SCP-423 - Self-Inserting Character
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 сен 2024
- SCP 423 is a Safe Class anomaly also known as Self-Inserting Character.
SCP-423 has no physical form. It appears to exist entirely within textual narratives. It was discovered in a used book store in Texas in a copy of Tom Sawyer.
SCP423 is able to enter textual narratives, inserting itself as a minor character.
SCP-423 is able to move from one narrative to another voluntarily, provided the two works are within one (1) meter of each other.

Fun Fact: SCP-423 was cross-tested with SCP-978 (Desire Camera) and the result photo was a room filled with books with a person reading at one of the corners, burying himself in the book he's reading to the point you only see his hands.
Did you know that the camera was also tested on Cassie it showed her in 3D rendition working on a car
Fred sounds like such a chill guy. All he wants is to be part of an entire library of books he loves
He's just a bookworm who ceased to have a physical form
I wonder what would happen if they would've taken a picture of scp 682 or scp 173
@@TheEggyOne they did 682 it showed him on top of a defeated Roman legion which had gone missing in history.
@@god.allah. I thought it was 682 standing on a pile of SCP researchers bodies, with the body of the one who took the picture in 682’s mouth
Fred is a wholesome guy, just wants to read books but can't in the normal way.
Give the man his own library while testing isn't happening, or once testing has concluded.
I think they would, but considering they want to catalogue any changes Fred makes, they would have to come up with some way for a book to automatically make its own digital copy of the edited text, which I can’t see happening without anomalous methods being used, and that could potentially be risky and could either endanger Fred or duplicate his effects
I'd be a little jealous of Fred honestly. By being a minor character, you avoid all the drama and sometimes torture of a main character. Fred is just enjoying a book up close and in person (without the danger). I'm betting he could die in a story, but is able to avoid danger by staying a minor character.
Wait a minute, if Dr. Mann is in the article, and the article was Written By Dr. Mann, does that mean Mann is a character who self-inserted into is Own Article! 🤯
@@Unknown-br1uf that happens with literally so many characters. A lot of the big recurring characters like dr bright, gears, clef, kain, etc, are literally admins for the scp website irl.
@@Red_Ryry It was a Joke pally, on account of it being overly Meta 😅
Unlike most self-insert OCs, Fred is incredibly humble. Seems like the bro just wants to experiance being in a good story and wants to watch the action without much attention on himself.
I wonder, how would he react to being in a story that supposedly had only a single human survivor in the story's world?
Maybe he'd be like a cockroach or dog or something
You would have to be careful to make it impossible for more than one survivor to exist, although I would think that to answer such a question it would be best to just ask Fred what would happen
An introvert litearray scrambler
He would probably be the sole surviving dog. :)
Kind of reminds me of a book my dad liked where a lady was a detective in real life and then became a detective in books and had to solve crimes to prevent the narritive from getting messed up.
During an 'accidental' cross test, it was proven that Cassie can 'see' Fred when the two share a book or art together, with her 'animated' nature allowing Fred to actively create word balloons for himself in a similar method to Cassie herself. Research Staff are reminded that while the two are friendly towards each other, barring the incident with the car that seemed to make Fred feel less 'manly' by his own admission after watching her work on it, they are in no way a 'romantic' pairing, and we should not encourage such. This is the Foundation. We Secure, Contain, Protect. We don't Wine, Dine, and Romance.
...now I'm imagining Cassie wearing a wedding tuxedo while carrying fred, who is in a wedding dress, in a princess style way
I wish there was a WDR foundation now...
I hope they eventually meet again.
Yea I reckon you got a pretty fuckin solid point there. I'm behind it.
@@creativecritters6791 they’ll meet again don’t know where don’t WHEN but I know they’ll meet again some sunny day
I feel bad for any researchers actually called Fred. Any work they do would just be explained away as "SCP-423 is messing with reports again!"
They probably make him use a nickname or last name
But 423’s edits always disappear after leaving the writing he enters, right? If the researcher’s work stays, and later testing is done with 423, that would verify the researcher’s work as real.
@Hitler Loves Anime e
yes
@Hitler Loves Anime dang man this like the 5th comment I seen of U askin SOME1 to reply to u😂
I like how the creator of SCP-423 also just pulled a self-insert
I laughed so much at the “ow, ow. Bad idea”
It's such a good statement because of the indication that it somehow had an actual, "physical" affect and pain to the entity. Just really cements its consciousness/humaness.
Dude calls himself ruggedly handsome in his documentation lmao
“I dont deserve to be in the spotlight”
YES YOU DO FRED, YOU DO DESERVE THE SPOTLIGHT
This SCP reminds me of that one time that a translator wrote his own version of Dracula and passed it off as a straight up translation, and then it took people like 100 years to figuree out what he had done
Who?
@@AztecCroc A writer translated "Dracula" into Icelandic, but about a century later it was figured out that the writer had drastically changed the work. Basically the writer made his own Dracula fanfiction, and passed it off as an official translation before being caught.
A little bit of tomfoolery
@@Baffle145 he did a little trolling you could say
I suppose there is an argument to be made that Dracula itself is a work of fanfiction, as the author basically took a bunch of Romanian folklore and other horror and literary elements and created a Frankenstein’s monster (pun intended) of a story out of it. Before Stoker wrote Dracula the story, there was no such thing as Dracula the character.
A self-conscious meta-trope? Fascinating.
What's a "meta-trope"?
@@norwayzs1014 Fred would be the trope. And he's metaphysical in nature.
@@norwayzs1014 Meta trope is something or someone that exists outside the tangible reality, and is often (though not always ) aware of its/his status. Fred for example is an story book character that is aware he is an story book character.
Yes yes very fascinating
Thanks boys my question exactly
I'm envious of this SCP. He's able to enter into any story and experience it in first person.
Man that'd be fun, something similar to having a very active imagination that bars the need for thorough examinations.
Wasn't there also an experiment with 423 where they introduced him to a printed copy of a game's code and then copied the code back into a computer?
All I can see is one where 423 got transferred into a C# “Hello World” program, where it made comments about certain aspects of code being confusing. It also got transferred into a full book about C#, where some male characters’ names were changed to Fred, all puzzles were filled in, notes start appearing, and some typos were corrected in code snippets. 423 then went back to its journal and showed an interest in using Visual Studio, and was fully able to understand the C# coding language. 423 has a desire to learn.
Wait I found the one you’re talking about, the game was “The Secret of Monkey Island” and the result was:
“An NPC named Fred appears near the small building at the pier on Melee Island. When spoken to, the player is presented with a dialogue tree. Questioning him on his backstory reveals that he tried and failed to become a pirate. It is mandatory to recruit him on the ship's crew for the second chapter, where he joins the mutiny. Subsequent cutscenes have him present with the rest of the crew.”
423 commented that it was like a choose-your-own-adventure book, which is really interesting. “Let me know if you find any more.” Is one of the comments that 423 left in the journal.
@Hitler Loves Anime do you have the source code to gta V/do you think the acquisition of it would even be approved?
@Hitler Loves Anime why do you beg people to reply to you
He also appeared in persona 5
I have 2 questions.
1. Has Fred ever been cross-tested with the "A Hero Is Born" book? Could he even get into the book? If he was presented with it before someone else read it, would the book describe Fred's dream? If he was presented with it after someone else read it, could he see into their dreams?
2. Has Hand Drawn Cassy ever been cross-tested with Fred? Would more words appear on the journal that Fred is on to talk with her, or would someone need to write her questions into his journal?
If either of these have already been cross-tested, are either of them friends with Fred? Like how 049 is friends with 035 and the Lunantic?
I think I heard once that 423 was accidentally cross-tested with Cassie? I just remember they could perceive each other, or something
Something tells me Fred prefers more understandable power systems.
Also... damn thats a humble self insert
Jesus christ. How do you know it is past time for a study break? When you see there’s a new SCP video, decide to pop over and check it out, and immediately recoil in horror at…
THE SELF INSERTING CATHETER.
This made me laugh out loud xD
that sounds horrific
oh NO!
I'm laughing like an idiot in front of my roommate. Thanks for that 🤣🤣🤣
@Hitler Loves Anime because of dyslexia haha
I wonder what would happen if they scanned Fred's responses before he jumped to another narrative, would the digital file be affected ? The data seems to suggest otherwise
well other copies of the story were unaffected by freds jumping so a digital copy should also stay untouched
Since the anomaly doesn’t effect electronics doesn’t it not matter?
I like Fred. He’s a ruggedly handsome cool guy.
Me: Got your nose buried in a book lately?
SCP-423: Always.
What would happen if Fred went into a book of a different language? Say, a French or Spanish version of a book he’s already been in, and a French or Spanish book he hasn’t been in? Would Fred be able to understand the language? Theory says yes. Also, the different language should be one the researchers understand. If this works, what about a story written in a conlang, or a constructed language?
What if it was a made up language, or something that's unsolvable? Could they use fred to solve the zodiac killers cipher?
"Fred can't understand this"
@@WaallyOne no
Considering how he reacted to braile, unless the book was about learning the language in question, I think he would just be very confused and hop back to the journal
@Hitler Loves Anime meme: No, I don’t think I will.
As an unarmed security officer, I can absolutely relate with Agent Curren. Most sites I go to, I'm only there so the client can check a box off on their insurance papers; and as a result, I end up just being there not having really anything I'm supposed to do except be there.
Sounds like my kind of job :)
Fred's the second SCP I read about, and he's one of my favourite ones. He's just plain humble and likes to read.
I find it interesting that he says "I never deserved to be in the spotlight" it might be suggesting a backstory (pun unintended) to this story hopping man
Or maybe he's to worried about being labelled a Gary stu and taking stuff away from The characters in the story like I am with my self inserts I'm an girl so it'll be Mary Sue but same difference.
@@eternallylearning2811 I feel like tht still suggests a backstory though. Why would he want to be in the background? Works of fiction like this need to have reasons for a character to feel a certain way
@@cornerIV Well I guess his backstory would be same as mind constantly watching other self inserters selfishly warp the storys because they wanna be horny and important its why I don't self insert myself much and when I do it's is would be alot like how he does it scared of adding to the stereotypes of people self inserting.
Actually, Fred is amazing find and should be hired by the SCP foundation. If he does well, he should be put on the O5 council eventually. Fred might not be useful for wrestling physical hazards like scp-682. However, he appears to be at least partially resistant to cognito hazards and memetic hazards that cripple human researchers. He could go into scp foundation reports where the content is suspect because of cognito hazards and fix inaccuracies. Also, because of how he exists in a bubble of fiction, reality shifting anomalies are likely to overlook him. He might be one of the few entities in existence aware enough of a reality shifting situation to raise an alarm. Finally, the members of the O5 council shouldn't be massive threats themselves that might need to be neutralized at a future date. Fred fits this criteria as well.
Honestly, a Tale or something with Fred and Casey hopping around corrupted media and fighting memes would be pretty great.
@@twofortiel The best part is that you'd pay them by writing stories about wealthy towns where the wealthiest person in town just died leaving his entire estate to a mysterious stranger named "Fred" whose appearance was prophesied. Don't forget about the bar adjacent to the Fred's new property where young hot women (or men if Fred swings that way) congregate. All of the bar patrons are interested in either long term relationship or hook ups depending on Fred's preferences.
uhh, Murphy Law?
Good old Fred. There is a tale in which they cross tested him with SCP-085 (Hand Drawn Cassy). By drawing an advertisement billboard on her canvas, Fred could insert himself into that and then communicate with Cassy.
How did that work out? Did they enjoy the interaction?
@@Weretyu7777 They did.
I wanna know what dragon type he'd be in Wings of Fire. Probably a Rainwing that stays invisible most of the time, or maybe it changes based off of the book, like in the first book he'd be a skywing observing the arena, the second a seawing guard, ect. Only the foundation would know, but I get a feeling he'd like Chameleon
Yeah more then likely a rainwing
@@Dinonuggie399 what about a rain/sea? Rainwing color change and the ability to breath underwater
Probably a nightwing because most of them are just side characters.
@@darkstalker3855 says Darkstalker
The fact that I can clearly see Darkstalker replying to this concerns me.
Personally, I think it would be dependent on the book he is in.
Edit: Looking at things, it seems like SCP-423 is fine with his name having little to no resemblance to "Fred" and merely prefers using it (and names alluding to it) for his own convenience, so my theory that he may be limited to certain tribes due to their naming systems was inaccurate.
this was an oddly wholesome one. an anomalous entity with no desire other than to play a small part in various stories :) This one made me smile.
SCP-423 A friend and a big fan of fantasy adventures that experiments the world of interactive stories in order to learn and experience new things. It might be a great helper in decoding or solving different story puzzles if given the chance and training, but mostly it's an adventurer entity from the realms of story jumpers. Later it might be a great story-teller guide protector if he gets mature or eager to help, anyway, it's really enjoys life adventures and it reminds us of the thrill of the abundace voyage of literature.
Exorcist Angel ^3^
Fred, like many of the BG characters of MLP:FIM, has made his way into my heart with his humbleness and simplicity and I love him now.
All the thumbnails look deadly
Even when it is a harmless SCP
Best keep him away from 682’s file…I bet even the fictional lizard could adapt, maybe even adapting the file and giving us a 2nd 682
I love how hes so humble and just wants to "read" books
This sounds like every FanFiction writer’s wet dream. We’ve all had ideas of self-insert stories.
including just, showing up to hang out with a random character talking about random shit lololol
Except Fred does not want the front and center, just a witness to the story.
Ummm no sorry from my experiences usually when others self insert the wet dream is literal they are not happy just to watch most of the time.
Wet is indeed the correct word if they had that kind of power.
There were more tests done for this SCP by having it enter the screenplay of Inception and the written code of Persona 5.
When you're obsessed with fanfics that you became a fictional character that rewrites story masterpieces form within the book
Interesting Tidbit: Fred was actually assigned to find SCP-4028: an anomaly that was supposedly Don Quioxte invading other narratives
Oh I’m gonna have to check that out! :D
This is an amazingly wholesome SCP ☺️
I kinda wonder if Fred can see how the world is in those books. The characters and how they look and describe them. Even though they're described in said books, it'd be cool to have him talk to a forensic artist.
Or if he's able to move around away from the main characters, like in the HP one, would he be able to interact with others? Or is he confined to the main characters story?
Bestselling comic artists:
Did that queen in the last story look like Wonder Woman to anyone else?
Dd
If all dimensions are possible. It seems to me that Fred is a dimension hopper, by choice. This is how we can communicate with it. That's my thought and enjoyment of it
Honestly, these videos would be incredible in podcast-form. The voice acting does work without video, and the videos would be more accessible out in public, when you can’t whip out your phone. Just an idea, keep up the great work!
I love how Dr Everett Mann inserted himself into an scp about self inserts, very meta
I think they should go back and get into more detail on why the O5 council themselves stepped in on what seems to be such an unimportant SCP. Two meta aware characters but only one that can freely travel without ability to bring those universes powers or injuries with him, i doubt Fred could bring another whole being with him. Idk it seems kinda rushed over toward the end, i hope theres a followup
It's always good to know I'm not the only one who feels that way about James Joyce and his work.
I do the same thing Fred does, introduce myself into the story as a secondary character in my mind rather than insert myself into the protagonist.
I absolutely love this SCP as a avid reader myself
I feel Fred and SCP-1230, the book keeper, would enjoy witnessing some fresh new tales in a fantasy setting. Fred seems respectful enough to let the dreamer enjoy the spotlight.
My man is much more chill than all those OCs that become the center of everyone's attention
Considering what kind of things the foundation usually deals with, this is incredibly benign.
When given a document of D-Class scheduled for termination, Fred altered it to say "Scheduled for *Release*, scribbling "That's just mean" in the margins.
A researcher even praised Fred for his morality.
This is actually Kinda wholesome (atleast compared to other SCP stories)
you guys keep finding unique ways to showcase these SCP's. thank you for these videos
The power of plot convenience.
What if there's a book that says
"Once upon a time there was a hero, he was looking for an unsuspecting fellow that if he did exist, would be named fred" and then the rest of the story is a tragedy due to the lack of a fred? Would that fred take the role of the fred the story asks for should the story pose no risk to him?
Edit: Seems Fred's story pretty much sums up what would happen.
But what would he call himself in that book?
@@jacobsheehan9715 In Freds story he took on the role of a background character rather than playing the role of himself.
Why does the Foundation need an archive with non-anomalous copies of books like Tom Sawyer? If it's for staff then it's not an archive it's just a library
If nothing else, for comparing possibly anomalous books to. Also, if a biography or history text shows changes it could indicate a reality alteration.
I don't think I've ever seen an SCP with this degree of humility. Even when directly offered the opportunity to be the star of the show, he respectfully declines.
It's always nice to see that not all the SCPs are evil, dangerous monsters. Fred's just a guy who likes a good story, but can only enjoy them by being IN them.
"Ow, ow, bad idea"
Poor thing thinks he being punished
I like how the thmbnail makes Fred seem sinister, but he's actually pretty friendly.
I honestly want to see Fred and SCP-2786 interacting with eachother. Now THAT would be a story.
Imagine writing entire fanfic anthology for Fred, including fantasy, sifi, fantasy sifi, mythology and real world lore
not me crying over fred saying “i never deserved to be in the spotlight” YES YOU DO FRED YOU DESERVE TO BE THE MAIN CHARACTER
Fred was surprisingly delightful. Stage fright/public speaking are amongst the worst fears people (now SCPs included) have.
I thought this was gonna be like the Rick and Morty parasite that modifies memories to make you think you've known them all your life.
My question is why didn't the book hop to other books in the book store.
It could've so easily done it.
he was probably still '''reading''' it
or knew what he was and didnt want to be noticed
How do you know he didn't? Who knows how long he's been in that library? He's likely been jumping from book to book for many many years even within that library. He was probably in a book when he was coincidentally found and studied until he was placed in a 1 meter radius of another book.
My bad, I worded my question wrong I meant to ask why didn't the book jump to another book when caught? That would probably infer if the book probably had an iq then it would be low.
@@basicallyiamsloth6085
This is implying that he had a problem with being "caught". It seemed to me it didn't seem to care or notice. It usually jumps into any random book within its range after few minutes. It also seems to be fine living in the journal since the journal format allows it to convey it's thoughts and the foundation can give it access to more books to explore.
Aww, Fred is so humble :3
I like him xD
SCP Foundation: Here 423, your own story! Enjoy!
SCP 423: Oh stop it, guys! You're embarrassing me! Gonna make me blush!
Wow did anyone noticed that the author of this SCP put his name when the head for testing was introduced?
The fact that hunter voices these makes it so much better
I see you're experimenting with more researcher likenesses. Nice work!
So this SCP is basically those fanfics where they tell the plot and dialogue of a movie verbatim except the OC is included in minor parts.
Ah yes paperwork
Lot of Paperwork, even at the SCP Foundation
Surprisingly, I think this is my favorite SCP I've ever heard of
"When offered a written account of the final season of the hit series 'game of thrones', Fred chose to make himself into a character named 'Charlie', and raised his hand in one very prominent scene, completely unaware that this one scene had saved the entire final seasons from being an absolute dumpsterfire to a masterpiece"
I like Fred. He's laid back, and not out for some sort of personal gain. He likes adventure, but stays in the background.
I love fred, he's so wholesome, I wonder what would happen if he could have access to like a whiteboard? maybe coax him by writing a really short story on it
Unrelated question: *what would an encounter between SCP 682 and the slenderman (the REAL slenderman, not SCP 582, unless he was pretending the whole time) play out?*
Simple 682 would kill it as it would see Slenderman as something alive and in a 1v1 682 would win
@@unaihmg9352
Maybe, though slendy isn't exactly alive, and can't really be touched, so what would happen between a power that can't be killed, and a presence that can't be hurt?
They wouldn't have a conflict. SCP 682 hates life and slenderman only attacks people. SCP-682 would ignore slenderman and slenderman would find its way to the nearest human.
@@w1ndgeneral226 682 would adapt
"Real" slenderman...
New favorite scp, bro is so humble and likable
Oh gosh! I love this skip! Him and the unwilling dimension hopper feels like people who I could be buddies with!
You guys did Fred dirty with the art work 😭 man is so nice no way that's how he looks
This one was dope ! Friendly scp s are awesome ! Please more, one of the best stories for sure !!!
It would be interesting to see SCP-423 being introduced to the script of the movie "Stranger Than Fiction" which involves a character who's life is being unintentionally controlled by an author with a magical typewriter. I can imagine Fred interacting with the main character having a crisis about their own existence being a story character, and giving genuine advice about it.
I wonder what would happen if you tried playing D&D wiht him. Essentially, a story where all Main Characters are atleast somewhat aware of the narative due to being controlled by players.
Would he enter the paper, and see the world as the DM imaginated?
Fiction or non fiction these are amazing stories it definitely beats watching a bunch of stupid tik toks that have absolutely nothing inspirational about them
Fred is wholesome and seems like the perfect SCP for Agent Curren to work with
Fred should be introduced to the eragon/inheritance cycle. I think he would love it
Discworld would give it an entire new world. A really wonderful one too
1230 needs to cross test with 423 that could be awesome
I don't think much would happen. Remember, 423 has said he "doesn't deserve the spotlight", so an entire story universe written just for him? He'd just politely thank 1230 but refuse to take part.
This experiment is actually pending 05 approval.
This SCP may not insert himself in videogames, but there is another one that can. And can even transform the player into a version of the main character.
Here's hoping you guys do that SCP sometime.
Fred actually can, if you print out the code and give it to him, then run the code, Fred appears in the game
Fred just wants as close of a seat to the action without ever being in said action XD
SCP-423 was in the most recent season of Stranger Things. He can be seen lurking in Elevens history class / high school. Wearing a yellow and black pattern shirt, black hat, and a bolo tie that say “Fred”.
I love side characters like this! Characters that bare show up in the story but have an amazing ability/skill/power that could or be better then the main protagonist and when they do get a arc story about them in a different adventure(like fighting the actual threat XD)
I can't belive that it's finally you and me, just us and your friend _Fred_
The Hulk saying FRED in all caps is the funniest thing in this video, atleast for me.
If there one word that describes Fred, it humble.
So, Bookworm from ancient Batman canon has died and now haunts books as Fred.
Dr. Bright is not allowed to select reading material for SCP-423. He's still angry about last time.
... Just had an interesting idea. Do D&D adventure modules and/or setting resources count as sufficiently story like for SCP-423/Fred? I'm curious what he'd think of a Dungeon Master's campaign notes.
Probably insert himself as a noteworthy but ultimately not that important NPC who has "knowledge" of "other worlds"
like that one playable character in Star Ocean.
"Thankfully the inclusion of a guest researcher - Fred..." GOD DAMN IT, FRED!
Sick SCP VIDEOS KEEP Up the work
I feel for this SCP. If I could transfer myself into different stories, I'd want to keep my head down, too, while enjoying any nice benefits of the given universe.
"i never deserved to be in the spotlight" is the most shocking statement, what does he mean "deserved" now i feel like learning who he "was" is more important than learning who he is. how would he react to text and written based games like dungeons and dragons, or texts with reader chosen options like goosebumps you choose the scare?
They actually did test a goosebumps type story where he just appeared in all the endings at ounce
