Dealing with Slugs on Hydroponic Crops

- Slugs are attracted to leafy crops. In addition to searching for slugs on the foliage, hydroponic growers may also lift the tank cover and search for slugs hiding under the cover and in or on the net pots.
Growers should ask their local health department if there have been documented cases of rat lungworm disease caused by accidentally ingesting a slug when eating uncooked produce. Rat lungworm disease causes eosinophilic meningitis.

My slug jug is just a container with some salt, no water. Drop in the slug give it a shake no smell and instant desiccated slugs….

I've seen slugs on the roots of my hydroponic tomatoes. I assumed they wouldn't each much, but perhaps some controls would be helpful.

Rat-lungworm Disease... wow, that is a new one to me. I had these issues when I was growing mushrooms. I opted for a different growing method in a different location because screaming at them didn't seem to work ;-) I must say, I know exceedingly more about slugs than I did 10 minutes ago. Fortunately, our outdoor garden hasn't had these issues. Occasional bouts with fungus gnats are my only real nemesis indoors. Always a pleasure to see you, Dr. Kratky. I hope all is well in Washington, I enjoyed my brief time living there.

We have used the old flat beer trap. Had no idea there were that many slugs around the garden.

I have so many slugs where I live that I accidentally stepped on one that was over 5 inches long. It was so round, and long, I thought it was a snake, but it was a slug.

Fascinating, I noticed a lot of slugs when traveling in the Pacific northwest. I started growing my greens indoors, and no longer am competing against bugs and such. It is amazing no matter where one lives, there are challenges to gardening.

Hello Dr Kratky, can you please do a video on how to deal with algae in the systems? I have invested and setup dozens of kratky bins and surrounded them in insulated foil bubble wrap locking out all sunlight, however some of the seedlings were in bins that had not been covered and grew algae on the roots. After transplanting into the blocked-out clean bins they transferred all algae contaminating them. I just can't seem to get a handle on this little green machine :)

My Granny always had a shallow bowl with beer next to her crops, the slugs crawl into it and drown ;-)
Wow! I hadn’t thought about that problem in years. I had family in the Hawaii and heard about it while visiting. We don’t have many slugs nor snails in semi arid climate where I live. Grasshoppers! Dang their hides!
Thanks for the material you're providing us! Somewhere else I found this solution for keeping slugs at bay: glueing waterproof sandpaper (I don't remember if fine- or coarse-grained one) to the border of the pot. Basically it's a slug-version of walking barefeet on broken glass, so those pests will stay away from it. I haven't tried it myself but it sounds like a reasoable method, at least on paper.

I've heard of beer-traps as attractors (and now shadow-traps as well), and copper, salt, sharp egg-shells and a lack of shadow as repellents/deterrents. Are there, additionally, certain plant-types that repel slugs? ..e.g. mint or lavender or the nightshade family?

@@growkratky5558 How does the slug "know" to go on a certain difficult path to reach a head of lettuce? Is this a chemical (smell) signal from the lettuce-plant? If it is, then would the strong smell of mint etc. throw-off its senses?

No, I am not familiar with trace elements for insect control. Hopefully, someone will share some insight into this.

@@growkratky5558 I’ve lived in Arizona for 63 years and never seen a slug here. (I have seen them on property my family owns in Oregon though). Ironically, gardening books written by local master gardeners specifically for gardening in our desert climate, recommend copper bands around raised bed gardens to deter slugs🙃
The good doctor needs a couple of chickens or ducks. A good biological slug control.
