Every music lover has that one good song or album that's ruined by a shitty time or person. For Brian Baker of #punkrock royalty bands #BadReligion and #MinorThreat, a particularly terrible record completely ruined listening to one of his favorite bands. For bassist Jay Bentley, an awkward relationship when he was a teenager left him with lifelong ill will. Bad Religion offer up their tales of heartache, shock, confusion and overexposure that have rendered some great music utterly unlistenable in this episode of APTV's #RUINEDMUSIC.

They sorta did ruin music for me. I heard stranger then fiction and recipe for hate when i was in 5th grade and no other band has measured up since.
I love Brian’s attitude towards older/frequently played songs. Respect! And Jay talking about Motörhead is me with Laura Jane Grace and Against Me!.
Much love for Brian Baker for saying that the fans are everything. It doesn't matter how amazing something is if nobody is listening.
😂😂😂
Noice, Bad Religion is the “Iron Maiden of Punk Rock”. Bad Religion is awesome. Other than that, cool:).
Justin Tyler Jimenez I love them both.
I think the title is intentionally ambiguously/inflammatorily phrased lol. The video is more like "Bad Religion's Ruined Music" or "Bad Religion: Ruined Music"
I saw Bad Religion last night in St. Pete and they killed it.
Of course they did
I saw them in SLC a couple months ago and it was amazing.
Im.seeing them in a week and im so pumped
@@jigsaw1285 They're amazing. The Venue I went to see them at was new and their setup looked so clean.
Seen 'em a bunch of times over the last ... holy crap, almost 9 years now, I just realized. They're always absolutely fantastic. I'm biased, they're my all-time favorite band
Cool vid! Wise words from Jay and Brian regarding performing.
Every word Mr Baker spoke was spot on...Nearly every word Jay spoke was spot on...loved the cassette reference for sure.
"Grave New World" was British hardcore's "Into the Unknown".
I just saw them in Ventura and jay stayed after the show and thanked us all he is awesome and Bad Religion is still my favorite band .
:) favorite band forever
I met Jay once after a show in Oregon. He’s such a fucking cool guy, he literally gave me like 7 minutes of undivided attention and million dollar life advise after I asked him a question.
Nice
I met him after a show in Germany at their tour bus and he gave us a couple of beers from the bus because the location had been closed already. Very nice, down-to-earth guy!
Afi is ruined for me after davey havok started sounding poppy
Process of Belief and Suffer are constant albums being played in my car.
Being part of the Gimmes sounds like the most fun job ever!
Funny that Brian would mention REM, considering he passed up a spot in REM as a touring guitarist to join BR in 1994.
I can't remember the last time I listened to the radio. That's why I have a lot of CD's and they're ripped onto playlists.
I'll listen to some morning shows sometimes in the mornings but I'm definately with you with ripping cds and making playlists. It's just so fun to do!
I love that whole segment talking about having the motor head cd in there for 6 months. I do the same thing. I never liked radio even as a kid. And i dont like drive to music im not used to as well. - While i have a number of cds in the car, both bad religion and others, i have one compilation i burnt together. It has around 160-170 songs on it. Iv lost track of how many years its been in the cd player.
I had never heard that Discharge album and I think that Baker does a pretty accurate description of it
Damn I loved Bang Tango haha! Heart of Stone! Thanx Brian and Jay.
Idk How in the intro made my heart happy
When you said that songs are like children although some do better then others , you love them all the same made me think about “into the unknown” although it’s one of my favorite albums.
They actually started playing the Dichotomy live
Thank you Brian Baker. You are awesome. Keep jammin!
Robert Plant should listen to this: "the audience is why you are on the stage" (Baker, Brian)
Rodrigo Krieger Fernandes absolutely spot on.
Great insight on hardcore & punk classics!
Brian -- "The One I Love" is on "Document", not "Lifes Rich Pageant." But I agree, by all means, crank LRP
Nice to see Brian is an REM fan. Lifes Rich Pageant is a great album, and Fall on Me is a beautiful song.
After seeing this I had to check out Grave New World...Brian's description is very accurate!
I feel basically all what they had to say. Interesting shit fellas 💯💯
MarkB 1181 Thank you for watching!!
I love this band, and love how cool these two are. I have to admit I though from the title that BR was gonna cop to ruining music by introducing Kid Rock to the world.
3:05 BILLY CORGAN NEEDS TO HEAR THIS!!!
Forcing people to listen to Throbbing Gristle is just plain wrong
Yeah, rock stations are repetitive it’s annoying but good video! 🤘
x Punkinpie x ☺️☺️🤘🤘
That description is leaving me in suspense
Tyler Dokis 😂 it’s fixed now. Sorry for the suspense!
I love the gimme gimmes and lots of their songs are originally songs I would never listen to. Even now I hear punk and metal covers of pop songs and they’re so badass. I may despise the original artists and their musical compositions, but they can be re-worked to be awesome.
Every Discharge fan blocks out they recorded anything after 1984. Or that they play shows. I don't know who goes to their shows but it's not discharge fans.
ive always wanted to hang out with jay... hes just so fucking rad
Grave New World!! 100% I remember that horror of that lp!! I moved to Broken Bones after that!!!!! Discharge were so good short to the point lyrically & musically slam into yr ears, awesome! Loved the first 7" ep Reality of War, the WHY 12" ep , & 1 first lp "See Nothing...." with my favorite song title "Q: AND CHILDREN, A: AND CHILDREN" says it all.......
I was surprised when Baker mentioned Discharge, but then I remembered he was in Minor Threat😀
My name is Simon from Whatculture...
Why? *Slaps various parts of head and body* HERE'S WHY!
I was surprised when Baker mentioned Discharge, but then I remember he was in Minor Threat😀
He was in Dag Nasty too
Minor Threat Complete Discography.. one of the greatest punk albums. Agree or naa. I agree
They are one of the most important bands to ever exist.
It's good
Gotta be tired of playing STF digital boy when you can be playing the superior ATG version.
My favorite band for 20 years!
the one i love is off of document, not life's rich pageant.
Baker was asked to join REM in 1994 (which was a lot more successful than BR) but he chose BR instead, or as he put it back then, "That's me in the corner, choosing Bad Religion."
Heck yea just saw these cats on Tuesday. Was Badass
I totally identify with the guy's statement about listening to radio.
Yuck! Radio is the phlegm of music. The polite thing to do is ignore it. But, it never really goes away, for some reason.
I’m checking out the blasters
get their first record, it's great!! i'm going to see them at the horseshoe next Friday.
The blasters are badass.
Rockabilly is pretty good stuff.
As I was going through a lot of difficult times in life I would listen to Nirvana and I studied it to her and you what every word meant and I read multiple books about courting love and Kurt Cobain etc and if this topic is about music that somebody messes up for you yeah there is this friend of mine who is a big hippie stoner type wannabe and every once in a while he would just get in the groove of playing like summaries of Nirvana over and over and over again and sometimes doing that with certain songs and since I'd already heard them all like the back of my hand it would just bring up badd memories
“Yeah hey”
Hold up, no B.S? No Boss, no Bob Seger? No Bob Skags?! Brian, WTF?!
Sunspot Baby is better than anything Bad Religion ever did.
That's Boz Scaggs, and no.
That's funny what Brian says about Discharge... yes, it was a huge topic, because they were a huge band.... but also funny because "Into the Unknown" from Bad Religion was just as horrible, but punks everywhere forgave Bad Religion. Listening to it now, it's not terrible song writing, but when it came out most of us that bought it were like, "huh? wtf is this ???"... fortunately "Back to the Known" made up for it... and Bad Religion was big on the west coast of America (where I lived) but they weren't as huge or as influential as Discharge was worldwide.... 0
Bad Religion also made up for that stinker when they reunited and did "Suffer"... between them reuniting and everything going on in the Bay Area at the time (Lookout records), the west coast punk scene was re-ignited from near ashes... it was one of the best times I can remember. Guys that hadn't been around the scene for 4 or 5 years started coming around, bringing their old bands back, etc...
The other funny thing about Brian railing on Discharge is that Brian played in Junkyard... lol
Motörhead for 6 months LMAO love it 😁👍🏽
I approve of videos like this. 😁
Cameron Sykes Glad you enjoyed it!! Did you get an opportunity to watch the Unboxing Bad Religion Video we did? It’s pretty rad!! 🚫✝️
Trent Reznor and Hank III .... nice
I love bad religion, but i still hate the way they did Heston.
Lmao “broadway shit show”. I love you, Jay
Baker on his high horse about discharge.. Like he is not in the band that released. "Into the unknown"..😂😂🙄.
Hey guys guess what!
I have a smooth funky little jam of an album I'd like to show you and it's called 20 Jazz Funk Greats, trust me you'll love it. (locks the car doors)
I thought this video was about shit talking bad religion. I was finna go off.
last discharge album is da bomb
No BS! Haha. I live in Texas and AC/DC has been ruined by the radio
Discharge is an aquired taste (to be kind).
Lagwagon and Bad Religion
Funny and insightful
Bad Religion ruined music for the better.
Damn Jay don't dye your hair haha
Into the Unknown! Lol
The argument for Bad Religion ruining music is that NOFX copies their Suffer sound then Fat Mike signed a dozen bands who evolved that sound, and pretty soon every pink band on the planet had that sound. I like the sound, though, so I’m not complaining.
No
Nah
in to the unknown nearly did it for me only joking love bad religion peace and love lloydy
Brian Bakers philosophy seems to echo that of Steward Copeland of the Police.
He explained that 'Roxanne is no longer ours'.
And you should be damned proud to provide it.
But did Brian just totally diss former drummer Bobby Schayer...? LOL
Not gonna lie, as much as Bad Religion is my all-time favorite punk band, Into The Unknown was a horrible Dire Straits sounding album, which I fully believe ruined music for some. I just listen to it every so often stoned and laugh. That's about it.
The One I Love isn't on Life's rich Pageant, but that LP is epic.
No BS 😁
AFI is my discharged and sing the sorrow is my grave new world.
Lmao, poor Joey
This title is so clickbait. Even for other bands
I mean that's the joke? "oh it's not that they ruined music, it's the music they liked that has since been" ruined" because of someone or something.
@@medes5597 I am quite aware of this "joke" but its clickbait UNLESS it was (band name) : ruined music.
@@hanss8234 I mean you put "joke" in quote marks but given that it's clearly intentional and it's clearly done as a joke.
It's a wry way of titling the videos and I see more comments saying "well played" or "I was initially mad but when I realised and understood the title, I thought it was clever/funny/etc"
I don't know I just don't see it as click bait, I see it as a joke that doesn't hide its actual content and doesn't try to hide what it is. It just has a jokey name.
@@medes5597 is your last name really Beardmore? That's pretty gnarly dude
BS!!!!!!
Damn right yo. Bad Religion did ruin music. Fuck three part harmonies and fast drumming.
Bad Religion ruined punk rock
Bad religion is an amazing band.....But im pretty sure graffin(assuming he wrote most lyrics) believes in God...yeah i said it...he recognizes sin
I don't think so.
No. He doesn’t.
This is the stupidest clickbait ever
I agree with the concept, but it still was a good interview.
It's not clickbait you stupid moron.
The liberal soyboys of punk rock
You get that the vast majority of punk rock is left wing, right?
I would like to thank Bad Religion for writing "The Kids Are Alt Right", They made us look really cool.
Is alt right even still a thing?
bad religion is ruined music
Bad Religion, weak ass cookie cutter pop/punk, one of the first of the worst.
Seriously people. Google bad religion "into the unknown". Its hilariously bad.
What next you gonna say Recipe for Hate is bad for trying new stuff?
I personally like Into the Unknown and their more experimental stuffs.
That being said, I DO think the complete failure of that album is directly responsible for their comeback with the pure and refined holy trinity.
@@xXJacobBuckXx i believe you should listen the "into the unknown" before your judgement. It's seriously awful..
@@dereklindberg6704 I have bro, it's actually pretty good if you don't look at it from a "punk" perspective.
@@xXJacobBuckXx ehh it was a cash grab that missed. Idk. I try real hard to get into the Baker era stuff.. But all in all. Alot of recycled riffs .... For me its the first 2 records. Then straight to Empire. I can do without the middle era..
Kinda CLICKBAIT?
