain everyday. It's so depressing.
Great presentation thank you!!!
Excellent video. Excellent specialist informative. I have had a bad fall. 7 months ago. Had leminectomy some 50 ago. Now dropped gate left side. Can’t walk much have walker. Over how I am very bad groined pain, buttocks both sides both thighs Dr advise need L4/5 fussion with spacer. Pentical stews and rods just very worried 72 I have stenosis. Legs just go on me now I have had 5 falls over 7 months. Also C5,6&7 bone spurs both arms hands affected. On waiting list at a public Hospital in NSW Sydney. PAIN is out of this world burning meds are some help however they don’t always work. If I have lower area where spondylitis is what about top C area 72 I have can’t sleep much what a life.😊
So much good information thank you.
Of course! Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help.
Thank you so much for this information. I see a surgeon Thursday for L2 thru S1 pain
You are welcome, please contact us if they recommend a fusion. Too many people are getting fusions nowadays for conditions that we can fix the truly minimally invasive Bonati Spine Procedures
@@BonatiSpine I will and hope they do not suggest this. All 4 disc have bilateral nerve damage
Thank you so much.😊
I just got my mri results and I have severe foraminal stenosis left side of my neck C4 C5 and moderate on the right. In addition to my neck problems I also have narrowing in my Lumbar as well and am about to get another mri in a couple weeks and I have spinal stenosis on my central canal in my thoracic that is moderate. I am considering surgery on my neck it’s gotten to the point it’s bothering me on a daily basis and the radio frequency ablation did not work last month!
Get that surgery on your neck and back to stop the pain and damage to your spine before you are paralyzed.😢
You may be a good candidate for cervical and lumbar disc replacement.❤
@@jeffreyosborne6012 I just read more about Foraminal stenosis and your right it could especially when it’s severe could lead to paralysis! That is a terrifying thought in addition to that I’m in a tough spot with my job been a bellman for 16 years and unfortunately it’s exacerbating my condition and I’m currently on a fmla leave of absence and supposed to go back to work tomorrow 😬. I see my pain management Dr today to go over the mri results and I definitely have my concerns especially with my job and being that I’ve had daily symptoms as of late the last thing I want to do is exacerbate my condition more. Had my first physical therapy session today have more appointments coming up hopefully it helps but as of now I’m leaning towards having surgery considering that it’s gotten serious!
Is he radiologist?
L4_l5 and l5_s1 bilateral foraminal stenosis with minimal retrolisthesis. Noone can seem to help me. I also have sciatic painand numbness down right leg buttocks and feet. Also have facet hypertrophy.
We're sorry to hear about your pain. Please, call 888-343-0082 to allow one of our surgeons to review your case and to see if you're a candidate for the Bonati Spine Procedures.
What does “multi level anterior osteophytes of thoracic spine” mean?? I stay in severe pain 24/7. I have problems in my thoracic spine and lumbar spine. I also have 8 bulging discs and neural foraminal stenosis.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO RELIEVE MY PAIN? I’m a 39 year old male.
THANK YOU
Osteophytes refer to bone spurs in this case in your thoracic or mid-back area of your spine. Neural foraminal stenosis refers to narrowing in the canals through which spinal nerves exit the spinal canal, which can cause nerve impingement, commonly known as pinched nerves. is fusion my only option for a pars defect on both sides at S1 L5? That’s what the surgeon in Boston is telling me.
Our surgeons can usually fix most of the problems we see without resorting to spinal fusions. We can have our physicians review your MRI studies to let you know how we can help you. Please visit www.bonati.com/contact-us
My MRI says I have bilateral neural foraminal stenosis L5 S1 with compression on the left nerve whixh is causing numbness in my left leg. I also have LLD due to my left hip being hiked up. I don't have any disc bulges or degenerative disease. Could the stenosis be caused by the hip hike causing the compression?
We can have our physicians review your MRI studies to see what is causing your symptoms. Please visit www.bonati.com/contact-us
Can my lower lumbar strain on my right side over time have caused my Neural Foraminal Stenosis on right side?
For answers to your question, call 888-343-0082 to allow one of our surgeons to review your case and to see if you're a candidate for the Bonati Spine Procedures.
I have recently had an MRI that reveals severe foraminal stenosis at L3 -L4 (left foramina), L4-L5 (bilateral stenosis), and L5-S1 (bilateral stenosis):
Question: my symptoms (besides LBP) is restricted to severe left foraminal neuralgia. Do you think that I would be a candidate for endoscopic surgery?

Do you read MRIs to give a second opinion?
We can have our physicians read your MRIs to determine if you are a candidate for the Bonati Spine Procedures. Do you have your MRIs available?
