      This is sort of a thing I dislike about how GW does its worldbuilding. They COULD just as easily excise the angle about Drukhari needing to torture people, and say they do that because it's fun and it's all most of them have ever known. It doesn't meaningfully change what they're about, nor dumb down their grimdarkness. If anything, it heightens it, because then the Drukhari would only be doing this out of Sadism. They had agency in how they would interact with each other and the wider galaxy, and they chose Being Assholes.
      Same with the Idoneth Deepkin. GW COULD have simply written them as being pirates and raiders because it's easy. Or that they resent the surface world, possibly due to Teclis/Tyrion, and do it out of spite. Or they're an expansionist empire, who believe all the realms were their birthright as the eldest of the elves (in this setting, at least). But no, they're just soul-parasites, who need to raid against their will.

    • @leonardomarquesbellini

      @@Bluecho4 hard disagree, even if Deldar are best when they do evil shit because they're pricks they need to have the underline tone of it being a necessity, because it's the basis for their origins in Slaanesh's excess. Pain and torture is a necessity, yes, but it's a necessity they go way beyond meeting due to their debauched nature, it's excessive and the kind of stuff that you'd need from the remnants of the society that birthed the God of Excess.

    • @levongevorgyan6789
      @levongevorgyan6789 2 года назад +33

      @@Bluecho4 But then that would ruin the Eldar as a whole. What, the Dark Eldar continue doing the same exact things that got their race nearly eradicated and they somehow survive? By hiding in the Web Way? Why don't the other Eldar do it.
      No, the Eldar are a dying race as a whole. Their souls are endangered by Slaanesh. That is the basis of their lore. The Craftworlders use Spirit Stones and discipline to resist and avoid her. The Harlequins are protected by a god of their own. The Exodites use Spirit Stones and their connection to their worlds as protection. The Dark Eldar needed a way to resist Slaanesh. And since their whole schtick is being the evil space elves, they obviously can't go the rout of the other Eldar. So they raid and slaughter and do everything Slaanesh likes to distract her from them.
      The Idoneth are their own thing, that does indeed seem like GW wanting to reinterpret the Dark Eldar, trying to make sympathetic Dark Eldar, probably for the drama and grimdarkness. You can cheer Space Marines or Orcs or even Tyrannids slaughtering Dark Eldar. They're irredemable, even the Chaos Marines are more sympathetic. But the Idoneth don't enjoy their deeds, they do terrible things because they have to for survival.

    • @farseeraradrel4808
      @farseeraradrel4808 Год назад +11

      I would even add that the Idoneth brings freedom of interpretation to how they soul-raids that the Drukhari can't. Drukhari has to be evil about it, because...well, they're the DARK ELDAR, to begin with.
      Idoneth can any way they want. Wanna play an Enclave that tries to be peaceful and moral about the soul-raiding, take the Ionrach who tries to minimize their attack on fellow Order factions. Wanna see the raids as a form of martial honour and indulge in battle-lust? Take the Fuèthan. And then you have Enclave (or can create your own) for everything in the middle.

    • @HeinrichKonig
      @HeinrichKonig 8 месяцев назад +1

      *Craftworlds -->* Their souls are already partly forefit, meaning it's nearly impossible for them to link with a soulstone. Doing so requires a particular ritual with a ridiculously minute chance of success.
      *Maiden Worlds -->* At that point you have to ask why the whole eldar race doesn't join the maiden worlds. Same with the Harlequins. It's an inconsistency shared by the entire faction.
      *Feeding off positive feelings instead -->* Slaanesh represents excess and escalation, so any positive feelings that are cultivated would have to eventually become too much to handle, resulting in negative feelings. All excess ultimately results in pain.

    I have read a fan-fic about an Idoneth Deepkin faction which has an interesting concept. They make a pact with other cities being like: "Listen, we help you establish yourselves, and we may protect you. But in turn everyone who is about to die (old age, disease, etc) goes to the towers we built next to your town. We then offer assisted, painless suicide and take your souls. Instead of going to f*** Nagash we offer a form of reincarnation instead, as your soul matter is implanted into our aelves."
    So instead if soul pirates they act like ferrymen of the death or the wild hunt in older stories, collecting those marked by death. After all people die ever day and the smart shepard does not skin his sheep.
    Quite the interesting concept and it was written in a nice short story exploring several rammifications for the ID and the cities they cooperate with.

    "The ocean can be a colourful place"
    Sure, if you're within 10 metres of the surface for the really bright colours and 150m for everything except shades of blues. That's why many predatory species in the deeper parts of the ocean are black or red - very few creatures at those depths can actually see red because it's one of the first to disappear in any depth of water. That's also why you see sharks, dolphins and some other marine predators have countershading. When your eyes are adapted for a marine life it makes a sharks belly hard to see when silhouetted against the surface and it's back against the fathomless deep.
    I...I mean... marine biology is _okay_ it's not like its super cool or the closest we have to alien life or anything

    You forgot one of the best parts of the Idoneth Deepkin's lore, that being the various enclaves (sub factions basically) live in not just generic fantasy oceans but also many of them inhabit the seas of the various realms with such seas reflecting the nature of their respective realms. Such as the seas of the realm of death being oily and blackened or the seas of the realm of Ghur being full of the most ferocious beasts or even boiling oceans of the realm of fire! In fact the ocean that was accidentally drained by the skaven was one of the realm of death's, which is how Nagash found out about the Idoneth Deepkin's existence in the first place, as ironically it was one of the more Isolationist (i.e. don't talk to their fellow enclaves very much) Idoneth Deepkin enclave that was exposed from the drainage.
    And the Idoneth Deepkin from each respective realm's oceans reflect those realms in some ways which is even more customization options!

    One of my favourite things about the Idoneth is that their personalities can be influenced by what soul they are given. For example: Dhom-Hain soul raids often prey on Orcs. While pretty bad and lacking in quality, the abundance of these souls usually make up for this. That, combined with the fact that most people wouldn’t mind them getting rid of a few Orcs, you’re probably wondering "Why don’t the Idoneth just raid Orcs?"
    Well, remember what I said about souls affecting personality?
    Apparently, over multiple applications, the fury and savagery of the greenskins seems to have partly filtered through to the enclaves Namarti caste. Many of them now seem to revel in the fighting and violence of battle just like an Orc, which only adds to the bad reputation the Dhom-Hain have among the other enclaves.
    Considering that these are elves, 99% of them having TTS Vulkan's fits is probably just barely better than death for them.

Some like the Ionrach dislike having to reave souls and are mostly open to working with outsiders against Chaos. Then you have the Fuethan who are murder-crazy, or the Mor'phann who just want to be left alone as they vibe to underwater gothic trance music. There's a wide variety of motive and personality to them than just "edgy must murder to survive", even though it still fits.

    There are a lot of Idoneth in Hysh still, since it is the home realm and all, but they try to avoid raiding Lumineth because they are fucking terrified of Teclis. I think Volturnos is the last living "first generation" Idoneth that was around before they moved to the sea floor. Volturnos is untold millennia old (there is a chance that my memory sucks on this one). They yoinked Teclis's soul lantern, which he used to extract the souls from Slaanesh, because they wanted to use it to try and cure themselves but it didn't go so well or they have not figured it out yet. I don't know if Telcis even cares about it anymore. Truth be told, I don't know if they have gotten all the elves souls out of Slaanesh or if they threw their hands up at some point and said "Good enough. I'm bored. Lets go home". In truth, I don't even know what the hell the Lumineth and Teclis even feel about the Idoneth in current AoS.

      the soul lantern was last used by morathi to journey into Slaanesh to find & eat the souls of the Pheonix lords which is still in Slaanesh as Morathi lost after getting bisected in half by Aenarion. Teclis & Grungi see them as the poor abused children that Teclis fuck over while the Lumineth and Idoneth have a weird brotherhood-ish because chaos but Lumineth underneath see them selfish cowards while the Idoneth see them as the privilege golden boy to the Mage-god. it like an older brother with a rougher childhood & younger brother who more successful

Karl Franz (praise be his name) says in a Total War voice line he’s done many morally questionable things for his country but it’s out of love for his nation and people he does it. Same for characters like Teclis, Volkmar, and arguably even some “evil” characters like Vlad con Carstein.
      With that being said, in that context I love it when someone is just an unrelenting piece of shit like Nagash.

    The newer Age of Sigmar factions have some of the best models GW has EVER made. I only hesitate on buying them because I;m not sure I can find other people who play it and because I'm worried that GW could can some of these factrions if they don't sell well as the game gets new editions. They ignore the Xeno factions in the 40k so what are the odds of them providing long term support to non-human factions in a game I'd wager is much smaller.

    • @navilluscire2567
      @navilluscire2567 Год назад

      That's my fear also, right now it seems that atleast with AOS while certainly the Stormcast and Sigmar gets most of the love it isn't nearly as unbelievable biased as with 40k's Imperium and SPACE marines or even Warhammer Fantasy's insistance with ignoring the existence of almost anything that exists outside of the "Old World" (i.e. Fantasy NOT-Europe), with more particularly seemingly hating to acknowledge the existence of *the "Southern Realms"* and focused infuriatingly on basically just Fantasy *"NOT-Northern-Europe"* 98% of the time. Oh, and them basically shunning the entirety of the eastern hemisphere like they were some *"redheaded stepchildren"* for decades!
      But anyway, little rant aside, *There is a real sense at a moment for a more evenly distributed amount of lore and story love in the AOS setting for all faction from GW.* (Stormcast not withstanding..)
      That said I honestly hate that they named it Age of SIGMAR, like them basically saying f*ck everyone else, this is Sigmar's story or age. It just gives me that feeling that they'll ultimately treat every other character or faction in the world as secondary sidekicks to that dude's show...at best.
