    The fact that you responded to so many answers blows my mind. Thanks so much for helping the powerlifting community as a whole, man. Great video and currently the best available resource for a simple tapering strategy. Converted this to RPE and implented some additional singles for myself, hoping for the best. Thanks again!

    I'm so glad I found this channel. I made a lot of mistakes going into my first meet. I went 5 for 9 and missed some lifts that I've hit in my training. I think a lot of it had to do with not peaking properly and not choosing the right opening lifts. Thank you making a video about this.

    Garrett, I've been trying to test my 1rm each round of the cube method you recommended, for the last 3 cycles and it was only the first go around i made a 1rm pr. Im starting to feel that that's too often for an intermediate like me. I got a 480 deadlift but could not do anything higher. The last go around i substituted your 2 week peaking for weeks 8,9 which was cool bc i PR on my 3rm, but that was it. i feel i was stronger in the 90-95% but too sore (slight strain) to max despite taking longer between sessions (4 days)... i believe this needs to be emphasized for beginners and intermediates... thanks for your videos!

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  10 лет назад

      Yes, you know yourself better than anyone else and if you are not recovered then setting PRs is probably out of the question. Keep on it and find the right balance for you.

    I really enjoyed your video and I may try it later on for a powerlifting meet! I had some issues with the percentages because if you only bench 300. doing 4x3 at 270lbs is almost impossible. I'm not sure if you specified this in your video but if you have lower numbers then your 90% will be too heavy. A 90% lift is easier for someone who deadlifts 800 as opposed to someone who deadlifts 300. Just a thought!

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  9 лет назад

      Thanks for the feedback, I am actually in the same boat as I am way better at singles then I am at reps. You might surprise yourself though if you train a lot of triples, 270x3 might happen if you are used to sets of 3-5. In any case RPE may be a better way to set this up and I will look into putting out that modification.
      Blessings

    • @RebirthfitnessOrg
      @RebirthfitnessOrg 9 лет назад

      I'm sure it would work more moderate to advanced lifters due to what 90% is for you and myself. (I consider myself moderate). I don't see how it would work for beginners though. Thanks for the response!

    I know im late lol. But i have one question.
    You said you would do sets of 3. Why wouldnt you do any singles before a meet since you litteraly will just do singles in the compettion later. Dont you think its more effective to singles than tripples to prepare your nervous system for EXACTLY what’s about to happen??

      Garrett Blevins Thanks Garrett :).
      So I want to use this strategy to peak for my first powerlifting meet, but I'm concerned about only benching 2x (last session doesn't really count since it's only 50%) in 3 weeks. Historically, I did better benching with 2-3x per week and I know you bench 3x a week as well.
      Did you not see any adverse effects of reducing your frequency so much?

    Hi Garrett, great vid. Hoping u would be kind enough to answer a quick quesion. Say I had a 4 to 5 week training block/cycle. Could I add in the 2 week protocol you suggest to the end of that block and work up to a 3 rep max, then deload and repeat cycle, and so on and so on? Thus can it be used as part of an ongoing program?

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  9 лет назад

      scotpak100 It can. However, remember that doing a heavy single is a skill of its own and you will want to make sure you can make the triples transfer into a single well. No one like to be great at triples and only be able to do a little more for a max single.

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  10 лет назад

      I am not a big fan of the "off season" as I have been able to run the kingpin RTS split back to back. Really I do not understand the need for an off season, sorry to not be more helpful on this issue. I think the undulating characteristics of my training syle allows me to recover enough and still build a base without one.

  • @CleavonLampe
    @CleavonLampe 10 лет назад

    Hi, Garrett!
    I've been checking out your videos where you were on the cube predator for bench. Bench is really a weak lift for me so I wanted to give the cube predator method a go, with only a max bench of 225. I've only been lifting for a year now. The program just really appeals to me even though it looks brutal. I do realizee that what I'm about to mention isn't anything I should be worrying about not having much experience or a big bench. But I believe having a 435 deadlift and a 360 squat doesn't really go with only a 225 MAX bench.
    Now, I've wanted to hear from you what you would think I should do for my lower days. I want to get work done in the gym 4x a week as I'm currently on Candito's upper/lower linear program.
    So, does it sound weird to run 5/3/1 for squats and deads, and replace bench with the cube predator program? It would look like this: Mon:5/3/1Deads, Tue:Light Bench, Thurs:5/3/1Squats, Fri:Heavy Bench.
    Do you think having a 4 week cycle (5/3/1) overrunning a 6 week cycle (cube predator) is a problem? You'd be maxing on bench in a week where you're training in different percentages etc for your other lifts.
    I truly appreciate any thought you give into this or whatever else you would recommend me to do being pretty new to lifting. (I've been on 5x5 and now candito's program for quite a while).

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  10 лет назад +1

      I really like what you have here and think that it could produce results. However, if you are making progress now on Canditos plan then do not stop. If you have stalled (i.e. getting less than 5 lbs on each lift every 12 weeks) then give what you have here a shot. I would run 2 cycles of the cube predator next to 3 cycles of 531, that would have both end at 12 weeks. Good luck.
      Blessings

    Hey garrett, love the content! I was wondering if you used your 95% as your training max or your actual 1rm for peaking? Also, besides the heavy days during the peaking phase, how did your volume look like for the big 3 during the rest of the week? Did you continue to keep the intensity high or just saved that for your heavy days, while hitting the minimum during the other days? (85%) thanks!

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  8 лет назад +1

      +vo Pham For this I think I was starting to go be feel and shoot for a PR on the triples of the last week. I then used that as my opener and used the estimated 1RM from that week as the target for the third in competition - this is when I started branching into RPE based training and since then it has helped me a ton.

    Very informative video, thank you very much for putting this content out there.
    Question: Do you think this could work for a push/pull-only lifter? A charity meet popped up in 3 weeks that I would really like to compete in, and I'm a push/pull lifter. Do you think the same effect can be achieved without the squats, or would that completely throw off the balance of the program because the overall fatigure levels change pretty drastically?

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  9 лет назад

      Zach Adams I would add in a little more deadlifting to make up for the loss of the squat but the principles of peaking are the same whether it is full power or push pull. GL.

    • @zachadams8126
      @zachadams8126 9 лет назад

      Thanks for the quick response Garrett! I'm curious - how many tims per week do you usually train each of the main powerlifts? I've been benching 3x/week for a long time using sheiko, and DLing 2x/week for the past 4 months. Was discussing this with a friend and he thought cutting down the frequency of each lift to just once a week from that during those 2 weeks might potentially cause problems. Any thoughts?

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  9 лет назад

      Zach Adams Cutting the frequency to 1x from a high frequency like you are using could cause some issues. What I would do is keep the volume the same while doing the lifts more frequently (go hard on bench 2x and do the squatting and dling 2x per week at least). You might just do half the sets one day and then the other half another - and you could have the double the benching sets but do them over 2 days with one day using the %s in the video and the other day using about 10% less.
      GL.

    Hi Garret just subbed. Came to this channel looking for info about peaking. This looks good and I'm 6 weeks out so will try. Do you still will use it as the video or made some minor changes? it's ok to do a heavy dead 2x3 on friday just 1 week out? or it's better to do monday dead, wednesday bench and friday squat for the last 3-4 weeks... Thank you!

    I'm pretty sure this video had a huge impact on my first meet this week! Thank you!
    I do have a question now though, I have a meet in 5 weeks, and then another meet 2 weeks after, how should I attempt to be at my best for both meets, baring in mind the second meet is more important (national).
    Thanks again for this video!

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  9 лет назад

      Rory Stuart My advice is to use the first meet as a test to see where your openers should be (finish your thirds in that meet at around 95% of your last meet - don't go for PRs). There is no way to make huge improvements in 2 weeks and if you go all out at the first one your strength will suffer at the second and since the second is nationals go for PRs there. GL.

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  8 лет назад

      You should match your peak to you current training - since I made this video I realized that doing singles is really one of the most important things a peak should have so I really need to update this video.

    • @Justin_Choy
      @Justin_Choy 8 лет назад

      +Garrett Blevins so what would the volume and intensity look like as you approach the meet. Would you stick to the conjugate split of Max Effort and Dynamic Effort? If so what would be a rough range for optimal intensity and volume

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  8 лет назад

      SuperJc507 The max effort should become sub-maximal singles (RPE 8-9) and I would continue the dynamic work but lower the number of sets slightly and increase the weight used some.

  • @XenoPhanatiK
    @XenoPhanatiK 9 лет назад

    Hey Garret, I have a quick question. After my current cycle of the 6 week candito program, I will be 3 weeks out from my next meet. I plan to run your peaking program when I am 2 weeks out. What do you suggest I do during the 1 week gap between the 2 programs? (This 1 week gap will be the 6th week of the candito program, I don't intend to test maxes or start a new cycle) Thanks for the information!

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  9 лет назад +1

      Xeno PhanatiK To be clear the peaking cycle is a week of 4x3, then a week of 2x3 and then a deload into the meet so that is 3 weeks. However if you already knew that and were not counting the meet of the week then in-between Canditos and the peaking do a 3x5 or 4x5 week with a focus on the competition movements like in my peaking plan with some drop sets added in. Start getting specific but don't beat yourself up too bad because you will need the energy for the peaking cycle.
      Blessings

    • @XenoPhanatiK
      @XenoPhanatiK 9 лет назад +1

      Garrett Blevins Thanks for your guidance, I will probably just work up to 75-80% on the 3x5 gap week before jumping into your peaking cycle.

    • @XenoPhanatiK
      @XenoPhanatiK 9 лет назад

      Garrett Blevins Sorry to revisit this topic again, but I have another inquiry. If I opted to taper on meet week instead of running the 50% days how should I set it up?
      Your friend Jin who I train with recommends 3x3 for squats and bench, and 1x3 for deadlifts at around 75-80% on Monday of meet week. Then working up to your opener for each lift on Wednesday. What are your thoughts on this?
      Thanks.

    • @gjmjblevins
      @gjmjblevins  9 лет назад

      Xeno PhanatiK I would do singles at no more than 75% if I was going the 3x1 route.

      Garrett Blevins Ok so deadlifts should be changed to 3x1 at 75% but everything else is solid?
