  • Embark on a journey with me as I fly with Fiji Airways from Nadi Airport to Wellington, New Zealand on their impressive Boeing 737 MAX 8. Take in the stunning views of the Wellington Harbour from the comfort of the cabin.
The 737 MAX 8 is one of the variants of the Boeing 737 MAX series, a narrow-body airliner manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is intended to replace the 737-800 and offers seating for 162 to 200 passengers in a typical two-class configuration. The MAX 8 has a range of 3,850 nautical miles and is equipped with more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B engines, aerodynamic improvements, and airframe modifications compared to earlier 737 designs. The first delivery of the MAX 8 was made to Malindo Air in May 2017. The 737 MAX 8 is designed to offer improved efficiency and performance compared to its predecessor, the 737-800.
Nadi International Airport is the main international airport of Fiji and a hub for the South Pacific islands. It is located on the western side of the main island Viti Levu, near the cities of Nadi and Lautoka. It handles around 97% of international visitors to Fiji, 86% of whom are tourists. The airport is the main hub of Fiji Airways and its subsidiary Fiji Link. The airfield was built by New Zealand in 1939-1940, paid for by the British colonial authorities, and used by the United States Army Air Forces in the Pacific War. After the war, it was handed over to New Zealand and then to the Fijian government in 1979. Nadi Airport was selected as the major airport for Fiji mainly due to its location on the drier west coast of Viti Levu. In 1999, Fiji Airports Limited was established as a state-owned enterprise to operate and administer airports in Fiji, including Nadi. A $130m modernisation of the passenger terminal facilities was started in 2013.
Wellington International Airport is located in the suburb of Rongotai, Wellington and is a joint venture between Infratil and the Wellington City Council. It is the second busiest airport in New Zealand, handling a total of 3,455,858 passengers in the year ending June 2022. The airport is a hub for Air New Zealand and Sounds Air and has links to many New Zealand destinations and major cities in eastern Australia. It operates a single 2,081-metre runway and handles various aircraft movements. The airport is located on a small 110-hectare site on the Rongotai isthmus and is bordered by residential and commercial areas to the east and west, and by Wellington Harbour and Cook Strait to the north and south. Due to strong and gusty winds caused by the channelling effect of Cook Strait, landings at Wellington can sometimes be rough and turbulent, even in larger aircraft.
