"A true warrior doesn't need a sword." Please, Don't forget these important words. Anyway, Thorfinn's voice actor is god.

Yeah, JA's voice actors are AMAZING. I especially like the voices of Halfdan, Floki, and King Svein.

So the mushroom thing is actually part of Viking lore - they were given the men they called Berserkers and they were essentially hallucinogenic mushrooms that would amplify their rage in battle.

Thanks so much for this info! So cool how we have such historically accurate representation in anime!

Askeladd was in fact not joking in the moment, he really did tell Thors was a good man. But ofc he played it off

I just want to go through a few of the details I love about this... also, Teji in the back suffering with the burden of foreknowledge is probably going to characterize a lot of this reaction. I have been that person amongst my friends before and it is rough.
anyway, when Thors faces down Askeladd, and he asks if Askeladd has a wife or kids... I think he's testing.
I think in some part, he's testing for how compassionate Askeladd will or won't be toward Thors, knowing that he's a father. would a man like Askeladd be more compassionate toward that? but also, who will suffer if it comes right down to it, and Thors can't afford to spare this man's life? Thors knows that he absolutely can kill him... but should he? in the end, it's stunning how little that matters. Thors doesn't want to kill people, even just for the fact that they're alive at all. and this is something that Thors is unique for being capable of considering. if Askeladd and his men are any indication, that is a rare and valuable feature in a person.
throughout these four episodes, we've seen Thors display many rare and valuable traits. when he dies, this is what we're losing. the world needs the perspective of a man like Thors, and when he dies, look at what we're left with. I think Askeladd knows this too.
that's why Thors reminds him of the conditions of their duel. sure, holding Thorfinn hostage is scummy, and if the man was truly honorable, he'd admit that he lost, and let them go. but Thors is about to give his life. he won't know what happens after that. Askeladd could kill Thors and then easily take everything he was going to take in the first place. but Thors sees that Askeladd wasn't planning to have Bjorn make this move. it puts him at a tactical advantage, but this wasn't his intent from the beginning. so he's relying on Askeladd to take the reward he'll get from killing Thors, and leave everything else on the table. the ship that his crew will use to get back... the young men he could sell into slavery... Thors is trusting Askeladd to let this go.
honestly, Thors will never stop being relevant. not for the entire rest of the story of Vinland Saga. the way Thors acts in these early episodes will always be a point of reference in this narrative. and this encounter, in particular, between Thors and Askeladd, is one that you may want to go back and watch again somewhere down the line. there's so much important context that informs the decisions that are made here... looking at it now, it's amazing how relevant this fight still is.
also, an interesting tidbit that is only speculative here: when Thors said his "you have no enemies" piece, and Thorfinn confronted his father about the fact that he was going to go to war, where his job would be to kill the enemy... it makes me wonder if this was Thors' plan all along. to defeat the enemy without taking a life, and to die when this method eventually failed. when it was his time, and he couldn't keep it up anymore. there might've been more nuance to it than that, in practice, but Thors might've been even more prepared than we had figured, to never come back.
it kind of changes the tone of these episodes a little, if you view it as possibly Thors setting his final affairs in order.

Askeladd was breathing hard because he saw his life flash before him. If Thors had kicked him, which he nearly did, Askeladd would have been in DEEP trouble. Askeladd perceived this.

It's here. Day 150 of recommending the openings and endings of "Spare Me Great Lord".
It's a chinese anime, so slightly different to the stuff you've reacted to so far, but it's got some of the vibest music and animation I've ever seen.
