Hi thanks so much from south africa,do you have a solution for little black bugs im not sure how to describe them but they sit between the green plants,i think they have a red like dot on their backs or front.thank you New sub here🤗
We use the 'slug hunt method'. This involves simply going out after darkness with a head light on and picking them up and putting them in a suitable receptacle (a jar with as lid). Night by night the number you find goes down. Using a decoy area of rotting foliage attracts the slugs and concentrates them in one area making hunting even more efficient - but watch out for the rouges who go elsewhere!
Jacob, I love watching your gardening videos. It is heartening to see the young generation being interested in gardening. Young man, you are doing a lot of good for the world. Best wishes.
I have tried egg shells and coffee but neither worked for me. Then I discovered garlic spray and it's fantastic. Simply bring approximately 10 roughly chopped garlic cloves to a boil and then simmer for 10 mins. Leave to cool over night and make sure to put a lid or top over the pan or pot you use otherwise the smell the next morning . Next morning filter out the garlic and put in spray bottle and there you have it . And finally ONLY spray last thing before going to bed otherwise the smell is really bad. But when you go into the garden the next day the smell is gone.

I have taken on a new hobby - GARDENING. I always believed I did not have a Green Thump - couldn't grow a thing. Now that I am exploring the idea and enjoying it, your tips on killing snails and slugs were great. Simple, and ingrediants were already around the house. Hello from Pune, India, thank you very much for a detailed video, shall definitely try it in my organic terrace garden, quite fed up with slugs and snails, eating up all the veggie saplings.keep up the good work!!!!
Thanks for the foil tip- was going mad because I already lost some broccoli & lettuce to THE LITTLE BUGGERS and nobody around here sells copper tape. It's a relief to know that something I already have could be used instead to try and save what's left!
I had a slug problem. One day I just randomly hung up a wild bird feeder kept it full, the little birds flocked to my yard for molasses soaked sunflower seeds, (their fav) while in the yard they would forge for bugs, grubs & slug eggs in my garden, as long as there is food in the bird feeder I have no slugs. It's just that easy your all welcome..
lucky for you. I hung bird feeder in the middle of my garden. The birds ate all the seeds and sprung many on the ground. May be they have too much food. I got plenty of bugs, grasshoppers, and snails in my garden, don't see birds eat them. I saw them they bath on the bird bath during the hot days. I pick a full Walmart bag of snails and gave it to my neighbor who has 20 hens. I was hopping the chicken will eat them. Turns out, the hens eat a few, but left the rest of the snails crawling all over the patios. The neighbor has to sweep them into a bag and threw into the trash can. 😒
But the slugs and snails 🐌 mainly come out at night when the birds 🐦 are in their nest resting through out the night. I cannot get the idea. But if it works for you then congrats. 👍
Your plants look really healthy. I think the other thing that keeps the slugs and snails away is having very healthy plants. Keep them topped up with fertiliser to keep them strong and the snails and slugs will go for the frail and sickly plants.
You’re so sweet and I appreciate your helping. Never had slugs before but I see a new one every night.. thank you so much! Hope you’re doing good. From USA :)
Have had excellent results using coffee grounds to control slugs/snails here in northern Việt Nam. Generally, I use a low grade coffee as opposed to used grounds. Also adds nitrogen I have been told.
If you’re making your own garlic and chilli spray, it’s ESSENTIAL than you filter it through some cheesecloth or similar BEFORE adding it to your spray-bottle, as any ‘bits’ will block your spray-head and it’ll be ruined forever. 😬👍
Hi I used curry powder around my Lupins to stop the slugs . They haven’t been touched. Just sprinkled it on the ground but make sure it’s not windy as it will burn the leaves if it comes in contact with your plant .
Same here.. just planted cucumbers yesterday and when I checked this morning most of the plants just standing without leaves 😴😴😴 I thought the birds were visiting my vegetables garden before me this morning lol 😁

Hey there good job with loving the garden! FYI though snails need calcium to maintain shells so eggshells will just give them a treat before they eat...coffee grounds should be only used on acid loving plants or you will unbalance the natural ph. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Lenore! Although calcium is very insoluble so it would be hard for the snails to absorb it from the egg shells, also they just really don't like crawling over them cos they're so pointy. Also used coffee grounds don't affect the pH much at all, I used to think that as well but its actually a myth! They are acidic, not only around 6.5 I think. Cheers & have a good one!

Thank you, you solved the puzzle. I was dumping used tea leaves on my flower bed. The flowers (marigolds) far from tea leaves are badly damaged by slugs. Tea leaves might work as well as coffee grounds!
Jacob, I have never heard of using coffee grounds for the caffeine factor. The slugs were horrible in my raised bed garden last year. I am going to give that tip a try in the coming year to see how it works for me. I have also never heard of using the aluminium foil. Very interesting. Happy Gardening! Catherine
Hi there from east coast of Maryland, USA.Excellent video. Clear , concise, and great variety of content. I can go right out today and some them to use in my backyard. I have a nasty slug problem and really don’t want to use a lot of artificial chemicals. Good job! Thank you so much. God Bless.
Yes tried eggshells and coffee grounds to no avail. That aluminium foil looks very interesting!!!! It’s snails in our broccoli that is our problem 😡😡 I will give that a go. Think I’ll spray with the garlic first, then wrap the stalk with foil.
The best results I have had is with bramble branches as a barrier. Snails and slugs will not go over, whereas they enjoyed every other system : coffee grounds, egg shells, chili powder (I'm convinced they even invited the neighbors for a barbi), garlic slowed but didn't stop. An would prefer to drink the beer myself at the end of a gardening session!
Mix up a little baking soda, water and a few drops of dawn into a spray bottle. Great friendly repellent for snails, miners, ampids, and other nasty crawlers. It repels them from your plant rather than cruelly killing them. Causes no harm to plants or to your outside critters.. They'll go in hunt of something baking soda free.
Hey there ...im padma from Andhra pradesh, south india . tq so much for the wonderful tips...although I dont have a veggie garden..I just found too many slugs suddenly in my yard with huge outdoor trees...never had them b4...will try these tips..!tq👍🌝
Some great ideas. I'm not sure if the copper is producing an electric charge. Invertebrates have a biology that makes them absorb copper a high rate because it is normally rare in their environment. As a result exposure to raw copper causes toxicity. Owners of salt water tanks are very familiar with this. Note this toxicity applies to earthworms as well. .
Hey the beer trick does work. Past week I've removed ALOT of slugs and snails. Also started using Dawn dish soap. During the late evening. Tnx Again for the tips.
Try sprinkling fine grounded CHILLI POWDER around seedlings, plants etc, its the best repellent I have ever used. Coffee granules don't work, the slugs and snails travel over it no problem.
Aluminum foil does not work. I did exactly how you demonstrated in the video. Slugs were hiding under the foil on the soil, and also hanging upside down on the foil
Thank you for the informative video! I was searching online for information on controlling slugs. My mom and dad were telling me about how their newly-sprouted lettuce had been devoured by slugs. I told them about the methods you described. They’re hoping it works. Thank you very much from far away Canada!
I allow some of my Broccoli and cabbages to grow through Winter after they have finished producing. Next planting season uproot them and lay them on the bare garden for a few nights spraying the bed with water to encourage pests out. Any slugs and snails will crawl on to them as there is nothing else for them to eat. Early next morning I take them off the garden and drown them in deep containers of water. I continue this as I plant new seedlings. It find it very effective and low effort.
i am trying copper on plastic plant pots, or water bottles. it works, but is somewhat clumsy, and i dont want a garden full of plastic! . i found, under the prolific forgetmenots, a snail nursery, so i also have a salt bucket, cooking salt, and i toss any i find into that. But I do like the chilli powder idea, so will buy some tomorrow. I also have eggshell scattered generously, and that works, but needs to be reapplied after rain. thank you for that video, t has been an encouragement to keep on . Also, my raised wicking bed does not have any - must be too high.
From what I’ve seen copper tape almost never works if you live in a cooler climate. It may be a temperature difference effecting the copper, or just different types of slug/snails in these environments, but I have no idea. Copper also oxidises.. :P The most effective barrier iv used, is a DIY 9V DC electric fence, 2 bits of unrusting wire about 1cm apart will make them turn away every time. The issues I have in the UK is the wet weather drained my 9V batteries to fast so a more sustainable power supply would be recommended for anyone trying it. Important to note voltage matters 12V will kill the good insects whereas lower voltages will not. The idea is to deter not kill. Sure it fun to watch a slug cook to death at 12V but you don’t want to kill the insects that will help your crops. 9v is perfect. Aluminium foil I would keep away from as it will inevitably put aluminium into your soil that is not a good thing. I never use aluminium based things in my garden. :)
@@JacobsBackyardGardening They DO in fact, WORK....just rather slowly. I grind all of my eggshells into a powder, increasing the bioavailabily of calcium for the plant.
This just now popped up for me, very interesting and I’m going to be taking some notes to try for myself. New subscriber, Thanks so much for sharing this Great video 🥰
7:30 I'm unsure if you are aware, but aluminum + carbon (in soil) + water will create a galvanic reaction and aluminum will be deposited into your soil. You don't want aluminum in your soil.
Have any favourite snail control methods? Comment them below!
I set up a duel wire barrier that I connected to 9V battery. Keeps the slugs and snails out 100%.

No problem Jean! Yeah its real annoying haha. Hope it all goes well for you, cheers!
Yes! They decimated my baby marigolds :o(
I’ll definitely be trying these tips-it’s a constant battle keeping the slugs and snails under control at the My.
Awesome! Yeah it seems like it is for everyone! Cheers Geraldine & I hope they work well for you!
great tips and good job explaining things. thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, you solved the puzzle. I was dumping used tea leaves on my flower bed. The flowers (marigolds) far from tea leaves are badly damaged by slugs. Tea leaves might work as well as coffee grounds!
Sounds great!
Catherine
Yeah it surprisingly works very well! As for the foil when I first heard of it I was surprised but it does well! Cheers Catherine & have a good one!
did it work?
I use garlic powder or chilli powder sprinkled around the plants. It works very well.
Great tip! Cheers Elaine
Thank you. I’m gonna try the coffee grounds and egg shells.
No worries! Cheers & have a good one
Hi there from east coast of Maryland, USA.Excellent video. Clear , concise, and great variety of content. I can go right out today and some them to use in my backyard. I have a nasty slug problem and really don’t want to use a lot of artificial chemicals. Good job! Thank you so much. God Bless.
Thanks Donna! Hope you get on top of them, have a good one!
I like the egg shells and ground coffee idea to control slugs .. Thank you Jacob
Well both have worked well for me, its not going to work 100% of the time for everyone but its a method I like to use. Cheers Jim
Is ground coffee used or unused. Please advise.
Does not work. I am trying metal pot scrubbers this year.
@@harrinibajaj5583 Used ground coffee ..Some restaurant they give free .. I collect from my work place
Yes tried eggshells and coffee grounds to no avail.
That aluminium foil looks very interesting!!!!
It’s snails in our broccoli that is our problem 😡😡 I will give that a go.
Think I’ll spray with the garlic first, then wrap the stalk with foil.
Shared on my FB page to increase your audience. A few tips there I wasn’t aware of. Thanks
Thankyou very much Carol! No problem, cheers
Cheers, will have to give it a try
Mix up a little baking soda, water and a few drops of dawn into a spray bottle. Great friendly repellent for snails, miners, ampids, and other nasty crawlers. It repels them from your plant rather than cruelly killing them. Causes no harm to plants or to your outside critters.. They'll go in hunt of something baking soda free.
Sounds interesting. What is it about baking soda and detergent that discourages snails?
Lovely video well done . I couldn't help but notice your Roses . They are soo gorgeous!
Gday from California! Thanks for the great vid, cheers!
Hey there ...im padma from Andhra pradesh, south india . tq so much for the wonderful tips...although I dont have a veggie garden..I just found too many slugs suddenly in my yard with huge outdoor trees...never had them b4...will try these tips..!tq👍🌝
G'day Padma, glad you like them. Hope it goes well for you!
Yeah its a good one! Glad its working well for you, cheers Charles
Thanks mate I'll try the chilli and garlic one, these snails are a real nightmare..
Thanks for informations have problems with snails will definitely try them out.
Try sprinkling fine grounded CHILLI POWDER around seedlings, plants etc, its the best repellent I have ever used. Coffee granules don't work, the slugs and snails travel over it no problem.
Coffee grounds dont work
Yeah me think either. I used to work in a cafe and slugs love hiding in coffee ground.
I have used copper to no avail but now you have mentioned aluminum foil I am going to try that. Great video!
Go out when slugs are active and drop a pinch of salt on them
why does stop all of them or just the ones I put salt on?
They go out on midnight 😁before putting salt on them for sure I'll be slashed first by dad/ grandpa/ ma😂😂
ichidai sanzen daisen sekai
I will try chilli and garlic thanx , coffee and eggs, snails ate all my newly purchased and planted vegetables.
All the best
Really enjoyed this and the content is just what I need.
Thanks, much appreciated.
Thanks Ruthie, have a good one
That is my no. 1 problem in my garden the snails that eat my plants leaves. Thank you for this idea.
No worries!
Aluminum foil does not work. I did exactly how you demonstrated in the video. Slugs were hiding under the foil on the soil, and also hanging upside down on the foil
Thank you so much Jacob! I will try plenty of your remedies. Have a horrible infestation of snails and slugs!!
Cheers Debbie! Hope it goes well for you
They don't care about the eggshells or anything pointy, i've even seen them crawling across blackberry thorns
Brain Soup true
Eggshells don’t work at all
they can crawl across the edge of a razor blade
True !!! They even eat pumpkin leaves and they sting.
I've try eggshells beer and coffee.. didn't work
Thank you, very effective and right to the point. You did not waste your time or mine. Thanks again!
No problem Cecilia, glad you liked it. Cheers & have a good one!
coffee grounds don't work, neither do eggshells.
seen test videos, the snails/slugs don't even care.
I've definitely heard from many people that coffee grounds work well, eggshells are a lot more hit or miss though. Cheers & have a good one!
@@JacobsBackyardGardening that's the thing with myths, they are persistent.

I was told to bake the egg shell in the oven first, then crush it. Am trying it for this winter season, so far is working.
Thank you for the informative video! I was searching online for information on controlling slugs. My mom and dad were telling me about how their newly-sprouted lettuce had been devoured by slugs. I told them about the methods you described. They’re hoping it works. Thank you very much from far away Canada!
No worries Steven, hope they do well! Cheers & have a good one
I have a pot of coffee groundswith 3 snail trails across it
Lol
I allow some of my Broccoli and cabbages to grow through Winter after they have finished producing.
Next planting season uproot them and lay them on the bare garden for a few nights spraying the bed with water to encourage pests out. Any slugs and snails will crawl on to them as there is nothing else for them to eat. Early next morning I take them off the garden and drown them in deep containers of water.
I continue this as I plant new seedlings.
It find it very effective and low effort.
I put a toad pool in my garden and at night they come and eat the slugs!
You should try using white lime powder around what you are growing to stop them crossing around it has helped with our small garden this year
Dig down a schooner of Fosters. Once the slug catches that foul smell they will crawl over to the neighbours.
Thanks for the info am going to use the coffee to spray an my sweet peppers.2 packs of coffee can spray 300 peppers.in maybe 2 gallons of water
The copper tape does nothing to the slugs and snails in my garden they just crawl straight across it, maybe the English buggers are a hardier breed.
Ah that's a pain, hasn't failed me yet. Hahaha maybe mate, hope it goes well for you! Cheers
i am trying copper on plastic plant pots, or water bottles. it works, but is somewhat clumsy, and i dont want a garden full of plastic! . i found, under the prolific forgetmenots, a snail nursery, so i also have a salt bucket, cooking salt, and i toss any i find into that.
:)
Egg shells don't work
G'day Clare, from my experience they certainly do! Cheers & have a good one
@@JacobsBackyardGardening They DO in fact, WORK....just rather slowly. I grind all of my eggshells into a powder, increasing the bioavailabily of calcium for the plant.
Very informative and useful. Thank you from India. 🙏
Cheers Santosh
Thanks for the tips. I like the egg shell and tinfoil tip most and prefer to deter rather than kill them.
No worries Susan, glad to help out
This just now popped up for me, very interesting and I’m going to be taking some notes to try for myself. New subscriber, Thanks so much for sharing this Great video 🥰
Fantastic, Jacob thanks for this video. Im away out to put some of your tips into practice here highlands scoland. 🙌
Thank you great tip's will try in my little balcony garden
7:30 I'm unsure if you are aware, but aluminum + carbon (in soil) + water will create a galvanic reaction and aluminum will be deposited into your soil. You don't want aluminum in your soil.
Fricken awesome factual advice!!!
You are doing a wonderful job!! Should be on tv!!!
Cheers
