    Great to see you looking at the effectiveness of driver assistance systems. Too many professional reviewers seem to ignore them or only mention how the frequent beeping annoys them. All cars have long lists of their safety/assistance systems, but it is difficult to find out if they are any good. A few years ago one reviewer did a great test of AEB. He had a car shaped and sized balloon on a track and drove several different models at it at various speeds to check it. All of them braked but had various degrees of success. The best ones stopped before hitting the balloon, but others did hit it, some more strongly than others. I'm looking forward to your reviews of the Seal's assistance systems

    Tom, I had a very interesting event occur with my Seal today. I had ICC enabled (autopilot) and it activated its own ADAS lane keep assist warnings. It obviously didn't like its own automated steering 🤔. BYD obviously need to improve the lane recognition algorithms. If they can do this, it will likely fix a number of issues.

    Tom - In TSR if you switch on ISLC (intelligent speed limit control) you can get the ICC to match the current TSR. When in ICC a message will come on the screen asking if you want to match the TSR, then you flick up on the toggle to make the ICC match the TSR. Also if you switch ISLI off it won't make a sound when you go over the TSR limit - but still shows the TSR. ISLC status will be remembered, but unfortunately ISLI status always reverts to on.

I was shopping at the lower end of the market as for my needs I just needed an efficient commuter that was going to be comfortable and easy to drive. Re the Tesla changes I really like the MY xcept for the hard suspension & cabin noise could be better, I'd be hoping the Juniper will address these but then it'll probably have the indicator buttons which I think I'd get over but the screen gear selector would be a pain, take when you're doing a 3 pt turn or shuttling into a tight park space you're usually watching the traffic, mirrors or reverse camera & your hand on a physical control can go from forward to reverse without looking but with the screen you're going to look at it...

      When I buy the updated M3 or MY juniper I will retrofit S3XY buttons(enhance auto) stalks when they are released and get autopilot auto reengagement thanks to their recent Christmas software update.

There is no doubt Telsa offer a more seamless interaction with your car. But I'm hoping BYD have the desire to learn from Tesla, and its owner feedback, to improve the software.
      IMO, it's a tough choice between the Model 3 and a Seal. Both offer different benefits. Already having model 3 made the choice easier for me. But I have to say, make sure you are comfortable with having no stalks in the new Highland. I would probably never trade up my Telsa for a new one, unless they add them stalks back again. You can always try a second hand, late model pre-Highland Model 3 as another option, it should save you some money too.

    At 10:50 - shopping centre speed limits are actually legally binding. One day at our big shopping centre the police made a fortune booking speedsters hand over fist.
    I am enjoying your Seal expose as I am looking to replace our "second" ICEv with something very comfortable to drive.
    On the topic of "beeps" the ADRs should allow BYD to provide a settings screen that offered the range of warning options ie., a) haptic: b) sound: and c) visual display AND set them into memory so they do not require re-setting each time.
    Note that the ADRs require a minimum of 2 options to be chosen, so haptic and screen would do away with the annoying "beeps". Interestingly the ADRs imply there is a legal implication if a warning system is REMOVED (eg taking out a fuse as it breaches the regulation), but that a vehicle manufacturer should be able to include an ability to TURN OFF warning systems where they failed real world practicalities, as the rules specifically provide for "deactivation."

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  5 месяцев назад

      Interesting … that the police can book in a private carpark 🤔
      Yes in overseas markets the ADAS settings can be switched off via software and keyed into memory for the next drive. As explained in my previous video it was set this way by our local distributor to comply with ANCAP 5* requirements. I’m hearing on good authority that a software update is coming soon to rectify this. I won’t be removing any fuses or hardware for the reasons you have stated

      @LudicrousFeed EV Direct have been proven incompetent in their vehicle introductions. The warning systems are inbuilt and therefore meet ANCAP requirements. Managing the software so that control remains with the driver, in keeping with ADRs, should have been sorted out over a year ago.

      @remakeit2628 5 месяцев назад

      @@LudicrousFeed As I am not beholden to any automakers I understand why they would spin that line to you, but it does NOT make sense.
      All of the Seal's safety warning systems under ANCAP's "Safety Assist" rating come as standard equipment. Accordingly, it's these features which are tested by ANCAP and your "source's" claim of being "extra cautious" cannot be relevant to what is STANDARD (EV Direct has no say in BYD's safety systems). Quite separate to what ANCAP tests is how drivers are being warned. That's where BYD continues to fail and remains the Seal's worst enemy from every RUclips review. Like you, I hope they can get it right as there are some really simple fixes.
      More important than anything is the fact that an inappropriate level of emphasis is placed on safety systems which contribute to a 5-star ANCAP rating, but regularly fail in real world driving and should be deactivated as they are more likely to contribute to an accident than avoid one if relied upon.
      Here's a direct copypaste from ANCAP's Seal test:
      "Tests of the AEB (Car-to-Car) system showed GOOD performance with collisions avoided or mitigated in most test
      scenarios, with GOOD and ADEQUATE performance in AEB Junction and AEB Crossing scenarios ....
      Assessment of the AEB Head-On system functionality showed MARGINAL performance."
      As a driver I believe I have a right to be able to override any safety system which is only assessed as "adequate" or "marginal" as that is simply not good enough. And as the ADR's note, there can be a case for "deactivation" where tests fail real world experience.

    Hi Tom... good video as always. We're a Tesla and BYD family also, 2021 M3 and Atto 3. I'm just wondering how you find the accelerator responsiveness? My wife first tried her Atto 3 in Eco mode but we found it downright dangerous...just way too much lag. Even in Standard/Normal mode the lag is a bit too pronounced so now we always drive it in Sport mode. It's acceptable but there is still a slight lag, whereas the Tesla is just super responsive.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah agree with you, I find the responsiveness in the Atto 3 lacking. The Seal has the ever slightest of lag as I’ve mentioned a few times but nothing on the Atto 3 or MG tbh
      Otherwise it’s within my acceptable tolerance

    • @vasil7410
      @vasil7410 5 месяцев назад

      I actually think the lag in my Seal Performance, even in Sport mode, is a bit too much. I love the instantaneous responsiveness of my Model 3. I am hoping BYD improves this aspect.

      Tesla: The Whole is greater than the sum of its parts
      BYD: The sum of its parts is greater than the whole
      The BYD lacks thoughtful holistic engineering, and the tesla, despite its many drawbacks, is a better car to drive.

    • @vasil7410
      @vasil7410 5 месяцев назад

      @@stevenleonards4843They are different cars to drive, better in their own ways. BTW, I would not upgrade my current Model 3 until Tesla put back some of those missing parts, such as stalks. Disabling problematic ADAS systems is nothing compared to having no indicator stalk and screen based gear change. There is nothing holistic about this aspect of Tesla's engineering.

    • @stevenleonards4843
      @stevenleonards4843 5 месяцев назад

      @vasil7410 agree with a lot of what you say. However, auto steer is a huge plus for 500km of highway driving every week. So if I was spending model 3 money, I would purchase the Tesla, not the premium.
      I think the dynamic is the best buy in the BYD lineup. As the driver aid technology is so poorly calibrated, I don't think one can justify paying higher prices for the premium or performance models. You are better off purchasing the tesla and adding aftermarket indicator stalks which will be released soon enough.
      I've also just discovered there is a way of running Android apps on a tesla through a Web interface which is swaying me more towards the Model 3 now.
      The seal will be no different to a used Toyota camry in a few years, while the Tesla software continues to improve.

      Good question
      I think you need to get a car that’s fit for your purpose. Like all cars, EVs or otherwise: is it big/small enough, is there enough cargo space, what’s the ride height and is it ok for your driveway
      For EV specific questions: do you have home charging setup? Is 7kW enough or do you drive enough to warrant 11kW? If you don’t have home charging then what about the car’s DC charging capabilities - is it fast enough to tolerate regular public charging?
      Do you do regular road trips? If so then Tesla SC network is what will tip you over to buy a Tesla. Do you like using autonomous driving features?

      @notinthemanual 5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Rob. I had a 3 and now a Y with glass roof here in Sydney. It’s never bothered me. The only issue is the glass heats up as it absorbs the heat instead of letting it through. You feel that for about the first 5 mins on the top of your head after you get in the car when it’s been sitting in the sun. Once you have some air flowing on the outside and the AC going the glass cools down very fast. I’d say the seal will be much the same. I hardly ever use roof shades.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  5 месяцев назад +2

      The glass roof in the Model 3/Y and likely the Seal will probably make the car hotter if parked in the hot sun all day hence why the sunshades are useful if parked outside. Once the AC is on, it’s usually enough to keep the cabin cool. Although I wonder with the shades, the AC probably works less hard and thus makes the drive more efficient … a test probably worth doing

    • @notinthemanual
      @notinthemanual 5 месяцев назад

      @@LudicrousFeed Yes it definitely lets the car get warmer but remote AC cools the car off anyway and the glass cools quite fast with airflow over it. I was worried about this before I bought a Tesla but it’s been a non-event and the issue tends to get hyped up by some people. I tried to do a test on this but found it hard to get measurable or consistent results. There are so many other variables to consider. I’ve got a heap of footage that wasn’t worth editing in the end. You might have more luck with your experience.

    • @notinthemanual
      @notinthemanual 5 месяцев назад

      @@LudicrousFeed Tesla throws most of that cabin heat to the battery anyway so only some of it is wasted. Unless of course it’s a 40deg day. Not sure if the Seal has this capability or not. I honestly haven’t felt like the glass roof is a negative from my point of view.
