    Always good and detailed stuff, my friend! Bilbo's story in the books definitely deserves more recognition, for he is a loremaster, story-teller, poet and much more. Cheers, and happy Hobbit Day!

    He's also fat and then loses weight through the trials he goes through. I know that complaint is small potatoes; but being fat is part of the original Bilbo, it shows he is used to an easier lifestyle and then has to tighten the belt (literally) as they lose rations and supplies multiple times, and his jaunts/walks around the shire are nothing compared to what he has to endure on his journey to Lonely Mountain and back. So having Bilbo be skinny at the beginning does not convey the big ordeal it was for him. Seeing the physical change is an important visual aspect of his character development and arc.

  • @fermintenava5911

    The movie has probably a whole different approach to the adventure-vs-peaceful-life-debate. You can see it in the first movie, where Bilbo has an argument with Gandalf about his mother's dowry chest, wherein Gandalf advocates in favor of adventure. Contrast that with the auction in the end, where Bilbo loses a whole lot of his material possession, but seems content regardless, due to his new memories. Tolkien (as a WW1-survivor) wouldn't have put it that way, but to a modern audience, going out and meeting new people ultimately seems more desirable.
    But while I respect the effort, it still devalues Bilbo's character too much in favor of the ultimately pompous Thorin. And in the end, Bilbo is almost berated for his peacemaking efforts.

  • @alexhenry3435
    @alexhenry3435 3 года назад +2

    I liked that explanation that in the end Bilbo has become a competent adventurer, but in his heart he sees peace and the qualities of his quiet life are worth more, so parting with his portion of the treasure does not hurt

    You are right the character arc of Bilbo got crushed in the movie. But that had to happen when you try to make 3 movies out of one quite short book and put in interspecies relationships...
    But to be fair somethings are always hard to translate from a book to a movie, especialy internal thoughts or things that got narrated.
    The reason the ring is shown more prominence in the movie than in the book is quite easy to understand:
    when tolkien wrote the Hobbit he didn't intend it to be a part of middle-earth at first.
    he had to change something in later publishings to fit into the idea of beeing the prequel to LotR.
    (And let´s be honest, the film fans would totaly outrage if the mighty "One Ring" wouldn`t show any effect on his bearer after beeing show to have Bilbo corrupted in someway in the LotR-Triology)
    However, still like the books and the movie (just have to tell them apart in my head ^^)
    Have a happy Hobbitday folks!

    So I am currently reading The Silmarillion and love it but I’ve just read the part where the dwarves of Nogrod returned back and said that their kin was slain. And one action of the dwarves was the tearing of their beards. What does that mean? Do the Dwarves have a custom where they tear their beards if they lose someone?

    • @TolkienLorePodcast
      @TolkienLorePodcast  4 года назад +5

      I suspect it’s similar to the phenomenon of Biblical figures tearing their clothes in highly emotional situations. Since Dwarves have big stupendous beards tearing them is a sign of serious distress.

    The Hobbit Trilogy felt too much like the lot trilogy, which I am not surprised because there was no Divine Providence in any of the lotr movies, either. This is because even if the Hobbit Trilogy stuck to the Book with the ring's Divine Providence, it still would not connect with the lotr trilogy. Bilbo felt too much like Martin Freeman even in the first film! This reminds me of the Movie Version of Frodo acting too much like a nineteen year old, but not a fifty year old! The Hobbit Trilogy should have been called, "Thorin: The Dwarf!"

  • @oliveremmettknox7776

    Ian Holm's Bilbo Baggins in the LOTR trilogy films wasn't very different from Bilbo Baggins' personality from the LOTR books.

  • @mariyontil
    @mariyontil Год назад

    I agree that it felt like Thorin was the protagonist by the end (followed by Kíli, Tauriel, and Legolas). I was rather disappointed about the changes to the character of Bilbo. That said, I didn't mind Gandalf's words to Bilbo about mercy. I mean, in the book he spoke to Frodo about mercy and that hardly makes his arc any less. Gandalf is a Maia and a symbol of providence, so I think those words made a lot of sense. Flawed though the trilogy is (as an adaptation, I mean; if seen as separate from the source material, I found the movies very good), Riddles in the Dark was probably my favorite adapted part from the book and I thought it was really good overall.
    As for the Dwarves having weapons, later it is mentioned some had knives. I don't really mind it, for the most part, however, because, aside from the adventure with the spiders (where I did mind), Bilbo's main skill is with his wits, not with weapons. Besides, if the trolls had caught the Dwarves as they did in the book, it might have slowed the film down.

    Gollum acted too much like a Disney Character, and then he throws a rock at Bilbo. In the book, Gollum did not even throw a rock at him! The CGI for Gollum was the only good one in the trilogy. I would also add what you just said about what one of the Dwarves says about Sting, and when Gandalf is talking to Bilbo about Courage. Gandalf is an idiot and a jerk again, especially when one of the dwarves pass that bag of money to him at the beginning of the trilogy, and when they all meet Beorn! Jackson does not know how the ring effects anybody! One of my biggest complaints were all of the added characters, the ridiculous casting and design of Radagast, the ridiculous design of the Goblin King, the Spiders, and Smaug, (Smaug is way too big compared to the book)! They also made Smaug into a Scooby-Doo Villian! My other biggest complaints is that Dain Ironfoot and his pig are CGI characters, why he is riding a pig in the first place, he did not have his red axe, and that he did not kill Azog. My final biggest complaint is that basically everything in the trilogy is Computer Generated with the stupid, pointless 3D! I can go on, and on, and on! The best part of the trilogy was the soundtracks!

    • @saberhamlinconmaverickknud4821
      @saberhamlinconmaverickknud4821 4 года назад +2

      I would say that scene that you just pointed out, and that Bilbo's character is crapped on just like Frodo. I will also add the casting for Radagast, and why the heck he has bird poop on his face/beard. Also, the design and song of the Goblin King, why Smaug was too big, and that they made him into a Scooby-Doo Villain. Also, that most of the casting, design, and character changes in the Dwarves, and all of the pointless added characters. The worst parts are when Gandalf is being an idiot and rude again just like in the lotr trilogy, when he tells Bilbo about Courage, when the Dwarf tells Bilbo that Sting is not important, when Bilbo says, "Sting? That is a nice name!", that Bilbo is completely controlled by the ring, that basically everything in the trilogy was CGI, etc.

    • @morrowdimtindomiel
      @morrowdimtindomiel 4 года назад +2

      Yes. Add that they mad Smaug a wyvern, not a dragon. Tolkien knew the difference between the two. There was nothing about the goblin king or Goblin Town that rise to a level of respect for the book. I'm pretty certain that the goblin king was just a reuse of the ballchinian from Men in Black 2. I have said before, and continue to maintain, the script was written by putting five boys between 10 and 12 into a room together and listening to them say, "wouldn't it be cool if _______?" Then, all of the most ridiculous, sophmoric ideas were used. (And that's how the sand worms of Arakis ended up in the Battle of Five Armies.)

      @@morrowdimtindomiel Thank you! Nobody that I know or heard of have not like the design or size of Smaug! My favorite versions of him are Alan Lee's, Ted Nasmith's and obviously Tolkien's! The Lord of the Ring's Online Game does Goblin Town, the Goblins, and the Goblin King justice! I still think that Howard Shore's and Chance Thomas's soundtracks are still the best of all time! I agree that it was the script that was crap because there was no character development at all! The best CGI character was Gollum, but they again made him into a Disney Version of him that is mixed with an unforgivable version, just like in the lotr trilogy! Then he throws a rock at Bilbo, but he does not even do this in the book! And, somehow, Bilbo still does not decapitate him! Gandalf is a jerk, again! Those giant worms were so pointless, and they obviously do not look like that at all, even without the CGI crap! What do think about all of the added characters? I hated all of them, especially Alfred! Lol!

      @@saberhamlinconmaverickknud4821 Tolkien provided us with so many good characters, even those who barely pass through the stories. We barely see them, but we recognize them as someone familiar. Why did the script writers feel like they needed ignored or replaced with shallow or hollow characters? I found this especially true for the Hobbit movies. I have read the book a hundred times and yet I kept thinking, "what is happening here? Who are these people? Where is that iconic moment? Why did they leave that out in favor of this steaming pile of troll poop?" There were aspects of LOTR's trilogy that I disliked, but understood the changes. The Hobbit trilogy, however, was a disaster. Personally, I would rather watch the Rankin-Bass version.
