Getting the vegetable beds ready for planting, new sweetpea arch!

- In today's video, I finally cleared out the two no-dig raised beds from last year and the year before and filled up this year's new no-dig raised bed, ready for planting out!
I harvested some vegetables that I planted last autumn, assembled my second garden arch, which will hopefully be full of sweetpeas this year. I'm excited to have added some more structure and height to the garden and with that second arch, I'm hoping to make the kitchen garden area its own little space, full of vegetables, fruit and flowers.
What vegetables are you growing this year?
Hiya! My father-in-law told me that coffee grounds also are great for anti-snailing! Because they apparantly taste what they go over, the coffee grounds are bitter - worth a try! :)
Laughing from the start. You're such a joy ❤
Glad you enjoyed!
You could add a nice big pot at the end of your chunky rectangle planter with flowers or more vegetables would be pretty. Slice or chop your leeks and celery to freeze and have ready for your soup pot. The small leeks I cut into and freeze the white and green separate. Cooked in soups you would never know they had been frozen. Garden all refreshed and pretty. Love your arch.
Watching you and Catherine is really getting me motivated to tackle my massive jungle of a garden. We bought our house last year and we've never had a garden before so i'm very new and loving getting tips from you both and your communities. 😊
Only three of my Bruneras came back and I lost a rose bush it was called a JuliE Andrews. They do say rose bushes are considered a tender perennial up here in New England have tons of raking to do with all the trees we have here, I leave leaves for insects to live and hide in helps to feed birds and little critters. Getting all my supplies now and then do my planting when all the leaves are fully in. Thanks again for Sharing your world with us 💕💗😊
Put netting over the ventilation holes! Tape a patch of tights or similar over fully open ventilation holes. Trust me it works.
You and Catherine give me so many ideas for my garden. It’s the first time in my adult life, I’ve had a garden. ❤
That’s made my day! I love getting inspiration from watching others and I’m delighted we gave you some ideas! Enjoy your garden Ruth 😍
Wow I jelly look at all that celery, I never had much luck with it. Chop that celery and put in the freezer, pull out what you need for soup😊 Your garden is looking good. Have a good week.
Have a lovely week Catherine!
use your compost bags to lay at the back of your beds black side up then the bark no more weeds it's looking great 😊
Loved your video Karen❤❤❤, I'm planning on doing an arch too. Using gardening trellis mesh for sweet peas and morning glorys . I'm from the US and found your channel by way of dainty diaries ❤❤❤
I am waiting for another Chat with Catherine. 😁
I'm one of Catherine's Old Girls and I joined up with you when you and Catherine did your giggly gurt video.
One thought if you are behind why not ask Catherine to give you a hand and video that as your next giggly girt video.
I think it could be hysterical.
I think you need to put something on the cream coloured wall. Whatever it is it will look spectacular through the arch. Loving your chanel. Good night from Australia. ♥
I’m thinking on buying a small statue for my small garden just to “jush” up the area. 😊( jush= dress up)
Beautiful work, share celery with food pantry in your area
Amazing to me that you are already harvesting …. In Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 we have just started our planting season!!!!
I remember the long Ontario winters well!
Beans would love to climb the corn. Look into 3 sisters planting. They are traditionally grown together by indigenous Americans. Lovely video as always!🩵
This is GENIUS! I’d forgotten all about the 3 sisters planting and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Thank you!
You are not so much behind as I am😂 This week I mowed my small lawn for the first time this year. 🤭I only planted some plants a friend gave me and I didn't sow anything. But my garden doesn't look so bad. 😃 Tulips from last year and the year befor came again and lots of perennials are showing up. Though not one of the narzissie in my raised bed came up🤔 Too wet, too dark? I don't know. I like to watch your endeavors and your exitement 🙂 Looking forward to your next chat with Catherine. Good luck with all your plans! I will pull out some weeds now. 🤨😏
Catherine and I are trying to organise a date for the next chat!
I worked in the garden for hours. And now I´m watching you working. 😁 I planted almost all my seedlings out this week - so far they are still there. 🐌 But when I look at your lupins I think that mine will never ever flower. They are tiny. I don´t like selerie as well. Your sweet peas are looking great. I love watching how your garden evolve. My roses on my arch will meet this year. It took forever - I´m so excited. Hugs from Germany. 💛🐝💛
I bought my lupins a few weeks ago and they’re much bigger than ones I tried to grow from seed!
@@Lovelygirliebits Yes, I know you bought them. Maybe I should buy some also. 😃
Sigh I wished I lived next door to you. Would have asked for the Celery. Always an awesome video. Have a wonderful week 😊
I could feed the whole street with the amount of celery I have 😂
Hi KareN, Gardens lookin GooD😀 I used to have some of those furry pink tulips but they don’t come up anymore I don’t know maybe an animal dug them uP. 😄Anyways I’ve actually been busy in my own garden finally to watch more videos, but then that’s what the winter and rainy days are for.😊
If you put cardboard down before the mulch/wood chips it helps keep them at bay a bit longer.
Yes, I was going to suggest exactly the same, to put cardboard down, before putting bark down. I had quite a good layer of cardboard under the bark between my no dig raised beds, and the grass/weeds is not coming through at all 😉
I was also going to suggest this lol! It def works! I created a quarter moon flower bed around my mailbox this yr in March. I dug out all the grass, laid down cardboard minus labels, then laid down compost and mulch. The cardboard smothers the grass out, and as it breaks down, it amends the soil. Win win! I only have a sprig or two of grass that has popped up since then which is super easy to just pull out.
Looks great darling. Good job. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Thanks Maureen, have a lovely week!
For slugs and snails, I’m not sure if you call it something different there, but here in Australia we call it bicarbonate of soda. I use it in cooking and cleaning, but it also kills slugs. I put a border of it around my plants during the night when the slugs and snails are most active. If they cross the border it will kill them. The only problem with this method is that you need a lot of bicarb as it washes away and has to be topped up every day, but if they get it in on them they 100% don’t survive. It’s also not pretty to look at.
Oh I must research that more, thanks for the heads up!
Use coffee grounds around the garden. The acid in the coffee keep the slugs away.
Oh good to know! I must research that now 😍
@@Lovelygirliebits if you don't drink coffee your local coffee shop should be more than happy to give you some of there used grounds. 😊
Hi Karen, loving the Arches, they will look lovely when they are full of blooms. My hubby and I have tried metal arches (they rusted) we tried wood (they rotted) despite looking after them!! Think we may try good quality plastic next. Happy gardening🌻🌻🌻
Jane, I think I’ll be doing the same to be honest!!
Ive done sod all in the garden yet. Ive just rotated the bulbs pots out the front lest neighbours be talking.
Ive been too busy using my “future renew’ over the past 3 weeks or so !! 😂
Cant wait to see your video on your trip !
I’ve just started using the products and the textures are beautiful 😍😍😍
Hi lovely🌷🌷I’m waiting for my climbing roses to go up my arch too 👍🌸🌸
I can’t wait until we can be surrounded by roses!
Loving your inspiration
Me too, i love her work and i find it amazing how much is already blooming. Where i live it takes a little. Greetings and 💚
I'm loving the arches to your vegetable garden area ! Such a cute idea . I'm planting out veggie starts today in our garden 👩🌾.
Regarding the broccoli flowers, I wonder if you can save the seeds to plant again ? Happy Gardening 👩🌾
Happy planting!
I’d put cardboard over those weeds in the back first, before laying down bark
Definitely going to do that!
Karen, I hear you talk about your mom a bit. I would love to see her in your videos sometimes. You could do her makeup and she could help you with the garden, maybe. 😊
I used to share more family content online a few years ago, but unfortunately the internet is a different place now, so I keep them off my channels for protection. It’s the minority who have made it this way, but you might see her in the background of garden videos! She doesn’t like the camera 😂
I'm attempting to grow squash on arch this year, butternut, crown prince, sunbeam
Nothing like a freshly mulched bed, its so satisfying to look at! I'd be interested now to see how that Johns innes stuff works. I see it on the compost bags in woodies the whole time!
Happy Gardening!
Laura 💚🌱
It will be so pretty🌸
I’m so impatient 😂
Great job, my zinnia seeds are working hard with new sprouts coming up. So excited. Not much happening with the marigold seeds, but strawberries are filling up the barrel planter. We are getting into a warm trend this week, happy to have the sunshine.
I love your archway. You gave me a great idea. Karen your garden is coming out beautiful, keep up the great hard work you do!💐
Ah I’m so glad you enjoyed the video Esther 😍
That bright pink is a great colour on you. The garden is really starting to fill out. Looking forward to seeing how it looks in summer.
I do love a bit of brightness when it comes to my clothes!
I feel this spring is just weird! It's been so cold and windy here so we can't really plant much out before we near june I fear, which means a lot of my starts are pretty big and need potting on time and time again 😵 give warmer weather! Besides seedlings it's mostly weeding and "garden dreams" if I won the lottery 😂
Love your arches, can't wait to see how it'll come along over the summer :D
Potato leek soup……roast chicken……chicken pie……. I think we need a Cooking with Karen video 😁😁. Very excited to see the sweet pea arch come to life!!
I’ve done literally all of those things in the last two days 😂 but didn’t film it, my kitchen is tiny 😂
I was going to suggest that too - pole beans planted to climb the corn stalks and in between plant squash.
Karen you have a lovely sense of humour and always make me laugh, thank you! Happy gardening.
Totally going to be doing this!!
Our neighbour is letting use use his 4 garden boxes as he just lets it go to weed. I’m going to try this method too!
Your garden is looking great Karen x I am now panicking looking at your celery, I think I may have planted too many in my little bed. Well it's all a learning curve isn't it. Love the arch ways and there are so many different plants that will climb.
Thanks for sharing your lovely garden with us all..xxx
When I planted them last autumn, they were tiny and I should have harvested them more frequently, but we live and learn 😂
Love this! You made another garden "room" ! I agree, this year has flown by so far. You're not behind, I'm still starting seeds : ) I started cosmos and marigolds this week. They just jumped in my cart at the store so I had to start them ; ) It all looks lovely! Those celery, girl you know how to grow it!
Isn’t that funny how the seeds jump into your cart! The same thing happened to me the other day 😂😂😂 happy sowing!
Love arches, I have put rope lights on mine. I've got climbing foliage up one side and I'm hoping to grow my peas up the other.
My head felt fuzzy this morning so I knew I needed to get in the garden and do some weeding. Anyway 2 hours later I felt better lol xx
I’m the same, when I’m feeling off, I know I’ll feel better after some time in the garden 😍
Hi from Seattle! I loved this video. What an amazing veggie grower you are. Couldn't agree more about the celery😅 I'm heading out to my garden to continue the cleanup from a complete roofing replacement. The workers did their best to minimize the damage but we have such a small lot, it was hard to stay out of the garden beds with ladders and boots.😫
Oh enjoy being back out in the garden Deborah!
Hi my lovely your veg looks yummy wish I was closer as I love celery with cream cheese. Please pull the ivy which is coming through the fence as it takes over. I have that problem with my non gardener next door and my neighbour the other side has 3 ft high grass and dandelions a nightmare as my grass is full of weeds
Yeah that’s on this week’s list 😭
15.22 your little water feature just behind you. This is what I need for my little solar fountain. May I ask where you got it. Catherine has one also!
It’s a little birdbath! Catherine got hers in the arboretum garden centre last year and I got mine in the Kilkenny salvage yard 😍 I don’t think it would be deep enough for my own solar fountain, but it might work with yours x
I feel so behind this year in my garden also! I started so early, but then the weather keeps deterring me from getting out there. It’s supposed to turn nice again next week so crossing fingers, I can get a lot more done. 🌸🌸🌸
Fingers crossed you can get cracking properly soon!!
@@Lovelygirliebits Thank you!! I got some done yesterday between the light rains. yay!
Potato and leeks soup, yum! I make mine with sweet potato, BTW did you ever tried to grow sweet potato? Thanks for a lovely video, you always inspire me to improve my garden and to buy more seeds. 😁
The plant you don't know the name of is Osteospermum aka African Daisy. They're not frost hardy so treat them like Pelargoniums over winter etc... bring them in to avoid losing them.
I’ll try to remember that, thank you!
Um yes, the weeks are flying by so fast, and I feel behind as well. Just put some dahlias and ranunculus in the ground and sowed some calendula seeds. I still have more dahlias and zinnias to plant as well. So much to do… 😩
I’ve so many seeds to sow too 😭😭
Oh, your garden looks so great already. My seeds (purely veggies as I don't have space for big flowers in my balcony garden) are so slow this year, I can't even... 😂😅 I keep thinking sth must be wrong, but the reality is it's probably just the weather.
Edible flowers are also an option
@@Karincl7 True that. I'll have to look into it. Thanks!
Just discovered your channel and it’s great. I have a gardening and home style channel but only have 3 subscribers and 2 of those are my daughter and sister lol, how do you get your channel”out there”, do you need to pay? I’m very new and naive about all this. Keep up the good work xx
Chop up extra celery & gfreeze it.
Sure “slug juice” is great for your skin. Or is that ‘snail juice’ 😅😅
😂😂😂
Put sand around the plant they don’t like it.
Nice Outfit, i got the Same on Friday🙋♀️🌸🌿🪴
I’m all about comfort in the garden 😂
Me too, Karen, i love your yellow garden shoes. I got blue and light pink ones. I ment your outfit on the beginning of the Video. Greetings 🙋♀️🌸🌿🪴
