    You know what really got to me with the ending of this movie? The world that Shinji and his friends escape to is our real world, with all of its real problems: Climate Change, Corruption, War, Poverty, but compared to where they came from, it's like waking up in a paradise. It made me feel like no matter what happens, we should treasure our world and not take it for granted. We should love it and try to do our very best for it. I dunno. Something about that was very beautiful to me.
    EDIT: All these climate deniers commenting on this message are super fucking pathetic. Be my guest and stick your head in the sand if you want. You do that over the summer, it will probably kill you anyway.

    A wonderful analysis with an impactful send-off! One design Easter egg I’d like to add is that the shape of the Gaius spear (right before it pierced Unit-01) is an inverted shape of the original spear from End of Eva. Rather than twisted in the middle and open on the ends, this time the middle is the pocket; the ends are twisted together, much like a story with a finite, conclusive beginning and end :)

    This movie resonated with me heavily. Both on an artistic level and a relatable one. I stuggled with depression, and occasionally it likes to rear its ugly head. As someone who has been a fan of Evangelion since I was twelve, this series has been with me for a huge portion of my life (currently 31 years old). Through that I took a lot of time to look at Anno himself, and understood the pain of feeling as though nothing I did mattered. Wanting to die, but afraid of pain. A direct parallel to Anno himself in that regard. So when I saw this movie, I could feel Anno imprinting himself onto Shinji. This is a genuinely positive film, which is odd for Evangelion, I admit. But seeing how Anno himself grew and overcame his despair, I can understand why he went this route. Even Gendo's Impact was something beautiful as opposed to the dreary and cruel Third Impact in End of Evangelion. This movie FEELS different, and I can feel Anno trying to do exactly what you said, tie everything together as a changed man. This film, despite the over abundance of CGI, is a genuine emotional experience each time I watch it. And frankly? It makes me happy to see Anno himself is able to reach a happy conclusion to a series he has struggled with for a large portion of his career. If this is truly the END of the end of Evangelion, I say thank you Anno. Not only have you beautifully illustrated your struggle, but your victory. And this movie should be just that, a light to people who are struggling.

      Evangelion, is ultimately triggering to me. As not only does it trigger my grief for my childhood friend, but also the social isolation of Quarantine, as well as my own adolescent trauma as well. Admittedly, I made the mistake of watching the End of Evangelion first before viewing the series, as much of the fandom said it to be a better ending than episodes 25 and 26. Big mistakes. EoE triggered me on such a monumental scale, that it gave me nightmares about the Third Impact. To make matters worse, I viewed it right after the suicide of my childhood friend, and right before the Pandemic hit the United States. As you can imagine, I became paranoid.
      Shinji was a coping mechanism, for everything that was going on, as everything that had happened to me was in layman's terms, a "Psychological Domino effect", all of which I was forced to cope with during Quarantine with little to no therapy whatsoever, making it all the more difficult. During that time, I felt so sorry for Shinji, that I wanted to die for him, in the delusion I could sacrifice my happiness for him, feeling my fate was inescapable. Moreover, at one point in time, I was just like Shinji, that being during high school, wherein I was a "loser" and a target for those to belittle me.
      I sought emotional refuge with the Evangelion fandom to cope with the events that have happened. They claimed that Evangelion was supposedly a cure for depression. I learned this during Lockdown, and of course, I was afraid of undergoing depression again, so I took their word for it; let Evangelion consume me in spite of how triggering it was to me, in the hopes I would no longer be alone, that being part of the fandom could help me feel like a part of a community in all the pandemical pandemonium. Little did I know that instead of a house of intellectuals, it would be a den of degenerates.
      For over two years, I have been cyberbullied by the Evangelion fandom for my depression and trauma. It's the ultimate irony. A fandom, dedicated to praising a series that portrays the cost and trauma and depression, downplayed my own. Much like Anno after he worked on the series, I received hate speech and death threats, especially when I told them how much I related to Shinji and hated Evangelion because of how much it brought me pain. To add insult to injury, they turned my cry for help, titled "Message in a Bottle", into a copypasta to spite me. To make matters worse, they even created a rumor of me being a zoophile as well as a pedophile merely based on gossip surrounding my past, even blamed me for the suicide of my childhood friend. Never since High School have I felt so humiliated.
      I hate myself because I hate Evangelion. I hate how I couldn't achieve the same absolution, the same self-love, the same closure, and the same resolution, and enlightenment as Shinji did in the original series, and I hate how I was made the outcast, and treated like one by the fandom in spite of my attempts to find acceptance.
      In spite of the cyber bullying I’ve endured for over a year from the Evangelion fandom, I keep coming back to them, to try and stand up for myself. But it always ends in more emotional damage on my end. They keep saying my trauma and depression are “all in my head” and I’m afraid.
      I just want to prove to them that my trauma and depression are real, and not fake like they accused me of, because if it’s real, then at least I know I can get better. I feel insecure about my own mentality. What if they’re right? What if my depression is fake and I never even knew? What if all my triggers are somehow wired in a way that they’re not even there? What if everything I had felt and experienced during Lockdown was a figment of my imagination and I really am clinically insane?
      Thus, I often question if I am beyond salvation, whether my fate has been sealed, as I have witnessed much horror that shattered my soul.
      I've been trying to contact Hideaki Anno since 2020, but heard nothing from him. I have this belief that if I seek his counsel, he might have the answers for me.

      @@hawkeyenextgen7117Look I know that this is 7 months old, but to be honest everybody has their own different opinions and resignations with the Evangelion franchise. I completely understand how you must have been feeling while going through all that. If you really didn’t enjoy how it was executed then it’s completely fine. I’m also sorry about the lost of your childhood friend. I see the Neon Genesis series and The End Of Evangelion movie as a message to Anno’s emotional state at the time he was struggling with his depression, and how the Rebuild film series is his way of saying he’s learned from the struggles he went through during those times. And as far as for you, I think it’s really important for you to express your deepest emotions to the people you have around you that care for you health. Don’t be ashamed of the mental state you’ve endured for so long. And remember it’s never too late to ask for help.

    Because unlike everyone else by the end, Asuka doesn't really find her place in a world without Eva's

    And she is a massive component to the whole story

      @blake32k Год назад +7

      @@alexdhamp The ending scene was deliberately read by the voice actors as non-romantic. It was a direction not to speak their lines as though the characters are romantically involved. I do not feel as though Shinji was stolen (though I will not lie, I also wanted Shinji and Asuka to end up together.) Since the lack of a direct romantic reading leaves it (As many things in Evangelion) open to interpretation as romantic, friendly, or even familial (which I think of as more "hey I was close with your mother and father, so I'm like an aunt who's not related to you.)
      Conversely, there was some belief about Kensuke and Asuka being hinted at as a couple, but this as well was even more directly countered by staff saying that Kensuke acts more as a father figure to Asuka. And this makes the scene of him patting her head in the metaphysical memory space a literal depiction of their relationship, Kensuke comforting a child version of Asuka.
      However I also don't really fully agree with the other folk replying, since Asuka and Shinji are incredibly alike. The difference is in the image they project as a result of their traumas. I think that a relationship between them prior to this movie, and without any supplemental growth *would* be toxic, but by the end of this movie, they've worked to recognize their faults and aren't the same people who would have been toxic. The things keeping them from being together are- if not solved, at least being worked on. I think as long as they continue to better themselves as people, they could make it work.

    I felt that the fight on the film sets was also a nice parallel to instrumentality in the show where Shingi witnessed and himself played out events on a stage. I felt that this movie was an excellent conclusion, while the narrative is different to the show it hits the same points. Like a real world myth that might exist in multiple tellings, some so far removed from one another as to be seemingly completely different stories, but are somehow inexplicably still the same.

    The thought that Eva could ever have a true ending and finally achieve closure was a dream that I never thought I'd ever see. I have never been so pleasantly surprised. The original TV run, End of Eva, and then the Rebuild series were works of art in their own right, but this conclusion so beautifully sets them them to rest that I cannot call it anything short of a masterpiece. I was first introduced to Eva as a gangly, awkward teenager. The series and the characters within have grown alongside me, and now at last they have matured to a point where they have accepted the real world as it is. Perhaps I can as well.

I've watched the movie about 10 times already and I cry every time. I was feeling extremely slumpy tonight, struggling to sleep, and boy am I up to late considering I work in like 6 hours. But watching this brought me to tears yet again, and I feel a bit of weight lifted off my shoulders. I hope one day I can create something to express myself, and to be proud of, and maybe one day i will. I've been working on some vocal covers including some evangelion songs like Kom Susser Tod and Thanatos: If I can't be yours. If evangelion taught me anything before the rebuilds it was that the pursuit of happiness is worth striving for even if you may never find it, but the rebuilds concluded that it may even take a couple more decades but if you keep at it, and keep getting back up you will one day. Much love man, and thanks for the great video.

    I am so happy that Evangelion ended the way it did. As soon as I heard about Anno's story and his depression, I immediately knew Eva was an allegory for his own life. And I couldn't bear to watch. I suffer from depression, and watching Anno exhibit his own depression through the story made me hate it mostly because it hit way too close to home and reminded me of my own disfunction. Watching 3.0 and understanding that Anno was also relapsing with his own mental issues was absolutely heartbreaking and discouraging to me. Since I saw that movie, I've learned to deal with my own depression in much the same way Anno seems to have learned to deal with his--through connection with friends, family, and the world around us. I didnt want to watch this new film as i was afraid of what i was going to see. I was tired of Anno's depressing stories. But getting to see Shinji earn his happy ending, and Anno as well, that fills me with so much joy. I've still got a long ways to go, but I'm seriously getting better, and I'm filled with determination that I'll find my happiness like Shinji and Anno seem to have.

    28:10 Kaworu never says that everyone's stuck in a loop. He says thay he is the one that keeps on dieing and resurrecting on the Moon. He never talks about the world having "reset" in the past, as the loop theory stated. He died in the past, and at a certain point he met his name as a child, and then he writes Shinji's name in the Book of Life (and only his name) so that he gets to meet him again in the future. Shinji doesn't remember it until the end of this movie because his childhood memories were manipulated, as Fuyutsuki told him in the third movie.
    The fact that we find out that Shikinami is a clone should make it clear that these characters are not the ones from the original show. Also, the Rebuild movies have a different lore, with more Adams, the Golgota Cross, the Nabucodonosor Key and a completely different way the Impact occour; these are major differences between these movies and the original, there's just no way they're part of the same timeline.
    A lot of people say this movie has proved the loop theory, but it's actually the exact opposite. As Rei tells Shinji in their final dialogue, time cannot be rewinded, it can only move forward. There is no loop.

    I literally (FINALLY) watched this film for the first time yesterday on imax and I have to say that it was well worth the wait!!! Even putting it aside and holding off from watching it on Amazon. This film was a damn MASTERPIECE! I am turning 38 next week and have watched evangelion since I was 15 fresh into high school! It was my transition from a more childish genre of anime like dragonball, robotech (US Macross) sailor moon and even pokemon to a more mature and intellectual genre of anime. At the time since I was still young and young minded I absolutely loved evangelion yet still couldn’t grasp it the same way I have been as I grew up with it and let me tell you all it has been quite a ride! The series, the films the remakes and everything in between! This one specifically has become everything to me and it almost makes me feel so many different emotions at a personal level the same way that Ano has felt I’m sure as he was making and experiencing this. This man deserves everything and I am truly truly thankful for the hard work, the emotions and the life that he’s been able to show me throughout the years! If this is his last one then I would be sad but I know that he truly deserves to relax and enjoy the rest of his life a truly happy one!

    I much prefer the original anime, I’m going to have to watch the rebuild movies again because boy the last half of the last movie got confusing.
    From the EVA Infinities (what are they? People transformed?), to pocket universes, to multiple new spears, the Golgotha Object, to Asuka now being a clone (god I hate that), to Mari being called “Mary Iscariot” (is that a biblical reference? A blend of Mary Magdalene/Judas Iscariot?) Or is he calling her a betrayer, as we see later that she was initially a part of their team when they first started.
    And so much other stuff that I can’t think of, I’m going to have to watch it again and pay more attention.

    Originally I thought the last movie would grow on me like EoTV and EoE did, and while I agree on this analysis and the nuances of Anno’s direction and experience, I can’t help but think that the narrative blindspots of the tetralogy are far too noticeable, especially because the last film solves them with some convenience or are relegated to a footnote for clarity’s sake.
    Yes, it is closure, but it’s one that feels like a commitment or like closure for closure’s sake. I don’t hate the movie, its message or Anno. I simply didn’t like it that much…

    • @daddygrasshopper
      @daddygrasshopper Год назад +3

      I agree. I think the 3rd film is really a mess because it doesn’t do a adequate or complete job setting up… so in the final film we end up with too many moments that don’t really feel like direct hits, and some big massive exposition dumps as crutches.

    Gorgeous video, but after watching it all I have questions about Mari.
    I can't understand why she's the one who at the end frees Shinji and runs with him up that staircase or why she's capable of going into the anti-universe.
    Another thing about her that I may have missed is that, despite being Gendo's classmate, she hasn't aged at all.
    Anyway, great job for the wonderful video and for the passion it contains.

    • @tanepukenga1421
      @tanepukenga1421 11 месяцев назад +3

      That's mostly due to her development which started with an exec going "Anno! I want another hot chick in this anime and I'm not taking no for an answer!". From there the writers were essentially told to shoehorn her in (and because Anno was having difficulty writing her with the pre-established relationships between characters all somewhat based off himself) and Enokido took over writing her. Before that she had over 40 rewrites of her character and development sheets due to conflicting instructions from Anno to the point people in the production were asking if he was trying to get them to make a character with multiple, conflicting personalities.
      Pretty much she's another one of the SEELE group's children, like Yui was. She was the friend that got her and Gendo together and later a doctor on Project E where she ended up with the Curse of the EVA's (I'm guessing that's when her non-existent, SEELE mama got soul-napped?). That is literally as far as they got in writing her background. As for the rest, she ended taking on the symbolism of a future. She's the stand in for all future relationships, friendships or positive human interaction that could occur to shinji. The possibilities he accepted in the end, which Gendo couldn't.

    • @nathanlamaire
      @nathanlamaire 9 месяцев назад +1

      She's basically a plot hole filler (good or bad I'd left it for your judgement). Since almost every single key character is developed toxic, it'd be relatively difficult to make sense for these characters to develop healthy relationships in the end.

I watched the series mainly for the brilliant animation but this final chapter in the series was by far my favourite of them all. 35:56. That's not a blast shield, it's the belly/partial fuselage of a space shuttle. Because the belly of a space shuttle needs to
    withstand a shitton of heat on re-entry. Which makes it perfect for 1.0's situation where it needed something fast to take the energy blast from Ramiel.
    NERV didn't have time to make a properly researched shield, so they tore the belly off one of their space shuttles.
    And in 3.0+1.0, WILLE just scavenged what they found from old NERV bases.
    I've always loved that detail.

    I won't say this movie is bad, but I personally think it's nowhere near as good as the original series/EoE. First, they use a whole bunch of deus ex machina story beats to bring closure but in the end only open up more issues -- the key of nebuchadnezzar, the anti universe -- all of that seems shoehorned in to make it feel more like sci-fi fantasy. The real flaw with this movie though, imo, is how bad 3.0 was. I genuinely think 3.0 completely lost the plot and its direction, resulting in a contrived mess. The most glaring issue here is that the characters - in the original, flawed but lovable - become ONLY flawed, yet it seems we're still supposed to love them. They handle shinji's return in perhaps the worst way possible, and then blame him when their decision to withhold all information from him results in him almost triggering the fourth impact. Comparatively, 3.0 + 1.0 is far better but I don't think it was possible to fix the issues presented in 3.0

    A fantastic review for a truly beautiful film. All the background knowledge and meta analysis is much appreciated too.
    Not since I saw EoE as a kid after buying coercing mum into buying my first ever DVD; have I felt this way about a film. Or really any artistic work. And it came at a time when myself and so many others were really reaching for any kind of optimism.
    Eva is no longer something I tell people "hey you should watch this, it starts amazing and then the new movies are pretty good and there's one left..."

Definitely feel the EoE movie was a better ending because in life moving past one problem doesn’t make everything better, and I really did not like that they tried to give Gendo a deeper reason for what he did as I think that goes against some of the themes of the Og show.

    My one complaint with the movie.; just the general reaction to Shinji trying to go fight Gendo. They give him a DSS choker and some of them try to stop him because they're scared he's going to cause another impact AS IF THERE ISN'T ONE ALREADY IN PROGRESS RIGHT THERE AND THEN. The world is already ending. What in the ever loving hell could Shinji possibly conceivably do at that point to make the situation any worse than that? End the world harder? At that point you may as well just toss the living apocalypse at the problem and hope for the best. What's even better is while this is going on Mari is right there turning herself into the exact same Appocalypse machine as Shinji but intentionaly and nobody even blinks at it.
