Getting the vegetable beds ready for planting, new sweetpea arch!

  • In today's video, I finally cleared out the two no-dig raised beds from last year and the year before and filled up this year's new no-dig raised bed, ready for planting out!
    I harvested some vegetables that I planted last autumn, assembled my second garden arch, which will hopefully be full of sweetpeas this year. I'm excited to have added some more structure and height to the garden and with that second arch, I'm hoping to make the kitchen garden area its own little space, full of vegetables, fruit and flowers.
    What vegetables are you growing this year?

    Hiya! My father-in-law told me that coffee grounds also are great for anti-snailing! Because they apparantly taste what they go over, the coffee grounds are bitter - worth a try! :)

    You could add a nice big pot at the end of your chunky rectangle planter with flowers or more vegetables would be pretty. Slice or chop your leeks and celery to freeze and have ready for your soup pot. The small leeks I cut into and freeze the white and green separate. Cooked in soups you would never know they had been frozen. Garden all refreshed and pretty. Love your arch.

    Only three of my Bruneras came back and I lost a rose bush it was called a JuliE Andrews. They do say rose bushes are considered a tender perennial up here in New England have tons of raking to do with all the trees we have here, I leave leaves for insects to live and hide in helps to feed birds and little critters. Getting all my supplies now and then do my planting when all the leaves are fully in. Thanks again for Sharing your world with us 💕💗😊

    You are not so much behind as I am😂 This week I mowed my small lawn for the first time this year. 🤭I only planted some plants a friend gave me and I didn't sow anything. But my garden doesn't look so bad. 😃 Tulips from last year and the year befor came again and lots of perennials are showing up. Though not one of the narzissie in my raised bed came up🤔 Too wet, too dark? I don't know. I like to watch your endeavors and your exitement 🙂 Looking forward to your next chat with Catherine. And now I´m watching you working. 😁 I planted almost all my seedlings out this week - so far they are still there. 🐌 But when I look at your lupins I think that mine will never ever flower. They are tiny. I don´t like selerie as well. Your sweet peas are looking great. I love watching how your garden evolve. My roses on my arch will meet this year. It took forever - I´m so excited. If you put cardboard down before the mulch/wood chips it helps keep them at bay a bit longer.

    • @vilmamizeraite1433
      @vilmamizeraite1433 Год назад +1

      Yes, I was going to suggest exactly the same, to put cardboard down, before putting bark down. I had quite a good layer of cardboard under the bark between my no dig raised beds, and the grass/weeds is not coming through at all 😉

    • @loricawley54
      @loricawley54 Год назад +1

      I was also going to suggest this lol! It def works! I created a quarter moon flower bed around my mailbox this yr in March. I dug out all the grass, laid down cardboard minus labels, then laid down compost and mulch. The cardboard smothers the grass out, and as it breaks down, it amends the soil. Win win! I only have a sprig or two of grass that has popped up since then which is super easy to just pull out.

    For slugs and snails, I’m not sure if you call it something different there, but here in Australia we call it bicarbonate of soda. I use it in cooking and cleaning, but it also kills slugs. I put a border of it around my plants during the night when the slugs and snails are most active. If they cross the border it will kill them. The only problem with this method is that you need a lot of bicarb as it washes away and has to be topped up every day, but if they get it in on them they 100% don’t survive. It’s also not pretty to look at.
