Very helpful. I am so detailed oriented that it’s hard for me to do loose watercolor, but I love the look of it. Going to try this method. Thank you!

Me too! So hard to force myself to paint and not illustrate

Once more you have given me that push, and that reminder that we need to identify what is important in a painting. I often forget this Matthew and get frustrated. This is probably THE most important thing among all the other key elements in planning a painting. Thanks again Matthew., and the artist's examples were perfect!

    T. Chamberlain, my mentor since many years ago. Apparent simplicity like Edward Seago. Great artist.

My grandfather, who was a watercolour artist took me to see Edward Seago when I was a boy and he gave my grandad a lovely sketch of horses pulling a plough over a Norfolk field .Andy

One defined shape can create a key for all the other shapes. That is an excellent point Matthew. And one to remember. Trevor Chamberlain is a Fantastic artist and his compositions are impeccable. Thanks for sharing this. 👍🏼

I really like the paintings that you used as an example. They really showed your idea well. Sometimes it is hard for me to say why I really like one painting over another and how the artist got there. Thanks for the clear explanation and example.

I'm a big fan of Trevor Chamberlain too, Matthew. I once did a demonstration for his local art society, and he was there! No pressure, then.
Before my demo' I did get a chance to chat with him. He was very charming and he also signed my copy of his book (I'd been told he was going to be there).
The paintings in it are vey inspirational, and it contains some valuable insights into the way he works. My favourite is the one you actually showed in your video, 'A Quiet Canal in Venice'. His friend, David Curtis, has painted the same scene in his own book. I suspect they might have had a watercolour road trip.

I bought TC's oil painting book in 1993 on a whim. Was so beautiful his intimate scenes, or sketches really. Just missed drawing from college and thats when I started painting(oil). Not always consistently.... life. He never paints feet as helps describe the figs are in motion.

Very helpful, especially liked how you explained if you see a clearly identifiable person, your eye will identify less defined but similar shapes as people. Hadn’t thought of that

Terrific tips, thank you, Matthew. The central idea really is key, in all expressions of art...or any other communication. And this is a great reminder to stay focused on that and not get lost in striving to perfect the details.

Thank you, I love loose style, but always end up being too detailed. Will be more mindful when I paint next time.

Im thinking that im right at the breaking point, and starting to pass it, wherein my skills are a thing i dont think about, and I just say "i want to give attention to this foliage" and it just happens. Ive been doing semi abstract and expressionist landscapes like thid artist here for a while, but watercolor (raw, no ink or gouache) really is such a beauty on its own.
