I have a question for you...What time do you get up, if they are getting up at 7:00? I was getting up at the same time as my kids last year, but I am thinking if I got up 30 minutes earlier then things would go a little smoother. Mama needs her coffee BEFORE everyone is awake. Lol😁 Also, I think a good protein breakfast is oatmeal with nuts and chia seeds. We prefer pecans or walnuts. It is very filling!🌟

if the eight-year-old boys comment really affected you, then that means you need to pray for him and for his mom to change herway of thinking in Jesus name. We are all here to help each other out and prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can help. Your prayers can change someone's life and they can surely change this boy's home life and the dynamics within his family.

I admire how you are not only raising happy healthy children, but TRAINING them to be self-sufficient, EFFICIENT, adults prepared to enter the world at their time of discovery with the foundations you and their dad find valuable. There will be a day they realize what you gave them, and thank you, perhaps, in the best possible way...by TRAINING their own offspring! TAKE A BOW, MOM AND DAD! : )

I do it all the night before. I sign the homework/reading logs, pack their bag, make their lunch, lay out their clothes, plan breakfast and set up the coffee machine ;)
I am TERRIBLE in the morning so this is all for my own benefit. All they have to do is put their clothes on and get to the table and I do their hair as they eat.
We can be out the door in less than 20 minutes from the kids waking up to when we leave.
Sometimes the baby is still in his pjs.. and sometimes I have no shoes on so I can't get out of the car, but we are never late.

Thank you about the natural consequences! It's teaching them something! However, some people think that's mean. My child will remember how much it sucked forgetting their lunch or homework or whatever. It doesn't motivate them to take responsibility if they know someone will bail them out. Great advice today!

I 100% agree - natural consequences are essential. I allow my kids one reprieve on "forgetting" their lunch per term. I will bring it only once - after that - they miss out. (It's never happened more than once per child, to be honest.) I'm the same with homework and library books.

They brush their teeth, set their alarms and go read in their beds at 7. They’re usually asleep by 7:30, as their alarms go off at 6. And we leave at 7:10.

More time for bedtime snuggles and relaxing time with hubby after the kids are in bed.

We've started using some of your ideas for school this year. I can already tell a difference in how easily our mornings are going. Our kids pack their non perishables the night before in their lunchboxes. They also gather all of their cold items (bag up grapes, a cup of yogurt, etc) and set them together in a small bin in the fridge (each child has their own). They are also responsible for making sure their ice packs are in the freezer. This way in the morning all they have to do is grab their cold things and an ice pack and put them into their lunchboxes. The small bins from the fridge are then ready to be repacked that evening before bed. Our rule, one protien, one fruit/vegetable, and some type of grain. And I have found asking them before I grocery shop what they'd like as their fruits and vegetables for lunches has helped tremendously (mind you my school agers are 8,10, and 13). Silly, but it does cut down in waste, and they actually eat it, so I'm spending less this way. Thanks again for the great tips!

  • @lisaharr1477

My kids are all grown up but my tricks to making lunches were to make sandwiches the night before and write the child's name or initial in marker on the outside of the ziplock bag. If they were lunchmeat and cheese sandwiches I froze them. They would be perfectly thawed and soft and fresh by lunchtime. I also froze the yogurt in a tube and it would still be really cool by lunchtime. My kids would pick out their snacks the night before and have them in their lunch bag then all they had to do was grab their sandwich and yogurt in the morning. It really helped me with time saving in the morning because I also had to get myself to work on time ! And you are absolutely right about the fruit - I found out from a friend who volunteered at the lunchroom that my kids were also throwing away their apples or bananas I used to put in their lunch ! So I started letting them pick out their "sides" for their lunches and they ate everything ! I love watching your channel ! Keep up the great work !

Wewe Mcrhyne My kids both have ADHD as well. For us, prep has to happen waaaay in advance. In other words, everything the night before so that they have very little to deal with in the mornings. Heck, I’ve had them sleep in their school clothes in seasons where getting dressed in the morning was rough! I keep my daughters hair shorter now, as the washing and combing and styling was just a lot for her. I’ve made little adjustments along the way and will always have to do so. The biggest tip I took away from this is that my kids (also 4-9) can use an alarm!
My 4 year old will be doing half days so she leaves at noon but my 6 & 9 year olds are surely going to be waking up to an alarm this year!
Can't wait to go buy one at Walmart this weekend, putting it on my list now so I don't forget!!!
If I could train them to wake up to an alarm and get dressed without me having to ask would be amazing!
    Thanks again Dawn!
P.s. couldn't agree more about sleep! I think if they're going to bed too late an alarm wouldn't even phase them so I'll be sure to make sure they are in bed early!!

My saving grace with my son was putting his shoes and socks in the car with his backpack in the evening. That way all we had to remember was the lunch box. I had a cereal box I had cut open and painted to put all his papers in so I could go thru them and we made it so he just had 30 minutes of homework at night so we had time to eat and spend time together before bed. My biggest thing was I took a shower at night so I could get up earlier and have a cup of coffee to wake up and I went to sleep at the same time every night 9 pm. I found when I was better rested I was not as cranky in the morning.

For several years now it has been proven in my home that when our grandson (whom we are raising) gets up in the morning, his attitude is determined by our attitude. I'm the chippery one while my husband (retired military) is the regimented one. I've had to point it out that our attitude affects our grandson and I hate it when his day begins on the wrong foot. There are many new things that I want to implement this year ... deciding together what will be in the lunch boxes, as well as packing the lunch box himself. You are such an inspiration and helping me realize what a child is capable of is also awesome. You are helping me guide him as he grows and becomes more independent. Recently I said the things that I get you to do now is so that I know you are capable of doing them when you get out on your own. (That's something that will happen only too soon! - Mom of two. :) I always take time to pray with my grandson before releasing him out the door. I feel once I've done that, I can trust that God is going to do what He needs to do while my grandson is away from home. It also is a great conclusion to the beginning of my day. Thanks for helping. You have so many wonderful ideas. I'm hooked!

Do you know I kept thinking about this video on how else can I us get our day on the right foot... My kids have to clean their own room on the weekend and they're older, minimalist so it works. Their chore was one day their bathroom, one day laundry. I was feeling overwhelmed in the kitchen but it was ok I did it because Im off for the summer. Now that Im back to work Ive switched our chores. I was like were just changing with our season of life. The kids do the bathroom and their laundry Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I will also do our clothes, sheets and towels stocked for the week. This will also save me tremendously on our electric bill. Monday thru Thursday everyone helps out in the kitchen. There's cooking, washing the dishes, putting up the dishes and sweeping. I am loving it already sooooo much. It keeps my heart happy that my home is not in a disarray and here I am rushing to work. I go to sleep a little earlier with it all done. We have everything ready to zip out the door. A big sigh of relief! 😅

Yes our kids need to be reminded and set up routines etc, but I think the greatest gift of this video is you reminding us as parents to SET THE TONE! We get off track too, with yelling, getting easily frustrated, trying to check the boxes and make it through, that we forget to take a moment and smile and say GOOD MORNING with a high pitch chipper voice. I still do what my mom did for us, she woke us up singing "Rise and shine and give God the glory," on repeat..... I smile with joy thinking of that. I continually try to set that tone, be joyful and glad even when I don't want to and usually that small positive attitude/thought changes the whole day.
    Thank you

It’s so true still to this day at 33 years old my mother can effect my attitude for the worst and it’s definitely a struggle to overcome even as an adult. Mothers truly set the stage for the home and carry more weight then ever these days. Your content really helps me keep things in perspective on what’s most important.

I'm really going to work on better mornings this school year. My 8yo daughter does great and she's a morning person. My 6yo son is not a morning person and he just will not get up or get moving and will throw huge fits. When he turned 3, we started dressing him for sleep in whatever clothes he would wear the next day. That has helped with his morning a lot. But I really want his day to start off better, he refuses to eat so I'm usually sending him with something small like a granola bar or waffle that he can eat in the car. Hopefully this will be the year of fewer power struggles in the morning with him. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to watch it with my husband too.

Great video Dawn! To add about our attitude, one morning when my daughter was in 3rd grade, she and I had a rough morning. I remember dropping her off at school wishing I could have a do-over. I was so upset by how we had reacted to each other that I called my hubs at work and vented. He told me to go pick her up and do a do-over. She’s your daughter and you get this moment. So I waited until lunch, picked her up and had a mommy/daughter afternoon. She still talks about that being such a positive thing for her. She even asks for rough mornings just so we can do lunch and fun afternoons. She’s going into 8th grade this year. So it’s not too late if you happen to screw it up. Kids are very forgiving!

I love the attitude comment. It's totally true! As for lunches, I have my kids make theirs the night before and put them in the fridge so they can grab and go in the morning. They got so sick of sandwiches though that sometimes we use hard boiled eggs for the protein, or cheese and meat rolled up in tortillas and heated right before we leave for school then wrapped in a few layers of foil and a hot pad to stay warm until lunch.

Wisk & pour into cupcake lined or prepared muffin tins & bake at 400ish degrees for 10-14 min ....reheat-able , egg kinda bites! if you like you can even add frozen shredded hash-browns in the mix! Now, I can just tell them to get dressed, and I know they'll turn out looking ok. It has made a BIG difference in my stress level in the morning. And in turn, the kids' stress level. I just recycle the bags for the next week. I did not do that for my daughter, as she is a fashionista, and I have no problem motivating her into picking out an outfit the night before. Unfortunately, I have tried to cook foods for breakfast & snacks earlier in the week, but my 12 year old son will eat them all as snacks before the middle of the week! Preteen boys are ALWAYS hungry! Simplifying their wardrobe (especially going through it with them & having the picky preteen choose what to keep that he will actually wear!) had made a big difference in the time it takes them to get ready this summer! Love your ideas and suggestions! As a former educator of children with special needs, I know that some people, especially small children are naturally more visual and benefit from having some sort of visual chart available depicting the order of the steps that need to be accomplished.....it also makes the parents feel like they are doing less nagging. This can help maintain that positive morning attitude for everyone.

I have two anxious special needs children. I would not be able to get them to school if I didn’t create a calm and happy environment for them in the morning. My attitude is everything. My sister was so surprised how calm our school morning is but even a hurried routine can be done calmly. It’s a choice and for us a necessity. Also this last couple of weeks we gave up keeping a variety of school snacks. We have the same snack for school all week. We have plenty of variety. It is just sequential variety. I am also going to do this for after school snacks. I am thinking of having hummus and vegetables after school all week, next week. So much easier. Less decision fatigue and less stuff to manage.

So love this - we have a very similar routine in the mornings... we use music cues as opposed to alarms though... - different rhythms and beats to signify different routines (eg - peaceful + slow for wake up soon - then more lively and active for "you should be getting ready now" - and literally the song from the Cars movie for "race out the door" lol) I need to get better at proper breakfasts - mostly the kids have toast or cereal. We had those same lunchboxes - oh the lunchboxes I've been through - they were ok for a while - but tend to get broken. I have found some "Smash" brand ones that are AWESOME though. I don't know if they're international? (I'm in Australia). I just literally laughed out loud because I have said the exact same thing "We have been doing this same routine literally your entire life - and you're acting like it's new to you??!" lol - I've a long way to go in terms of minimising - but you're seriously goals. I have "print out" checklists that I refer the kids to but we don't tick them off as much as just look at them for reminders - saving my breath. lol Also I have the kids make a week's worth of sandwiches and freeze them so all I have to do is add it to their lunchboxes each day. It's amazing just that one item matters. Our lunches are - sandwich, fruit, and two snacks. Most of it comes back anyway. So I have the same philosophy as you with that too. - Oh so sorry for the novel. I'll stop now. x Mel

You are so right about getting enough sleep being the biggest priority for a successful morning! I have twins that just starting kindergarten, so we’re getting back into the school routine after a summer off from pre-k. Last year we were in the habit of resetting for the next school day immediately upon arriving home. Lunch leftovers were the after school snack while I packed the lunch box for the next day. And backpacks were emptied and reset after snack time. My kids pick out their outfits for the next day at bedtime; we avoid dressing hiccups by only having out school and seasonally-appropriate clothing accessible. I’ve been waking them up myself, but I like the idea of getting them an alarm. And we do yogurt with fruit & granola in warm weather and oatmeal with fruit in cold weather. They both also drink a plant-based milk with 10g of protein/cup and that keeps them full til snack time.

Back to lunches... I remember seeing all the brown paper lunch sacks folded neatly on top with our names on each one. She did little things for each of us. Whether it was napkins with smiley faces on them or the Flintstones paper bags. She made my pb&j with butter on both pieces of bread. She pinned our milk money to our shirts (6 pennies in a white envelope). She never yelled at us. Honestly I don’t remember anything crazy on the mornings so that makes me realize I was well taken care of and loved. We were not a affectionate family but I always felt affection from my mom in the many things she did for us that equated love to us.

I think I will implement the alarm clocks this year. I am still an advocate of getting everything ready the night before. We don’t have a lot of time to get ready in the morning so that way the kids can have time to eat and not rush, but I will have them help the night before so it is still their responsibility. You’re a great mom! We also get up early, so there is no rush to get ready. I prep the fruits and veggies on the weekend, so it’s easy to add them to the lunches. Our son goes to bed at 7 pm even though he is a young adult now. He gets up by 5 am, full of energy and ready to start a new day.

Sistema products have always held up well for me. I bet they'll work out for you. Just a heads up, most of them have a gasket in the lids that needs to be removed for cleaning on occasion. Thanks for the great tips, especially the attitude check!

Your right attitude is a 100% key . I'm not always perfect especially if we wake up late and some days I'm just not feeling well in the mornings. They are few and far in between but I always feel awful if I yell in the morning or am rushing my son . I know it affects his day. Loved this video is was easy enough to apply tips to my real life .

We have a similar strategy in the morning. One of the game changers for us was changing the alarms to be songs instead of just noise. I tried to pick songs that went with the event. So a song about waking, a song about eating, a song about going outside. Then we can enjoy the music while we are doing the task. After awhile I didn’t have to say anything because the song was the cue for the activity to be done.

Women definitely set the TONE of their home! I love that the kiddos have their own alarms. Great tip. We do alarms on my phone for hair/teeth, 5 minute warning ⚠️ and run to the bus. Making them more responsible is such a great tip.

May I suggest you something I use (and most Asian parents use) as dividers in lunch boxes should they not come with any? We like to use cupcake holders (the paper wrapper cup thingy). If you want to reuse them, I ordered some from amazon. Otherwise, dollar stores carry them too with various patterns to choose from. So you can separate your fruit from veggies from little snacks. 😊

Wow...my kids aren’t even in school yet but some of these tips are still so relevant. Thank you. Thinking about MY sleep in terms of how it can impact the KIDS’ day.... 🤯 Great, great point. 💚

This was right on time. The part about attitude makes so much sense. I am not a morning person, so I have to wake up and mentally prepare before getting things ready for my family. And my son definitely needs cuddles!
Do you like breakfast burritos? Take 3 to 4 ingredients (cooked ahead of time, batch made, vegetarian or otherwise) And freeze each one in a plastic wrap. It heats up quickly in the micro (plastic wrap removed first) and they can even be browned on the griddle or in a pan for a minute.

The kids kept wanting different things for breakfast and kept whining if they didn't get what they wanted. So I made a breakfast menu and certain days have a certain breakfast (switch between eggs and toast, oatmeal, and yogurt/berries) and now both my husband and I are on the same page and the kids know what we are having every morning and it's not a decision we have to make every day.

Nice job! Good self reliance in your kids is great. I know it's hard but so worth it when they are older. I help teach 1st and 2nd grade at church and I was just wondering what morning or night bible reading/ prayer practices parents have with their kids? And if they fit into routines.

After 18 years of me homeschooling, my last 2 kids ( 13 and 14 years old) will be going to a private school. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this particular video. Having to think about this now will help us have more successful "get out the door" experiences. My attitude is what I will be practicing even on these last few weeks of summer break. Thank you!

Thanks for the reminder for me to have a good attitude. Yesterday I took my 3 to the doctor and I was completely stressed and we were late and rushed and I was cranky and didn't realize how I was impacting our trip. If I had just relaxed or something I think it definitely would have gone better. Luckily we had a better afternoon once we got home. But I'll definitely remember this for the school mornings.

I LOVE what that little boy said. I’ve been trying to be in a good mood in the morning and setting my kids up for success. Thanks for really driving that point home!
