    About Pete And His Bus: Pete is a normal (ish) guy who has a big passion for old vehicles and particularly old buses. He is NOT a trained mechanic nor is he professional restorer. He enjoys converting vehicles but he can not promise that what he is doing is going to work on your vehicle. Nor can he promise that you won’t harm yourself if you were you to attempt the things he does. He recommends that you are safe and responsible with machinery and equipment even if you’ve seen him messing about with it. A workshop and it’s content can be a dangerous place. If you are in doubt about your own vehicle, contact a professional for advice.

    I used to love driving those RM's and RML's around London on a sunny day, the natural air-conditioning in the cab, front two windows wide open, left window fully slid back and the door slid forward. There was almost always a kid sitting in the front seat watching me drive. Going up hills laden or not would need to use the pre-select gears as auto was as good as useless. This is a special kind of bus.

    • @PeteAndHisBus
      @PeteAndHisBus  3 года назад +1

      Yes, you know! That auto mode is useless. I drive em with pre-select gears only. Thanks for watching.

      @@PeteAndHisBus Really ?...I remember they first started taking them out of service sometime between 2005 - 2007.
      I live in Liverpool now but was originally from Stoke Newington, East London so I remember these great old route master busses very well back in the early 1980's, especially the 149 !... Up here in Merseyside I've seen a couple of London route masters going round occasionally being used for weddings ! They are both on a "D reg" so I think they are from 1966-67 ish.
      Have fun playing with your BIG toys and keep the great videos coming ! 👍👍👍

    Love RM's the RML was an after thought in 1961 when 30' buses were permitted to run. It's easy to lengthen since there are sub frames. RML 2730 was new in '67 with at least one body swap, which happened at overhaul. This was heavily refurbished in the 90's. Would typically love to see it in original condition.

    • @PeteAndHisBus
      @PeteAndHisBus  3 года назад

      Yes I understand. But I assure you that my conversion is going to be done in a very sensitive way. It’ll always be able to be turned back to originality. And this way we can go out and use her rather then her sitting in a shed collecting dust.

    I suspect I have ridden this, as a young lad if it was one of the units running the old London Country between Gravesend and Bromley wending its way round towards Heathrow and I need to check my RM spotters book as I often rode the RML's from Bromley North to Redhill after they retired the poor old RT's that wheezed up Biggin Hill and thundered down with looks of grim panic on the drivers face as he fought that vicious hill down towards Westerham in the days before the M25 and many a happy summer saturday spent walking the old line there for souvenirs.
    I spent long years trying to get all the RM's and I did it back in 78 having to use my BR PT ticket to get to the north of London garages. I was curious too of a set of closed rear door RM's that operated out of a small place in Penge literally just by Penge West station, in red but there was never an official LT garage there so I never got to ride those ones. Must say thanks to the ol' Red Bus Rover that was just an amazing deal for us kids :D Back in the 70's, in Gravesend someone owned an RT and every Xmas and New Years it would drive about, music blaring with revellers getting very drunk on it and the lightbulbs changed for coloured ones to give it a disco air, maybe you have heard of that one?

      It is a fair question, I had commercial trade plates so it was all legal.

    I'm guessing there's a lot you didn't show. You don't just run a diesel engine that has sat for years. The fuel alone needs removing flushing and refilling because of diesel bug, water from condensation etc.

    • @PeteAndHisBus
      @PeteAndHisBus  3 года назад

      There are some bits I didn’t show but generally it just fired up. Apparently the previous owner did fire it up every now and then. I know it hadn’t actually been started for about 2 years. Thanks for watching

    • @PeteAndHisBus
      @PeteAndHisBus  3 года назад +3

      Hi bud, thanks so much for your kind words, glad you're enjoying it! Now, this is a huge grey area because the DVLA make it very confusing and everybody seems to interpret the rules differently. This is how I have it: I insure it as a catering unit for around £1000 per year and I have an independent public liability policy at around £150 per year. This allows me to drive the bus and operate as a bar. Because I don't trade as a business on the move, I am able to have it MOT exempt, tax free and am allowed to drive it on standard car license. It's MOT class 5, and I can only carry up to 8 people at a time including myself but no stock! It's not allowed to carry a load. I've only ever been pulled over once and the officers actually asked ME how it worked cos they had no idea. haha! Hope that answers your question. Thanks for your support! The facebook page has lots on it too if you fancy more bus stuff, PAHB style obvs! ;) facebook.com/peteandhisbus

      Yes they can. They have to be classed as historic and I think for insurance reasons the driver has to be over 30.

    Brakes? You don't need brakes! If the bus is down the road from you, you need to bring it UP the road, and if you take it slow you dont need brakes going uphill, just let go of the gas.
